:
: Call for Papers for the track:
:
: The Economics of Information Systems
:
: Paper submission deadline: November 15, 1999
:
: Objectives
:
: Ever since the beginning of research into information systems, economics
: has been recognised as one of the underlying disciplines. Economics
: theory has made many contributions to the understanding of information
: systems. Some examples include theories of information value (decision
: theory, team theory, and game theory all provide concepts), which help
: to understand the implementation and use of information systems.
: Economic theory also gives rise to empirical and normative questions
: concerning information systems; how much is invested in information
: systems, how much should be invested, do the investments pay off? This
: last question has given rise in recent years to one of the most hotly
: debated issues in information systems, namely the productivity paradox.
: Presumably, organisations invest in information systems in order to
: improve their economies; why, then, is it so difficult to show the
: economic benefits arising from them?
:
: At a managerial level, the widespread use of information systems has
: given rise to many interesting questions concerning the prudent
: management of such systems in addition to those of economic value.
: Problems of optimal configuration, and metrics for productivity,
: efficiency and effectiveness of hardware, software, and personnel all
: require attention.
:
: There are also pressing problems at the managerial level - such as the
: year 2000 and the changeover
: to the common European currency - which will have considerable economic
: effects.
:
: The objective of this track is to present new research results and
: theories pertaining to all the economic aspects of information systems.
:
: Track Theme and Suggested Topics
:
: The main focus of this track will be measurement; how does one measure
: the multifarious economic dimensions of information systems. This
: applies at all levels from the single system, through the organisational
: to the national level. In particular, new ideas concerning measurement
: will be most welcome.
:
: Issues of interest include, but are not restricted to:
:
: * Productivity of information systems and the productivity paradox
:
: * Macroeconomic contribution of information systems and international
: comparisons
:
: * Information system management metrics
:
: * Value of information and information systems
:
: * Economic management of information system resources - hardware,
: software, infrastructure, personnel
:
: * Economics of outsourcing
:
: * Technology dissemination and adoption
:
: * Economics of IT industries
:
: * Economics of the Internet, Intranets and Electronic Commerce
:
: * Economics of current IS problems: the year 2000, effects of the
: changeover to EMU for European and other organisations, economics of
: innovative applications
:
: Programme Committee
:
: * Phillip Ein-Dor, Tel-Aviv University, Israel (Chair)
: * Niv Ahituv, Tel-Aviv University, Israel
: * Paul Alpar, Philipps University, Marburg, Germany
: * Yannis Bakos, New York University, USA

:
: IMPORTANT DATES:
:
: Paper submission deadline: November 15, 1999
: Acceptance decisions: January 30, 2000

: > OBJECTIVES
: > ==========
: > The field of Higher Education is currently undergoing dramatic structural
: > changes, mostly driven by Information & Communication Technologies
: > (IC-Technologies), which are penetrating all kinds of learning and
: > teaching processes and additionally are altering and enhancing knowledge
: > generation, acquisition, aggregation and distribution / dissemination.
: > These changes are occurring on a global level and are likely to accelerate
: > over the next few years at high speed.
: >
: > Modern IC-Technology supplies us with the resources to design new or
: > reengineer existing systems and organisations for Higher Education, which
: > can generate and provide very flexible products, services and combinations
: > of products/services for a vast majority of individual education needs. No
: > doubt we will have to answer many open questions and solve a variety of
: > complex problems, until we will get the systems and organisations suitable
: > for the Higher Education of the future. To mention only a few:
: > * Challenges of content: What contents should be selected and
: > generated for what kind of education product/service? Behind this question
: > there is e.g. a huge bulk of knowledge management problems.
: > * Challenges of IC-Technology: What kinds of computers, networks,
: > multimedia-systems etc. should be used, to support not only face-to-face
: > learning/teaching but also distance learning/ teaching, to supply learners
: > and teachers with the basis to interact as intensively as possible and to
: > apply group learning as well as individual learning.
: > * Challenges of pedagogical processes: How to achieve successful new
: > pedagogical processes, which are made possible by applying new media and
: > new technologies? What prerequisites and what effects will they have?
: > * Challenges of organisation: How should the processes of producing
: > education modules, of customising and transferring them to the customer,
: > of consulting/looking after the customer, of controlling effectiveness and
: > efficiency of teaching and learning processes be organised? Which
: > institutions are able and ready to take care of these different processes
: > for different types of learners?

: Call for Papers
:
: ECIS 2000 Track "Information Systems Challenges: Research Methodology,
: Teaching Methods
: and Practical Relevance"
:
:
: Objectives
:
: Information systems research covers a wide range of subjects - and
: applies research methods drawn from
: many disciplines, including management science, the social sciences,
: engineering and computer science.
: While some regard this diversity of methods as a prerequisite for
: productive interdisciplinary work, others
: complain about the lack of a coherent methodological paradigm within IS.
: At the same time there has long
: been a debate about the practical relevance of information systems
: research - a debate which has extended
: into our discussions in relation to curricula and corresponding teaching
: methods.
:
: This track is intended to provide a forum for researchers, students and
: practitioners who are interested in
: exploring these essential challenges. In order to emphasise the need for
: an interdisciplinary orientation,
: researchers from neighbouring disciplines such as management science,
: organisational studies, or computer
: science - are strongly encouraged to contribute their points of view.
: Possible contributions include full research
: papers and position papers (2 pages). The latter are intended to be
: presented within focused group
: discussions.
:
: This track also welcomes contributions on any issue that clearly
: advances the philosophical and conceptual
: foundations of information systems. These issues have previously been
: discussed within the Philosophical
: Aspects of Information Systems Symposium (PAIS) workshops, which were
: held at the University of the West
: of England, Bristol, in 1994 and 1998. In 2000, PAIS will be integrated
: into this track.
:
: Track Theme and Suggested Topics
:
: Research methods (formal, positivistic, hermeneutic, constructivistic,
: rigour vs. relevance, general frameworks, experiences, ...)
:
: Interaction with neighbouring disciplines (relevance of
: interdisciplinary work, managing interdisciplinary research teams ...)
:
: IS research in the past decade: lessons learnt, problems still to be
: solved
:
: IS research in the next decade: essential challenges, research
: strategies
:
: Strategies for linking theory and practice
:
: Profile of the discipline (relationship to neighbouring disciplines,
: particular strengths, ...)
:
: Building effective research teams (local and virtual) including both
: staff and students
:
: Cultural diversity: comparing IS and IS research internationally
: ambiguity, integration into enterprise models ...)
:
: International collaboration (communication infrastructure, international
: networks of excellence, Â…)
:
: Philosophical aspects of IS foundations and principles
