-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [AISWorld] Call for Papers: "Theories in IS Research" mini-track at HICSS 47 (2014) Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2013 15:23:03 +1000 From: Dirk Hovorka dhovorka@bond.edu.au To: AISWorld@lists.aisnet.org
Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to submit a paper to the 47th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS)mini-track ?Theories in IS Research?. We present the CfP of the mini-track below as well as the call for papers for HICSS 47. Please circulate this information to interested researchers.
*HICSS 47 (2014) Mini-track: Theories in IS Research*
*(Organizational Systems and Technology track)*
The ?Theoretical Approaches to IS Research? mini-track has a long history at HICSS and succeeded in elevating a broad, community-wide interest in IS theories. Recent editorial statements, including for MIS Quarterly (May 2007), have highlighted the need for focused attention on IS theories, analysis of theories, and the assumptions underlying theories. For HICSS 47 (2014), the ?Theories in IS Research? mini-track has been refocused, restructured, and re-titled to broaden its appeal and mission and to continue to address these goals.
Despite the ubiquity of ?theory? in IS research, there remain numerous lines of inquiry regarding IS theory and how to better promote development, understanding, and use of theory. Notably there are few frameworks and ontologies that organize theories used in IS research or that relate IS theories to theories in other disciplines. There is also a need to develop a more coherent understanding of the philosophical commitments represented in the development and use of theories. We also seek essays and thought-papers which promote dialog to deepen foundational thinking and philosophical understanding of IS theory, and the differing and competing roles of theory in research.
Toward these ends, topics of interest in this mini-track include:
* Research on ontologies, taxonomies, frameworks, and categorizations of constructs and variables used in IS theories; * The theoretical ties between IS research and research in other disciplines; * Trends in IS theories; * Integration or simplification of related IS theories; * Evaluation of the tools used in theory meta-analysis; * Discussion of the different roles of theories used to explain, to predict and to understand; * Exploration of the dependencies of constructs and variables and the boundaries of IS theories * Meta studies of the IS field, based on theories used, and meta studies of theories used, in IS research * Papers that develop new theories applicable to IS research * Papers that extend existing theories within the context of IS research.
New this year, we hope to promote new points of view by inviting a guest speaker to address a pioneering topic. We also hope to host a social event among those interested in IS theory.
This mini-track also has an associated ISWorld website devoted to theories used in IS research (http://istheory.byu.edu/wiki/Main_Page) ?which won the 2005 AISWorldNet Challenge Award for the best website based on AISWorldNet user voting. We intend to uphold this high standard and advance the website further by increasing the synergy between mini-track outcomes and website content.

*About HICSS:*
Now in its 47th year, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) is one of the longest-standing continuously running scientific conferences. This conference brings together researchers in an aloha-friendly atmosphere conducive to free exchange of scientific ideas. Unique characteristics of the conference include:
* A matrix structure of tracks and themes that enables research on a rich mixture of computer-based applications and technologies. * Three days of research paper presentations and discussions in a workshop setting that promotes interaction leading to additional research. * A full day of Symposia, Workshops, and Tutorials. See Program Components for additional detail. * A truly international experience with participants usually from over 40 countries, (approximately 50% non-US). * Papers published in the Proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press and carried in the IEEE digital library Xplore. Access to HICSS papers is in the top 2% of IEEE Conferences. * Paper presentations and discussions which frequently lead to revised and extended papers that are published in journals, books, and special issues. * A keynote address and distinguished lecture which explore particularly relevant topics and concepts. * Best Paper Awards in each track which recognize superior research performance.
HICSS is a highly ranked IS conference in terms of citations as recorded by Google Scholar. The Australian Government's Excellence in Research project (ERA) has given HICSS an "A" rating, one of 32 Information Systems conferences so honored out of 241 (46-B and 146-C ratings). Data supplied by the Australian Research Council, December 2009 can be viewed at http://lamp.infosys.deakin.edu.au/era/?page=cfordet&selfor=0806
*HICSS-47 CALL FOR PAPERS** * Hilton Waikoloa, Big Island January 6-9, 2014 (Monday-Thursday)
HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Accepted papers may be theoretical, conceptual, tutorial or descriptive in nature. Those selected for presentation will be included in the Conference Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society and maintained in the IEEE Digital Library.
*How to Submit a Paper*
Follow Author Instructions to be posted by February 1, 2013 on the conference web site. http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_47/apahome47.htm
? HICSS papers must contain original material. They may not have been previously published, nor currently submitted elsewhere. All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review process; so initial submission must be without author names. ? Abstracts are optional, but strongly recommended. You may contact the Mini-track Chair(s) for guidance or verification of content. ? Submit a paper to only one Mini-track. If a paper is submitted to more than one mini-track, then either paper may be rejected by either mini-track without consultation with author or other chairs. If you are not sure of the appropriate Mini-track, submit an abstract to the Track Chair(s) for determination, and/or seek informal opinion(s) of Min-itrack Chair(s) before submitting. ? see names and contact information below. ? Do not author or co-author more than 5 papers. This means that an individual may be listed as author or co-author on no more than 5submitted papers. Track Chairs must approve any names added after submission or acceptance on August 15.
*Important 2013 Deadlines for Authors * June 15 Submit full manuscripts for review as instructed. The review is double-blind; therefore, this initial submission must be without author names.
Aug 15 Review System emails. Acceptance Notices to authors. It is very important that at least one author of each accepted paper attend the conference. Therefore, all travel guarantees ? including visa or your organization?s fiscal funding procedures ? should begin immediately. Make sure your server accepts the review system address
