The recent rapid advances in information systems have created both challenges and opportunities to develop new business services via innovative business processes. This workshop promotes theoretical research in business process management and service science. On one hand, driven by the need to solve practical problems, the business process modeling and automation research has been largely prescriptive. There has been a lack of strong theories in this area, and we believe that it is essential to develop new theories about business process and service automation. On the other hand, more recently blockchain is poised to become the most exciting invention after the Internet; while the latter connects the world to enable new business models based on online business processes, the former will help resolve the trust issue more efficiently via distributed and decentralized computing. While the recent advancements in fintech made blockchain a practical technology, smart contracts are now getting more attention. Smart contracts are essentially a transaction protocol that executes the terms of a computerized contract. The potential business impacts of blockchain and smart contracts are challenging existing business models, leading to fascinating research opportunities in business process and service applications. The purpose of the SIGBPS workshop this year is to provide an interdisciplinary forum to discuss new research directions in the areas of building trustworthy business processes and services with blockchains and smart contract technologies. We have seen testimonial studies on how to examine, design, implement, and deploy solutions based on blockchains and smart contracts to resolve research and practical issues in BPS applications. Such applications may benefit many research frontier domains, for example, information systems in Finance, Supply chain, Education and Healthcare. This year’s workshop will focus on the research and development of blockchain technologies and applications with a workshop theme called “Security and Trust in the Blockchain Era.” This theme is to signify the unique capability of blockchain technologies and applications in the enablement of secure and efficient information flows across organizational boundaries, resulting in lower process costs, better business trust, and more novel business collaborations. Given the nature and purposes of this workshop, we invite research papers of no more than five pages that are well articulated and formatted in single line spacing, Times New Roman, 11-point font, and 1 inch margin all around. We particularly seek position papers but also welcome conceptual papers with either theoretical or application flavors, as well as research-in-progress papers. Case, empirical, and behavioral studies relevant to the following topics are welcome. Suggested research topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Security issues in blockchain-enabled systems and platforms - Computational trust in blockchain-enabled systems and applications - Open collaboration processes and services in blockchain-enabled systems - Design science research in BPS applications of blockchain-driven smart contracts - Technical and application solutions for smart contracts and BPS applications - Empirical studies on blockchain, smart contracts and BPS applications - Trust, privacy, and behavioral issues in smart contracts under blockchains - Regulation, governance, and standardization of smart contracts in BPS applications - BPS applications of contract theory in smart contract management - Blockchain-driven protocols for BPS smart contracts - BPS applications with blockchain and smart contracts in healthcare, supply chain, finance, education - BPS case studies of blockchain and smart contract adoption - Economics and game theory of smart contracts The workshop will be organized with special tracks of interests. Digital platforms are restructuring how companies and industries operate, and failure to adopt platforms impacts competitiveness and future growth. A common perspective on platforms is to understand them as multi-sided markets based on enabling value-creating interactions between external producers and consumers. Recent information systems literature has improved our understanding of key drivers, business models and impacts of digital platforms (e.g. Constantinides, Henfridsson and Parker 2018; Parker, Van Alstyne and Choudary 2016). The aim of this special issue is to identify and foster a relatively unexplored research area of the significance and impact of digital platforms in developing countries in relation to socio-economic development. Increasingly, discourses around digitalization have become central to research and practice concerning ICT for development (ICT4D), with an emergent research agenda that centres on exploring the significance of software platforms and digital innovation in relation to socio-economic development (see Nielsen 2017 and Koskinen et al 2018). We are seeking contributions on digital platforms from developmental, social, economic, technical, organizational, personal and environmental perspectives. While platforms can facilitate transactions, their significance correspondingly relates to facilitating innovation and providing organizational flexibility. Moreover, while existing research on digital platforms primarily focuses on the private sector, platforms may be equally significant in public and not-for-profit sectors. * Based on empirical research and rooted in a concrete developing country context, we expect contributions to offer new empirical insights, develop new concepts and theories, and offer directions for practice and policy. Exemplar topics and types of contributions include: - Examples and implications of how developing countries participate in and take relevant roles in digital platform innovation. This can include examples of digital innovation by developing countries; theorizing digital innovation within developing country contexts, and how digital innovation relates to development. - Explorations of digital platforms in private, public and informal sectors. - Theoretical and conceptual developments related to what digital platforms are in the context of developing countries and related key concepts such as digital innovation, platform architecture, and software and innovation ecosystems. - Explorations of the potential gap and tensions between digital platforms developed in, for and by the global North and the global South. - Examples and implications of Southern countries emerging as important innovators in digital platforms. - Critical implications of digital platforms related to ethics, privacy, and security in the context of developing countries. - Case studies of digital platforms and business models emerging in the development context and how they as alternative models can foster development and sustainable livelihoods. * Paper Development Workshop A paper development workshop will be organized at the 15th International Conference on Social Implications of Computers in Developing Countries (IFIP 9.4) conference in Dar es Salam, Tanzania, May 1-3, 2019. We will organise this workshop around papers submitted to the conference track on Digital Platforms and Development, but it will also be open for all to participate. * Submission procedure This is a double Special Issue for the Information Systems Journal (ISJ) and the Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries (EJISDC). Authors can submit their paper to the special issue in either ISJ or EJISDC. ISJ is a premier international journal promoting the study of, and interest in, information systems. It welcomes articles on research, practice, experience, current issues and debates. The ISJ encourages submissions that reflect the wide and interdisciplinary nature of the subject and articles that integrate technological disciplines with social, contextual and management issues, based on research using appropriate research methods. The ISJ has particularly built its reputation by publishing qualitative research and it continues to welcome such papers. EJISDC is one of the foremost international forums for practitioners, teachers, researchers and policy makers to share their knowledge and experience in design, development, implementation, management and evaluation of information systems in developing countries. EJISDC focuses on the digital divide. Its aim is to situation contemporary trends in ICTs within a fully global context. AI has amplified our productivity as well as biases. John Giannandrea, who leads AI at Google, recently lamented in the MIT Technology Review that the dangers posed by the ability of AI systems to learn human prejudices were far greater than those posed by killer-robots. This phenomenon is problematic because AI systems are making millions of decisions every minute many of which are invisible to the users and incomprehensible to the designers. Their opaqueness is a significant cause of worry and leaves many unanswered questions. Fairness, Trust and Ethics are at the core of many of the issues underlying the implications of AI. Fairness is undermined when managers rely blindly on “objective” AI outputs to “augment” or replace their decision making. Managers often ignore the limitations of their assumptions and the relevance of the data that was used to train and test AI models, resulting in bias decisions that are hard to detect or appeal. Trust is undercut, when AI is used to render false or misleading images of individuals saying or doing things that are simply not true. These false images are making it difficult for society to trust what they see or hear. Ethical challenges are presented when decisions used by AI lead to further inequalities in the society. Examples include: displaced workers and shortages of affordable housing due to rental apartments and housing units being diverted to higher paying Airbnb short term vacationers. Despite the potential transformative effects, research on AI in the Information Systems field is still scarce, and as a result, our knowledge on the impacts of AI are still far from conclusive. Yet, it is very important from the business and technical perspective that we research and examine issues of fairness, trust and ethics with AI. This examination is critical as issues of fairness, trust and ethics lie at the heart of addressing the new challenges facing the development and use of AI throughout our society. This is especially true, as there has been a rapid increase in the number of applications of AI in an ever increasing number of new areas. In all, AI has the potential to disrupt and dramatically change the interactions between humans and technologies. This Special Issue on AI Fairness, Trust and Ethics calls for research that can unpack the potential, challenges, impacts, and theoretical implications of AI. We welcome research from different perspectives regardless of the approach or methodology. Submissions with novel theoretical implications that span disciplines are strongly encouraged.
