Hi,
The *Australasian Journal of Information Systems *has just published its
latest special section.
*Selected Papers from the 2018 Australasian Conference on Information
Systems *
*Preface: Towards the Next Generation of Information Systems: Enhancing
Traceability and Transparency . Win, K. T., & Beydoun, G.*
https://doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v24i0.2823
*Consumer Trust in Food Safety Requires Information Transparency. Lam, T.
K., Heales, J., Hartley, N., & Hodkinson, C. *
https://doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v24i0.2219
*Abstract*This paper proposes a conceptual model to understand how
information transparency matters can support consumer trust in food safety.
Beside food labels, food product information can be disseminated by the
support of technologies including traceability systems and social media.
This article studies extant literature to provide a knowledge base for the
development of a conceptual model. Information provided by traceability
systems is deemed to increase a consumer’s knowledge of a food product.
Furthermore, social media is considered as a well-informed source that
provides some useful information to consumers. Therefore, we argue that
technology-supported information supports and enhances the information
consumers need to make their own judgement about the safety of a food
product. Three testable propositions are developed from a conceptual model
that provides insights into food information that consumers find helpful
for developing trust in food safety.
*Identification of Enterprise Social Network (ESN) Group Archetypes in ESN
Analytics: Metrics Selection and Case Application. Riemer, K., Lee, L. L.,
Kjaer, C., & Haeffner, A. *
https://doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v24i0.2355
*Abstract*With the proliferation of Enterprise Social Networks (ESN), the
measurement of ESN activity becomes increasingly relevant. The emerging
field of ESN analytics aims to develop metrics and models to measure and
classify user activity to support organisational goals and outcomes. In
this paper we focus on a neglected area of ESN analytics, the
classification of activity in ESN groups. We engage in explorative research
to identify a set of metrics that divides an ESN group sample into distinct
types. We collaborate with Sydney-based service provider SWOOP Analytics
who provided access to actual ESN meta data describing activity in 350
groups across three organisations. By employing clustering techniques, we
derive a set of four group types: broadcast streams, information forums,
communities of practice and project teams. We collect and reflect on
feedback from ESN champions in fourteen organisations. For ESN analytics
research we contribute a set of metrics and group types. For practice we
envision a method that enables group managers to compare aspirations for
their groups to embody a certain group type, with actual activity patterns.
*Applying Complex Adaptive Systems Theory to Understand Distributed
Participatory Design in Crowdsourced Information Systems Development.
Kautz, K., Bjerknes, G., Fisher, J., & Jensen, T. *
https://doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v24i0.2225
*Abstract*Contemporary information systems development (ISD) takes place in
a dynamic environment; it is generally acknowledged as a complex activity.
It has been proposed that ISD projects should be viewed as a complex
adaptive system (CAS) and that these projects are better understood through
the application of CAS. Distributed participatory design (DPD) is an
approach to contemporary ISD where different, geographically dispersed
stakeholders, often called the crowd, participate voluntarily and typically
unaffiliated with the development organisation in the development and
design of information systems in distributed design teams which are mostly
online on Internet, web-based, and social media platforms. Going beyond
individual methods, techniques, and practices, the objective of this
research is twofold as we answer the two research questions: how are DPD
projects in crowdsourced ISD managed and performed in their entirety and
how does CAS theory provide plausible explanations and contribute to an
understanding of contemporary ISD? For this purpose, we present a case of
DPD in crowdsourced ISD in an intergovernmental, not-for-profit environment
in the context of a DPD project which engaged Pacific Youth in the
development of a digital game where we applied CAS theory to better
understand and gain insights for ISD theory and practice.
*Collaborative Modelling and Visualization of Business Ecosystems: Insights
from two Action Design Research Case Studies. * *Faber, A.,
Hernandez-Mendez, A., Rehm, S.-V., & Matthes, F. *
https://doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v24i0.2229
*Abstract*Business ecosystems are increasingly gaining relevance in
research and practice. Because ecosystems progressively change, enterprises
are required to analyse their ecosystem, in order to identify and respond
to such changes. For gaining a comprehensive picture of the ecosystem,
various enterprise stakeholders need to be involved in the analysis
process. We use an Action Design Research approach to implement a
collaborative process for modelling and visualizing business ecosystems in
two case studies. We look at the challenges of the collaborative process
and study how a model-driven approach addresses these challenges. We
validate and discuss the modelling process along six steps; definition of
the business ecosystem focus, model instantiation, data collection,
provision of tailored visualizations, model adaption, and using
visualizations ‘to tell a story’. In a cross-case analysis, we draw
conclusions with respect to process implementation and the role of
visualizations.

Call for Demos
** IMPORTANT NOTE **
Due to concerns about COVID-19, RecSys 2020 will cancel its physical
component and go fully virtual. To support authors through these
stressful times, deadlines are extended.
Demos show implementations of novel, interesting, and important
recommender systems' concepts or applications. Allowing potential users
to see and use a demo of a research work makes them excited about it –
it makes the work real and tangible. Demos also allow developers from
small start-ups to large industries to present new recommender ideas and
get valuable feedback from the recommender systems community.
RecSys has an excellent history of being well-attended by industry
representatives — past conferences have had attendees and presenters
from Netflix, Amazon, Booking, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Criteo,
Pandora, Spotify, etc. The blend of industry and academic attention
provides an excellent environment to demonstrate and discuss latest
inventions or ideas.
We invite demonstrations relevant to all aspects of recommender systems,
including, but not limited to:
* Interaction techniques (preference elicitation interfaces,
recommendation presentation, explanations, and more)
* Tools for development and analysis of recommender systems (design
tools, evaluation systems, analytics tools)
* Innovative applications of recommender systems
* Recommender user experiments
* Recommender platforms
Accepted demonstrations will be published in the conference proceedings.
Authors will also be required to present a poster of their work at the
conference.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically.
Demonstrations must be submitted to PCS by 23:59, AoE (Anywhere on
Earth) on June 8th, 2020. There will be no extensions to the submission
deadline.
Formatting. ACM is changing the archive format of its publications to
separate content from presentation in the new Digital Library, enhance
accessibility, and improve the flexibility and resiliency of our
publications. Following the new ACM publication workflow, all authors
should submit manuscripts for review in a single-column format. The
maximum length for demonstrations is 3 pages (excluding references) in
the new single-column format. Instructions for Word and LaTeX authors
are given below:
* Microsoft Word: Write your submission using the Submission Template
(Review Submission Format). Follow the embedded instructions to apply
the paragraph styles to your various text elements. The text is in
single-column format at this stage and no additional formatting is
required at this point.
* LaTeX: Please use the latest version of the Master Article Template -
LaTeX to create your submission. You must use the "manuscript" option
with the \documentclass[manuscript]{acmart} command to generate the
output in a single-column format which is required for review. Please
see the LaTeX documentation and ACM's LaTeX best practices guide for
further instructions. To ensure 100% compatibility with The ACM
Publishing System (TAPS), please restrict the use of packages to the
whitelist of approved LaTeX packages.
Authors are strongly encouraged to provide "alt text" (alternative text)
for floats (images, tables, etc.) in their content so that readers with
disabilities can be given descriptive information for these floats that
are important to the work. The descriptive text will be displayed in
place of a float if the float cannot be loaded. This benefits the author
as well as it broadens the reader base for the author's work. Moreover,
the alt text provides in-depth float descriptions to search engine
crawlers, which helps to properly index these floats.
Should you have any questions or issues going through the instructions
above, please contact support at acmtexsupport(a)aptaracorp.com for both
LaTeX and Microsoft Word inquiries.
Accepted demonstrations will be later submitted to ACM's new production
platform where authors will be able to review PDF and HTML output
formats before publication.
Contents. The description of the demo must include the following:
* An overview of the algorithm or system that is the core of the demo,
including citations to any publications that support the work.
* A discussion of the purpose and the novelty of the demo.
* A description of the required setup. If the system will feature an
installable component (e.g., mobile app) or website for users to use
throughout or after the conference, please mention this.
* A link to a narrated screen capture of your system in action, ideally
a video. (This section will be removed for the camera-ready version of
accepted contributions.)
Anonymity. All submissions will be single-blind peer reviewed. This
means that submissions should include information identifying the
authors and their organization.
Originality. Demos must not be under review in any other conference at
the time of submission and must contain novel contributions.
IMPORTANT DATES
* Demo submission deadline: June 8th, 2020

Call For Papers: HICSS 54 (2021)-Mini-track on Augmented Intelligence
For Knowledge Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems Track
Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-54): Jan 5th
to 8th 2021| Kauai, Hawaii
Call for Papers
Intelligence Augmentation is defined as enhancing and elevating human's
ability, intelligence, and performance through the help of information
technology. Even though the underlying technology empowering
intelligence augmentation and artificial intelligence overlap, however,
the goals and focuses of these two topics are fundamentally different.
Intelligence augmentation put the emphasis on the human agents who use
the technology and on the interactive human-machine partnership. Putting
it in different words: using technology to enable humans to be better
humans. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, focuses on the
development of technology (i.e. robots, avatars, chatbots, etc.) to
replace human agents or perform at the level as human agents.
Intelligence augmentation is at the frontier of the future for
technology. Major technology companies have begun research and
development of various technology to augment the work of employees to
increase efficiency and improve productivity
. Intelligence augmentation technologies are currently used across a
number of fields, including healthcare, financial, retail,
manufacturing, sales and marketing.
This minitrack covers a wide range of topics within this area. We
welcome researches on the design and development of technology that aids
human agents, the perceptions, attitudes, and responses of the human
agents towards the technology, the impact of the systems on different
levels (individual, group, organizational, and even social level) from
multiple angles, the nature of the symbiotic relationships among the
systems the human agents, the tasks, and the environment, and the
cognitive processes as well as the ethical issues surrounding augmented

<mailto:katina.michael@asu.edu>Overview of Special Issue
Information Systems Development (ISD) has been part of the intellectual
core of information systems for over 40 years (Obrand et al., 2018;
Sidorova et al., 2008). Its chequered history of successes and failures
has, however, been an ongoing concern of the IS research community
(Dwivedi et al., 2015; Hassan & Mathiassen, 2017). Despite efforts to
improve the management of ISD projects, these efforts have not had the
desired effect (Lim et al., 2011). There is anecdotal evidence that
business analytics can help project managers to (i) understand the
dynamics and collective state of complex projects, (ii) detect and
forecast trends, (iii) improve the effectiveness of risk models, (iv)
evaluate the effectiveness of a change to the development process, and
(v) distinguish questions of ‘information’ from questions of ‘insight’
(Davenport et al., 2010).
Business analytics are frequently referred to as ‘the techniques,
technologies, systems, practices, methodologies, and applications that
analyse critical business data to help an enterprise better understand
its business and market and make timely decisions’ (Chen et al., 2012,
p.1166). Yet, much of the research conducted to date has focused on the
technologies of business analytics and not enough on the people and
their organisational context in which such technologies are intended to
be used (Abbasi et al, 2017; Conboy et al., 2018; Mikalef et al., 2019).
This is a significant limitation given that the ISD environment is a
highly metric oriented, complex, and socially embedded activity that is
continuously changing (Conboy, 2009; Kudaravalli et al., 2017; Windeler
et al., 2017).
This special issue seeks to collect contemporary research on the latest
developments and challenges of how organisations exploit business
analytics to support project/portfolio managers, project teams, and
other project stakeholders.
Indicative List of Anticipated Themes
This special issue seeks a wide range of articles that draw on diverse
project settings, theories, and approaches to understand the different
aspects of business analytics as applied to the context of ISD. The
following questions are of interest for the special issue:
• How can business analytics be used to better understand and manage ISD
projects?
• What value does business analytics provide to ISD management and
development teams?
• What tensions arise from the integration of business analytics with
traditional and agile methods and practices?
• What are the emerging best practices that enable business analytics to
be embedded within the ISD process and the wider organisation?
• Does the deployment of business analytics make existing agile methods
and practices less valuable or even obsolete?
• What new metrics and standards can business analytics provide to
manage and control ISD projects more effectively?
• How can business analytics enable organisational learning and
innovation in the context of ISD?
• How are business analytics being applied in various types
(distributed, large scale) of ISD projects?
• How can business analytics support the scaling of ISD projects?
• What are the change management and organisational cultural issues that
need to be considered when developing analytical capabilities?
• How can business analytics provide new ways of working in ISD projects?
• What ethical issues stem from the use of business analytics in ISD
projects?
• How can business analytics be used to support more effective decision
making?
• What are the new theories and theoretical developments to explain the
implementation and use of business analytics in ISD projects?
These questions are not intended to be exhaustive. Rather they are
intended to stimulate thinking about the role of business analytics in
the management of ISD projects across various levels of analysis - from
participants in individual projects through projects, programs,
portfolios, organisations, and the wider society. We welcome submissions
that address questions pertaining to all aspects of the intersection of
business analytics and ISD project management.

Call for Industry Talk Proposals
** IMPORTANT NOTE **
Due to concerns about COVID-19, RecSys 2020 will cancel its physical
component and go fully virtual. To support authors through these
stressful times, deadlines are extended.
The ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2020) is the premier
venue for research and applications of recommendation technologies. One
of our goals is to connect communities of researchers and practitioners
from both academia and industry in order to exchange ideas, discuss
problems, and share solutions.
Industry practitioners are invited to submit talk proposals to the
RecSys conference industry track. The industry track is focused on
challenges and practical solutions to significant real-world issues
faced by industry practitioners. We encourage submissions that describe
substantial real-world challenges and novel deployed systems that power
recommendations in commercial settings. All submissions will be reviewed
by the Industry chairs and the best proposals will be chosen based on
merit and contribution to the community.
Examples of talk topics include, but are not limited to:
* Challenges faced by practitioners that are under-studied in the
research community and practical solutions
* Novel techniques that solve significant issues in practice
* Case studies of real-world implementations
* Evaluation metrics and studies
* Field and user studies
* Lessons learned from real-world deployments
* Novel recommender system applications
* Fairness and bias of recommender systems
Authors of the selected proposals will give an oral presentation in the
Industry Track and will also be invited to present a poster at the
conference poster sessions.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically. Papers must
be submitted to PCS by 23:59, AoE (Anywhere on Earth) on June 8th, 2020.
There will be no extensions to the submission deadline.
Formatting. ACM is changing the archive format of its publications to
separate content from presentation in the new Digital Library, enhance
accessibility, and improve the flexibility and resiliency of our
publications. Following the new ACM publication workflow, all authors
should submit manuscripts for review in a single-column format. The
maximum length for industry talk proposals is 2 pages (excluding
references) in the new single-column format. Instructions for Word and
LaTeX authors are given below:
* Microsoft Word: Write your paper using the Submission Template (Review
Submission Format). Follow the embedded instructions to apply the
paragraph styles to your various text elements.
Accepted proposals will be later submitted to ACM's new production
platform where authors will be able to review PDF and HTML output
formats before publication.
Contents. Industry talk proposals must include the following:
* Title and abstract of the proposal presentation
* Short CV of the presenter(s) (up to 300 words)
Anonymity. All submissions will be single-blind peer reviewed. This
means that submissions should include information identifying the
authors and their organization.
IMPORTANT DATES
* Proposal submission deadline: June 8th, 2020
* Author notification: July 13th, 2020
* Camera-ready version deadline: July 27th, 2020
