Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit a paper to the 47th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) mini-track  “
Theories in IS Research”. We present the CfP of the mini-track below as well as the call for papers for HICSS 47. Please circulate this information to interested researchers.

HICSS 47 (2014) Mini-track:  Theories in IS Research

(Organizational Systems and Technology track)

The “Theoretical Approaches to IS Research” mini-track has a long history at HICSS and succeeded in elevating a broad, community-wide interest in IS theories. Recent editorial statements, including for MIS Quarterly (May 2007), have highlighted the need for focused attention on IS theories, analysis of theories, and the assumptions underlying theories.  For HICSS 47 (2014), the “Theories in IS Research” mini-track has been refocused, restructured, and re-titled to broaden its appeal and mission and to continue to address these goals.

Despite the ubiquity of “theory” in IS research, there remain numerous lines of inquiry regarding IS theory and how to better promote development, understanding, and use of theory.  Notably there are few frameworks and ontologies that organize theories used in IS research or that relate IS theories to theories in other disciplines. There is also a need to develop a more coherent understanding of the philosophical commitments represented in the development and use of theories. We also seek essays and thought-papers which promote  dialog to deepen foundational thinking and philosophical understanding of IS theory, and the differing and competing roles of theory in research.

Toward these ends, topics of interest in this mini-track include:

New this year, we hope to promote new points of view by inviting a guest speaker to address a pioneering topic. We also hope to host a social event among those interested in IS theory.

This mini-track also has an associated ISWorld website devoted to theories used in IS research (http://istheory.byu.edu/wiki/Main_Page) —which won the 2005 AISWorldNet Challenge Award for the best website based on AISWorldNet user voting.  We intend to uphold this high standard and advance the website further by increasing the synergy between mini-track outcomes and website content.

About HICSS:

Now in its 47th year, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) is one of the longest-standing continuously running scientific conferences. This conference brings together researchers in an aloha-friendly atmosphere conducive to free exchange of scientific ideas. Unique characteristics of the conference include:

HICSS is a highly ranked IS conference in terms of citations as recorded by Google Scholar. The Australian Government's Excellence in Research project (ERA) has given HICSS an "A" rating, one of 32 Information Systems conferences so honored out of 241 (46-B and 146-C ratings). Data supplied by the Australian Research Council, December 2009 can be viewed at

HICSS-47 CALL FOR PAPERS

Hilton Waikoloa, Big Island
January 6-9, 2014 (Monday-Thursday)

HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Accepted papers may be theoretical,
conceptual, tutorial or descriptive in nature. Those selected for presentation will be included in the Conference Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society and maintained in the IEEE Digital
Library.

How to Submit a Paper

Follow Author Instructions to be posted by February 1, 2013 on the conference web site.

submission must be without author names.
• Abstracts are optional, but strongly recommended. You may contact the Mini-track Chair(s) for guidance or verification of content.
• Submit a paper to only one Mini-track.  If a paper is submitted to more than one mini-track, then either paper may be rejected by either mini-track without consultation with author or other chairs. If you are
not sure of the appropriate Mini-track, submit an abstract to the Track Chair(s) for determination, and/or seek informal opinion(s) of Min-itrack Chair(s) before submitting. – see names and contact
information below.
• Do not author or co-author more than 5 papers.  This means that an individual may be listed as author or co-author on no more than 5submitted papers.  Track Chairs must approve any names added after
submission or acceptance on August 15.
