Subject: [AISWorld] Call for papers: JAIS - MISQE Joint Special Issue
on Artificial Intelligence in Organizations

Call for Papers
Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) – MISQ
Executive (MISQE) Joint Special Issue on
Artificial Intelligence in Organizations: Opportunities for Management
and Implications for IS Research
Guest Editors: Hind Benbya, Stella Pachidi, Tom Davenport, Sirkka Jarvenpaa
Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a fundamental, pervasive
economic and organizational phenomenon that holds many theoretical and
practical opportunities and challenges for management and information
systems scholars. Recent advances in AI have given rise to a diverse set
of technologies able to perform human-like tasks such as complex
decision-making, reasoning and learning, sophisticated analytics and
pattern recognition, visual acuity, speech recognition and language
translation as well as emotion detection (Anderson, Rainie and
Luchsinger, 2018).
Today, companies across industries increasingly rely on AI technologies
to automate structured and repetitive work processes, gain insights
through extensive analysis of large datasets and engage with customers
and employees in new ways (Davenport, 2018).
Firms also combine different AI technologies to perform tasks as diverse
as selecting suitable applicants for organizational positions, advising
clients on financial products, performing financial transactions,
deciding which customers to insure, scheduling complex logistics,
diagnosing patients and suggesting therapies, and forecasting
technological developments.
As the adoption of AI technologies across organizations is increasing,
AI may alter working and organizing in significant ways. Current debate
centers on the extent to which AI technologies would substitute or
complement humans in the workforce (Larson, 2010; Aleksander, 2017).
Research is required into the effects of AI technologies including
transforming expertise in organizations (Beane, 2018), offering novel
forms of coordination and control (Faraj, Pachidi and Sayegh, 2018), and
changing the nature and the future of work (Schwartz et al. 2019). The
conditions under which new human-machine configurations can or cannot
have effects such as amplify human ability, perform key processes
autonomously, contribute to innovativeness and affect both short-term
and sustained competitive advantage remain to be explored (Benbya and
Leidner, 2018; Yan et al. 2018).
The experiences of early adopters of AI technologies demonstrate that
such technologies may produce no, unknown, or unexpected outcomes,
raising new challenges and concerns about the long-term impact of
investments in AI in organizations. Emerging challenges include
addressing ethical concerns such as AI bias, trust, and transparency
(Daugherty et al. 2018); altering how people and things are valued
(Tegmark 2017); and eroding expertise and occupational boundaries (Faraj
et al. 2018).
It is therefore important to improve our understanding about the
potential effects of AI technologies in organizations (such as
transforming dynamics, patterns and structure of organizations,
management), and the broader societal, legal, and ethical implications
of AI. Advancing both practitioner and academic work in these areas is
of key importance at this particular moment in time, as practitioners
and academics are just beginning to understand the transformative
potential of AI technologies.
This joint JAIS-MISQE special issue seeks original research on
“Artificial Intelligence in Organizations: Opportunities for Management
and Implications for IS Research.”
Some of the topics of interest of this joint special issue include (but
are not limited to):
* Transformative effects of AI technologies
* Emergence of new configurations of human-machine interactions and
their impact on working and organizing
* Failures and errors with AI technologies
* Usage and consequences of different AI technologies (e.g., robotics,
machine learning, chatbots, digital twins, etc.) across industries
* Unintended consequences of AI implementation and use
* Psychological, social and cultural aspects of human computer and robot
interactions
* Organizational, societal and ethical implications of AI
* Challenges of AI for decision making
* Impact of AI use on knowledge and expertise
* Design approaches combining human-machine capabilities to elevate
performance
* Paradoxical effects of algorithmic technologies
* Embedding smart machines into products, services, strategies, cultures
and behaviors
Rationale for the JAIS-MISQE Joint Special issue
A major mission of the information systems discipline is to produce
knowledge that is both academically rigorous and applicable to IS
managers. To bridge the research-practice divide, the editors and
guest-editors of this joint MISQ Executive and the Journal of the
Association of Information Systems special issue, offer IS scholars a
unique opportunity to develop both a theoretical contribution (targeted
at JAIS) and practical implications (targeted at MISQE) on the topic of
Artificial Intelligence in Work and Organizations.
To be considered for the joint SI, authors are invited to use the same
cases or data sets to develop two papers: a theoretical contribution for
JAIS and a practical contribution for MISQE. The special issue is open
to any type of research and methodological approach and encourages
innovative research methods and designs that allow both rigor and
relevance into this phenomenon.
There will be opportunity for interested authors to discuss their
research plans with members of the editorial team of the special issue
at the pre-ICIS 2019 workshop in Munich. Participation in this event is
highly recommended and requires sending an email with an extended
abstract of the research to one of the editors by September 1st 2019.
This summary should include: key phenomena and research question,
methods and case material, plan for the JAIS submission (e.g.
theoretical and conceptual framing and expected contributions), plan for
the MISQE submission (e.g., conceptual framework, unique insights and
lessons learned). Logistical details regarding location and timing for
the Munich session will be provided to the participants in due course.
While submission to the workshop is not a requirement, prospective
authors are encouraged to send their extended abstracts to the Special
Issue editors for development feedback before submission.

Introducing ITIL Framework in Small Enterprises: Tailoring ITSM Practices
to the Size of Company
Abir El Yamami (SSDIA Laboratory, Casablanca, Morocco), Khalifa Mansouri
(SSDIA Laboratory, Casablanca, Morocco), Mohammed Qbadou (SSDIA
Laboratory, Casablanca, Morocco), El Hossein Illoussamen (SSDIA
Laboratory, Casablanca, Morocco)
Given the critical consequences that IT can have on the survival of SMEs
in a competitive environment, ITSM practices have becoming a necessity for
SMEs that must be investigated. ITIL is criticized as being appropriate
for large enterprises and less for SMEs. Thus, it calls for tailoring this
framework while taking into consideration the specific realities of small
companies. In this context, this article provides a practical tool
formally developed according to the design science research approach, and
it addresses an area of relevance to both practitioners and academics and
suggests solutions that can help managers to personalize IT service
practices to suit the characteristics of small scale enterprises. Results
show that the flexible nature of the proposed framework has enabled to
overcome the main difficulties of ITIL components implementation in small
scale environments. It is found that the integrated use of balanced
scorecard perspectives and ITIL practices can help SMEs to better
implement ITIL components, achieving in that way a better alignment
between the business and the IT.

A QoS-Enhanced Model for Inter-Site Backup Operations in Cloud SDN
Ammar AlSous (Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Oldenburg,
Germany), Jorge Marx Gómez (Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg,
Oldenburg, Germany)
Data centers backup using a cloud service is a significant operation that
saves the data from being lost. It reduces the costs and optimize the
hardware provisioning level. Software defined networking (SDN) is a
growing network paradigm which divides the usual monolithic control and
data plane found in the classical network paradigm. It improves and
simplifies the network management process. This research addresses a
specific problem in SDNs regarding Quality of Service (QoS) target
achievement in backup operations between data centers (inter-site). This
fundamental backup activity has special QoS requirements. The aim of this
article is to provide a new cost-efficient inter-site backup model for
cloud networks using the SDN technique. It helps in choosing a path to
perform the backup in the current network according to customer's and
provider's requirements, while taking the QoS parameters into
consideration simultaneously, in order to achieve an efficient-cost
solution.

Towards Benefiting Both Cloud Users and Service Providers Through Resource
Provisioning
Durga S. (Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore,
India), Mohan S. (Department of Computer Engineering, Al Yamamah
University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), Dinesh Peter J. (Karunya
Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore, India), Martina Rebecca
Nittala (Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore, India)
Cloud users expect high Quality of service (QoS) levels within their
budget and the cloud service providers (CSPs) to maximize their profits,
always strive for the cost and energy minimization and better resource
utilization. Any error in the management of resources causes Service Level
Agreement (SLA) violations, high penalties, low customer satisfaction, and
long-term losses. The objective of this article is to present a literature
review on various resource provisioning strategies and also to present a
novel cluster-based resource provisioning (CB-RP) technique that satisfies
the needs of both cloud users and CSP. CB-RP employs a heart algorithm to
cluster the arriving requests based on its characteristics. The CB-RP
technique aims to analyze the requests and provision the resources
according to the request category. Simulation results show that our
technique produces significant improvements in terms of cost savings,
resource utilization and turnaround time compared with state of art
technique.

Business Continuity Management in Data Center Environments
Holmes E. Miller (Muhlenberg College, Allentown, USA), Kurt J. Engemann
(Iona College, Rochelle, USA)
In this article, the authors discuss how business continuity methodologies
can be used by data centers to respond to natural disasters, man-made
disasters, and accidents. Because organizations depend on computing
services, which may become unavailable when disasters strike, prudent risk
management processes can provide for continuation and recovery of
operations. With a focus on data centers, this article discusses the
business continuity plan development process. This article also considers
elements of a business continuity management plan, which includes strategy
development, preparedness, mitigation, exercises, and response and
recovery, and discuss business continuity strategies for colocation and
cloud-based data center architectures. Finally, the authors discuss how
the ordered weighted average (OWA) methodology can be used to incorporate
a decision makers risk profile when confronted with decisions related to
the processes discussed.

Exploring ITIL® Implementation Challenges in Latin American Companies
Teresa Lucio-Nieto (Universidad Iberoamericana, Customer Care Associates,
Mexico City, México), Dora Luz González-Bañales (Tecnológico Nacional de
México, Instituto Tecnológico de Durango, Durango, México)
The purpose of this article is to explore the challenges faced when
implementing the information technology infrastructure library (ITIL)
framework. An online survey was completed by 169 Latin American companies.
Questions focused mainly on the current perceptions and assessment of ITIL
benefits. A descriptive statistical analysis approach was employed.
Evidence suggests that the main challenges of implementing ITIL are the
time devoted by the information technology staff involved in the project,
their understanding of ITIL purposes, and the support they receive from
senior management. Participants suggested that the existence of a service
management office (SMO) could represent a way of addressing these
challenges and to more effectively realize ITIL benefits.

(Title: FRAMING ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING WITHIN GENERAL SYSTEM'S THEORY -
PERSPECTIVES OF A HUMAN CENTERED FUTURE)
THEME:
Reflecting Human Authority and Responsibility in Enterprise Models and
Software Specifications
======================================================
BMSD - the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON BUSINESS MODELING AND SOFTWARE
DESIGN, is a leading international discussion and knowledge
dissemination forum that brings together Researchers and Practitioners
interested in:
(i) Modeling in general and in particular - Conceptual Modeling, Goal
Modeling, Value Modeling, Business/Enterprise Modeling, Process
Modeling, Model-Driven Engineering;
(ii) Enterprise Engineering and its relation to Software Generation;
(iii) Information Systems Architectures and Design;
(iv) Data Analytics and its relevance to Enterprise (Information) Systems;
(v) "Hot" topics relevant to Business Modeling and Software Design, such
as Blockchain Technology and Internet-of-Things.
Adequate business models are of huge importance not only for
understanding and (re-)engineering an organization but also for
automating (part of) its processes by means of software systems. Not
grasping correctly and exhaustively an enterprise system would
inevitably lead to consequent software failures. It is therefore claimed
that software generation should essentially have its roots in
corresponding enterprise engineering models.
======================================================

Sousse, 3000 years old, is a city with a rich cultural heritage as well
as an important touristic resort. A hot semi-arid climate moderated by a
seaside location makes it an all-season resort with a vibrant nightlife.
A medina, surrounded by its city walls and fortifications, is of
historical interest and includes open and covered bazaars (souks).
Classified monuments include the Ribat fortress, the Great Mosque, and a
historical museum in the Kasbah citadel with mosaics from the area's
many ancient Roman villas. UNESCO declared the medina of Sousse a World
Heritage Site in 1988, citing among various things its preservation from
modern development.
