Subject: [Eu-consenting_consortium] IMPORTANT Consortium Call
[Time-sensitive]
Dear all,
Hope all is well, and you are enjoying your summer.
As you all know, our proposal writing has reached a critical and exciting
phase, i.e. choosing the specific use-cases that we like to work on. We want
to consider the inputs from all partners, especially from more technical
partners such as ERCIM, Inria, UPM, TCD, Signatu, etc to be able to make the
best decision regarding the use-cases that we like to work on and regarding
the overall framing/narrative of the project. Therefore, we want to call for
a "special" consortium call in which most of the partners (in particular the
more technical ones) are available. However, many of you are enjoying your
vacations, and it seems that it's not easy to coordinate this (we understand
it). But this is a crucial step in our joint proposal writing, and without
making a clear and mutual decision regarding the use-cases, we cannot move
on much. Therefore, I would like to kindly request you to enter your
availability to the following Termino calendar.
https://www.termino.gv.at/meet/en/p/03e01ca8cf4bc85f46c20dcd033c0255-82564
We already have your vacation plan, but since this is a special case, we
thought some of you might be kind enough to lend one/two hour/s of your time
to the consortium even while enjoying your vacation.
I'd be most thankful if you kindly add as many time-slots as possible.
Thank you so much for your understanding,
Looking forward to it,
Cheers,
Soheil

> A few comments:

> #1
> I think the « via web browser » is key to the consent topic and should be retained as a use-case.
> And it applies both to traditional laptop browsers and also smartphone browsers, the case of smartphones bringing additional questions.
>
> #2
> The involvement of Signatu is nice, since they provide the CMP view of the web browser consent and its evolution for the coming years where many key changes will undoubtedly happen.
> That’s very complementary to our view as researchers on the topic.
> I’d like to see as use-case the new trends of the IAB/CMP/Google/etc. for collecting and managing user consent.
> From what I understood, I have the feeling there’s a general move to connected environments as replacement of cookies, and I fear users may have less control of what will happen.
>
> #3
> In the smartphone environment, there are clear incentives to have users switch to dedicated apps instead of accessing web services through traditional web browsers.
> It’s beneficial for the companies from a user engagement viewpoint but also because it enables them to collect additional data not accessible through the browser controlled environment.
> Hence smartphone apps also raise questions in terms of user information and consent, and I think it should be an additional separate use-case.
>
> #4
> Regarding iot, it’s unavoidable to split into sub-domains, as suggested above in your email, because the situation is pretty different.
> In a smart home, a user has some control over what is installed, but is left totally powerless in terms of information and consentl, especially as a single smart device can usually be controlled in many different ways…
> The situation is pretty different with smart cars where you basically indirectly use what has been included by private companies, and the same is true for smart cities with a mixture of private and public equipments.
> To summarize, I suggest adding a « smart homes » use-case, and keeping iot use-cases separate as much as possible.
>
> #5
> Each of these use-cases will cast some light on how consent is currently managed and issues they raise, in a « state-of-the-art » manner.
> As I understand the project proposal from the EU Consenting_WP_Tasks_Partners_V4 document, I have the feeling the current WP/Task description puts more importance on the development/deployment of a new consent scheme, than on what we can learn from existing practices.
> I’m not sure this clean slate approach is the goal and would be well appreciated by reviewers.

Dear all
As discussed at our yesterday's meeting, we plan to apply under the EU call
Scalable privacy-preserving technologies for cross-border federated
computation in Europe involving personal data
<https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/oppor
tunities/topic-details/horizon-cl3-2021-cs-01-04>
Deadline 21 October 2021.
For this project, we would need to add further industry partners and use
case partners.
In case you can recommend a possible partner/network, please add to the list
in our shared folder <https://humans.ocloud.de/index.php/s/wKRSJABHnx9NzQf>
https://humans.ocloud.de/index.php/s/wKRSJABHnx9NzQf (PW as usual), or
send your suggestion directly to Soheil.
We will jointly evaluate the partners list at the next meeting to decide on
who to contact.
Therefore, please do not actively contact a possible partner so far.
Many thanks and best regards
Petra
