These emerging technologies range from collaboration software for business such as enterprise collaboration systems and social networking tools, distributed ledger technology, and Internet of Things, to public collaboration platforms such as social media crowdsourcing platforms, and open source communities (e.g., GitHub). Businesses and organizations use these systems for collaboration on projects, knowledge management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management. In recent years, digital business ecosystems and digital platform ecosystems have become increasingly studied and the terms have been used in both scientific and business worlds. Digital ecosystems are defined as a technology-enabled community of individual, organizational, and networked entities that contribute toward a focal value proposition (Jacobides et al. 2018). Digital ecosystems take the form of a complex network of affiliated actors, whose activities and outputs are linked in multilateral ways that cannot be reduced to the sum of bilateral connections between ecosystem participants but show dependencies running across many participants and along several dimensions (Jacobides, 2019). Studies tend to concur that ecosystems are not hierarchically managed, but few have specifically looked at the rules governing membership and relationships (Puranam & Puranam, 2012). Participants are linked together by several resources or product/service dependencies that confer distinct advantages that would have otherwise not emerged (Jacobides, 2019). Ecosystem actors can not be seen in isolation; instead, all of them need to interact and collaborate actively to create knowledge and innovation (Pappas, et al., 2018; Spagnoletti, et al., 2021; Subramaniam, 2022; Senyo, et al., 2019; Sutherland & Jarrahi, 2018). “Digital ecosystems” is a multidisciplinary concept that spans, among others, biology, engineering, management, and organization studies. From an engineering perspective, digital platforms and ecosystems are technical artifacts with a variety of peripherals and complements that, through a modular architecture, enable the management of collective actions, collaboration, and complexity (Baldwin & Woodard, 2009; Bolici, et al., 2022; Nambisan, et al., 2017; Spagnoletti, et al., 2015). From a managerial perspective, digital platforms and ecosystems afford business models, strategies, value co-creation, and network externalities (Gawer & Cusumano, 2014; Cuel, et al., 2021; Kazan, et al., 2018; Song, 2019; Sahut, et al., 2019; Tan, et al., 2015). From an organizational perspective, digital platforms and ecosystems are environments where innovation is enabled, behaviors are affected by networked externalities, and governance practices are studied (Cennamo & Santalo, 2013; de Reuver, et al., 2018; Huber, et al., 2017; Subramanian, 2022). Paramount importance to the topic of ecosystems and platforms is given in the context of electronic commerce, shaped as an ecosystem of sellers, consumers, and stakeholders, and characterized by unique innovation dynamics (Arakji & Lang, 2010; Khansa, Zobel & Goicochea 2012; Zhang, Lu & Kizildag, 2017; Li, Wang & Song, 2019; Li, et al. 2019). Despite the rapid advancement in research on these topics, various important questions remain to be answered, and this special issue explores methods and solutions for assessing the functioning and governance of these new organizational structures. We encourage contributions that identify and address the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns in the fields of digital platforms and ecosystems at the individual, organizational, and inter-organizational levels, paying specific attention to digital transformation approaches. This transformation, which has become a top priority for many cities and other local governments, offers great promise for improved well-being and prosperity but, also, poses significant challenges at the complex intersection of technology and society. A smart and connected community can be conceptualized as one that synergistically integrates intelligent technologies with the natural and built environments, including infrastructure, to improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of those who live, work, or travel within it. Building on the notion of community informatics, smart communities can be seen as enabling and empowering citizens and supporting the individual and communal quests for well-being. Although the literature is rich in references to smart cities and communities, this is still a developing and fuzzy concept due to its multidimensional and multifaceted aspect that goes beyond the mere use of technology and infrastructure. Although technology is a necessary condition to become smart, it is not the only aspect that defines smart cities and communities. Novel studies are indicating that emerging technologies have a huge influence on social life, catalyzing new needs of citizens and transforming the way they are addressed, influencing people’s ability to exercise their “right to the city/community” and impacting on social sustainability on several levels. City administration and community management, information integration, data quality, privacy and security, institutional arrangements, and citizen participation are therefore some of the issues that need greater attention to make a community smarter today and in the near future. Nonetheless, the literature on smart cities and communities is fragmented, particularly in terms of the strategies that different cities and communities should follow in order to become smarter. What most of the literature does agree on is that there is no single way to becoming smart and different communities have adopted different approaches that reflect their particularities. In addition, the advent of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, open government, open data, big data, blockchain, chatbots and so on, have opened new avenues for smart governance in the urban and communities’ contexts, which fosters new research on this area. This mini track aims at exploring these issues, paying particular attention to the challenges of smart cities and smart communities as well as to the impact of these initiatives to understand how new technologies can shape the social sustainability, the livability of local communities, and the wellbeing of its residents. It also focuses on the orchestrated interplay and balance of smart governance practices, smart public administration, smart communities, smart resources and talent leverage in urban, rural, and regional spaces facilitated by novel uses of ICT and other technologies. This requires careful team configuration. Distributed teams face many challenges of time, location, infrastructure, language, customs, socialization and politics. This is further compounded in globally distributed teams by diversity, nationality and cultural issues. As old issue are resolved, new challenges emerge that require knowledge from multiple disciplines such as information systems, social sciences, international management, leadership and political science. It is almost impossible for one individual to have expertise in so many domains, which makes this a very challenging but ultimately rewarding collaborative area of research. Given the richness and research potential of this area, it is essential to brainstorm and bring diverse points of view to develop underlying theory and frameworks. The mini track will attempt to accomplish these objectives. The mini track will address emerging issue such as diversity, culture, adaptability and agility related to teams in distributed group decision making, as well as the underlying theories of group dynamics, coordination, communications and decision-making in distributed environments, in creation of competitive advantage.
