Smart Grid Topologies Paving the Way for an Urban Resilient Continuity
Management
Sadeeb Simon Ottenburger (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology - KIT,
Karlsruhe, Germany), Thomas Münzberg (German Red Cross – State Association
Westphalia-Lippe, Bamberg, Germany), Misha Strittmatter (Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology - KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany)
The generation and supply of electricity is currently about to undergo a
fundamental transition that includes extensive development of smart grids.
Smart grids are huge and complex networks consisting of a vast number of
devices and entities which are connected with each other. This opens new
variations of disruption scenarios which can increase the vulnerability of
a power distribution network. However, the network topology of a smart grid
has significant effects on urban resilience particularly referring to the
adequate provision of infrastructures. Thus, topology massively
codetermines the degree of urban resilience, i.e. different topologies
enable different strategies of power distribution. Therefore, this article
introduces a concept of criticality adapted to a power system relying on an
advanced metering infrastructure. The authors propose a two-stage
operationalization of this concept that refers to the design phase of a
smart grid and its operation mode, targeting at an urban resilient power
flow during power shortage.

European Expectations of Disaster Information provided by Critical
Infrastructure Operators: Lessons from Portugal, France, Norway and Sweden
Laura Petersen (Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), Essonne,
France), Laure Fallou (Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC),
Essonne, France), Paul Reilly (University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK),
Elisa Serafinelli (University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK)
Previous research into social media crisis communication has tended to
focus on use by emergency managers rather than other key stakeholder,
critical infrastructure (CI) operators. This article adds to the field by
empirically investigating public expectations of information provided by CI
operators during crisis situations and if CI operators currently meet such
expectations. It draws on key themes that emerged from a review of the
literature on public expectations of disaster related information shared
via social media. Then, it presents the results of an online questionnaire
and interview-based study of disaster-vulnerable communities in France,
Norway, Portugal and Sweden. Results indicate that members of the public
expect CI operators to provide disaster related information via traditional
and social media, but not necessarily respond to their queries on social
media. Operators appear to meet public expectations of traditional media
use, but should expand their current practices to include digital media.
Recommendations for CI operators on how to do use social media follow.

Understanding Sense-Making on Social Media During Crises: Categorization of
Sense-Making Barriers and Strategies
Stefan Stieglitz (University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany), Milad
Mirbabaie (University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany), Jennifer Fromm
(University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany)
Individuals are increasingly using social media during crisis situations to
seek information. However, little is known about how they utilize social
media to gain an understanding of crisis situations. The aim of this study
was to close this gap by conducting sense-making interviews with 18 German
social media users. A qualitative content analysis revealed the following
sense-making barriers: low information value, negative emotions, biased
reporting, taking advantage, volume of information, limited knowledge,
speed of information dissemination, and technical barriers. Furthermore,
users applied the individual sense-making strategies of searching,
selecting, verifying, enriching, interpreting, and sorting, as well as the
collective strategies of distributing, communicating, and reporting. This
article contributes to research by providing categorizations of
sense-making barriers and strategies in the context of crisis situations.
Furthermore, suggestions are made for how emergency agencies could utilize
social media for crisis and continuity management.

Algorithms
Special Issue on "Humanistic Data Mining: Tools and Applications"
http://www.mdpi.com/journal/algorithms/special_issues/Humanistic_Data_Minin…
**Submission Deadline: October 31, 2018 (extended)**
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Digital data mining could be described as one of the most important,
computationally intensive and challenging tasks of our era. As this
observation applies both to the research community, which is faced with
enormous challenges derived from (big-)data management as well as new
emerging disciplines like, for instance, precision agriculture, and the
applied world, in terms, for instance, of social data handling and
related social apps, it is becoming evident that new approaches have to
be followed and new tools and applications have to invented in order to
efficiently handle the vast amounts of information.
The aim of the “Mining Humanistic Data Workshop”, and by association
of the proposed Special Issue, is formed around two main pillars. The
first pillar focuses on the primitive information and knowledge
analysis, as well as the extraction of the inherited knowledge. The task
here is to achieve a better understanding of human activities associated
to the respective computational tasks. The second pillar aims to exploit
the extracted knowledge by incorporating it into smart tools and
applications; the latter will ultimately make the life of involved users
easier with respect to their everyday life.
This Special Issue aims to bring together interdisciplinary approaches
that focus on the application of innovative as well as existing
humanistic data mining and knowledge discovery and management
methodologies. Since humanistic data typically are dominated by semantic
heterogeneity and are quite dynamic in nature, computer science
researchers are obliged and encouraged to develop new suitable
algorithms, tools and applications to efficiently tackle them, whereas
existing ones need to be adapted to the individual special
characteristics using traditional methodologies, such as decision rules,
decision trees, association rules, ontologies and alignments,
clustering, filtering, learning, classifier systems, neural networks,
support vector machines, preprocessing, post processing, feature
selection and visualization techniques. The Special Issue is devoted to
the exploitation of the multiple facets of the above research fields and
will explore the current related state-of-the-a!
rt. Its topics of interest cover the scope of the MHDW workshop series
(https://conferences.cwa.gr/mhdw2018/). Extended versions of papers
presented at MHDW 2018 are sought, but this Call for Papers is also
fully open to all who want to contribute by submitting a relevant
research manuscript.
--------------
Aim and topics
--------------
Scientific areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
- humanistic sciences
- data mining
- knowledge discovery
- knowledge representation and management
- artificial intelligence
- information retrieval
- context
- social data analytics
-----------------

Subject: [AISWorld] CFPs: Digital Marketing and Innovation in Emerging
Markets: Challenges, Opportunities and Research Agenda
Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2018 20:26:45 +0100
From: Yogesh K. Dwivedi <ykdwivedi(a)gmail.com>
To: aisworld <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
The 2nd International Conference on Advances in Theory and Practice of
Digital Marketing
*Digital Marketing and Innovation in Emerging Markets: Challenges,
Opportunities and Research Agenda *
*14-15 April 2019*
*Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) *
*Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India*
Rapid emergence and widespread adoption of information and communication
technologies (ICTs) and digital media is having a significant impact on the
way people communicate and fulfil their socio-economic, emotional and
material needs. ICTs and digital media, such as emails, search engines,
websites and social media sites, are already being used widely by
individuals for a range of activities including searching daily news and
updates on critical events; connecting with family and friends; reviewing
products, services and places; selling and buying goods; accessing
transportation, tourism, and personal financial services; and workplace
management (Kapoor et al. 2017). Furthermore, radical increase in both
temporal and geographical reach is empowering consumers to exert influence
on brands, products, and services (Plume et al., 2016). These technologies
are also being harnessed by businesses for various purposes including
distribution and selling of goods, retailing of consumer services, customer
relationship management, and influencing consumer behaviour by employing
digital marketing practices (AlAlwan et al. 2017; Aswani et al., 2018;
Dwivedi et al. 2015, 2017; Ismagilova et al. 2017; Kapoor et al. 2016,
