AIS SIGPRAG Pre-ICIS 6th workshop on
”Practice-based Design and Innovation of Digital Artifacts”
December 12, 2018, San Francisco
Workshop focus
This AIS SIGPRAG Pre-ICIS workshop has a general orientation towards
pragmatic perspectives on IS. The focus is on “Practice-based Design and
Innovation of Digital Artifacts”. This means an emphasis on digital
artifacts as embedded in social practices and carriers of elements in
such practices. It emphasizes also the innovative nature of designing
new artifacts and new practices. The workshop acknowledges different
sub-themes within this broad workshop theme:
* Ways to research practice-based design and innovation of digital artifacts
* Ways to conceptualize and describe practices
* Ways to conceptualize and describe digital artifacts
* The processes of innovation and design of digital artifacts and practices
Topics within these sub-themes are described below.
Workshop purpose
This workshop is arranged in the same spirit and a continuation of
earlier successful SIGPRAG workshops on “Practice-based Design and
Innovation of Digital Artifacts”. This SIGPRAG workshop intends to bring
scholars and practitioners together for a knowledge exchange and
development on research foundations and practical contributions
concerning the design and innovation of digital artifacts and practices.
The SIGPRAG workshop is intended to be a developmental arena with
thoughtful and constructive feedback from reviews and comments on site.
The workshop should be a place where you can present ideas in papers and
get fruitful feedback for further development of the papers. A
developmental arena means also taking responsibility for pushing
contributions further to high-quality journal publications. From earlier
SIGPRAG workshops many papers have been pushed further into special
issues in the open access journal Systems, Signs & Actions. At least one
issue will be arranged in Systems, Signs & Actions inviting promising
papers from this SIGPRAG workshop.

Pragmatist Information Systems Research
There have been many calls in the information systems (IS) community for
a stronger pragmatic focus. This can be seen in a growing interest for
research approaches and methods in IS that emphasize contribution to
practice and collaboration between the practice and academia. Action
research, which aims for knowledge development through collaboration and
intervention in real settings, is achieving more and more academic
credibility (Baskerville & Myers, 2004; Davison et al, 2004). This can
also be said about design science research that aims for the generation
of new and useful artifacts (Hevner et al, 2004; Gregor & Jones, 2007).
Research through evaluation has had a long and venerable place in IS
research (Ward et, 1996; Serafeimidis & Smithson, 2003). Several
approaches and frameworks that combine or integrate elements from the
above-mentioned approaches have also emerged, e.g. practice research
(Goldkuhl, 2011), collaborative practice research (Mathiassen, 2002),
practical science (Gregor, 2008), engaged scholarship (Mathiassen &
Nielsen, 2008), action design research (Sein et al, 2011) and technical
action research (Wieringa & Morali, 2012). Underlying these different
approaches is a quest for practical relevance of the conducted research
(Benbasat & Zmud, 1999; Van de Ven, 2007; Wieringa, 2010). It is not
enough to only “mirror” the world through descriptions and explanations
but a pragmatic orientation recognizes intervention and design as a way
of knowing and a means for building knowledge about social and
institutional phenomena (Aakhus, 2007). There is a need for knowledge of
other epistemic kinds that contributes more clearly to the improvement
of IS practices.
A pragmatic orientation can also be seen in the increasing interest in
the conceptualization of practices, activities, agency and actions.
Practice theorizing has gained an increased attention in IS studies
(Orlikowski, 2008; Leonardi, 2011). There has been an interest for
agency and action oriented theories in IS for quite some time; e.g.
activity theory (Nardi, 1996), structuration theory (Orlikowski, 1992),
social action theorizing (Hirschheim et al, 1996), human agency
theorizing (Boudreau & Robey, 2005), language action perspective
(Winograd & Flores, 1986) and work systems theory (Alter, 2013). From
this follows also an interest for social and pragmatic views of the IT
artifact (Aakhus & Jackson, 2005). This includes views of the IT
artifact as contextually embedded and carriers of those social contexts
(Orlikowski & Iacono, 2001) and such artifacts being tools for action
and communication (Ågerfalk, 2003; Markus & Silver, 2008). Design
research practice and the contributions to practice through
appropriation of knowledge and methods and the contributions to academia
through knowledge artifacts has been discussed (Sjöström, Donnellan &
Helfert, 2012).
This enhanced practice and action orientation follows a growing
awareness within IS scholars towards pragmatism as a research foundation
(e.g. Goles & Hirschheim, 2000; Ågerfalk, 2010; Goldkuhl, 2012). It is
not the case that IS scholars suddenly become pragmatists in their
research orientation. It is rather the case that there is move from an
implicit pragmatism to an explicit one (Goldkuhl, 2012). For a long time
IS scholars have addressed practical problems with an interest for
improvement. That interest has led to the extensive development of
methods, models and constructive frameworks for not only the design of
IT artifacts, but also related to several other IS/IT phenomena like
e.g. innovation management, business process management, project
management, IT service management just to mention a few. These methods
actually reveal an on-going search for knowledge of other epistemic
kinds for advancing understanding of information technology, information
systems, and practice. Pragmatism – and its inherent view of inquiry as
a theory of knowledge (Dewey, 1938) – is a philosophical foundation for
intervention-based research (Baskerville & Myers, 2004; Sjöström, 2010).
Indeed, Constantinides et al (2012, p. 1) propose “practical questions
for all IS researchers to consider in making choices about relevant
topics, design and execution, and representation of findings in their
research.” The pragmatist foundations are also reflected in the evolving
design science research discourse (Hevner et al, 2004; Sein et al, 2011;
Gregor & Hevner, 2013; Iivari, 2014; Venable et al, 2016).

Subject: [AISWorld] CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS "Blockchain and Distributed
Ledger Technology Use Cases: Applications and Lessons Learned"
Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2018 12:25:39 +0000
From: Horst Treiblmaier <Horst.Treiblmaier(a)modul.ac.at>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
*** CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS ***
Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology Use Cases: Applications and
Lessons Learned
(published by Springer)
Within a short couple of years, Blockchain and other trustless systems
have turned from being relatively obscure technologies, which were only
known to a small community of computer scientists and cryptologists,
into mainstream phenomena that are seen as powerful game changers for
many industries. Given the manifold potential applications of Blockchain
to substitute or remove intermediaries, it does not come as a surprise
that the expectations from industry are high or even exaggerated.
Simultaneously, various applied academic communities have taken up the
subject and actively research either the technology or its implications.
Given that the dust of the initial hype has settled, it is now time to
explore how sustainable value can be created with the use of Blockchain
and related technologies implementing, exploring and evaluating real use
cases.
For this call for papers, we therefore invite chapters that describe the
application of Blockchain and related technologies in real-world use
cases. We will publish papers that clearly outline how those
technologies have been applied, what the rationale for their application
was and, finally, what the outcome was. It is the goal of this book to
provide a broad collection of applications, experiences and lessons
learned pertaining to a wide variety of industries and application
areas, including, but not limited to, financial markets, energy,
tourism, SCM, IoT, law and compliance.
*** Structure ***
We are looking for chapters that thoroughly discuss use cases of
Blockchain and related technologies. Each chapter needs to clearly
specify how the technology was applied and what exactly the outcome was.
Ideally, the authors comment on how those technologies helped to improve
performance in comparison to traditional systems. A critical position
should be taken and the advantages and disadvantages of Blockchain use
should be discussed. We highly appreciated the discussion of failures as
long as the case is well-documented. More specifically, the requirements
for acceptance are:
• Case study is relevant to the book’s theme
• Objectives are clear and well-described
• Chapter will draw an audience
• Chapter is well organized and flows logically
• Methodology is appropriate
• Evidence supports authors’ arguments
*** Formatting ***
All final submissions must have 6,000-9,000 words and follow the
template provided by the publisher. The references must be formatted
following APA style. Submissions that do not use this template or
deviate from the formatting requirements will be rejected without review.
*** Important Dates ***
• Submission of an Extended Abstract (~ 1,000 words): before October 31,
2018
• Submission of the Chapter: before May 31, 2019
*** Procedure ***
Interested authors can learn more, or submit a paper, by contacting the
editors directly.
The Cfp together with templates for MS Word and LaTeX can be found at:

Journal of Information Systems
(http://iris.cs.aau.dk/index.php/welcome.html). The Scandinavian Journal
of Information Systems (SJIS) is the journal of the IRIS Association,
which is the Scandinavian chapter of the Association for Information
Systems (AIS). SJIS is recognized as level A in the ABDC journal ranking
list.
Special Issue Guest Editors:
Ahmed Elragal, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.
Moutaz Haddara, Kristiania University College, Norway and TIAS Business
School for Business & Society, Netherlands.
Eli Hustad, University of Agder, Norway.
Important Dates:
Submission deadline: December 31st, 2018
Guest editors’ constructive rejection: February 1st, 2019
First review completed: March 1st, 2019
Revised manuscript due: May 15th, 2019
Second review completed: June 30th, 2019
Revised manuscript due: August 31, 2019
Publication date: December 2019
Submission Guidelines
Article submissions for this special issue should follow the submission
format and guidelines of the Scandinavian Journal of Information
Systems. All papers will be peer-reviewed based on the journal’s review
procedures. Authors must indicate in the cover letter that the paper is
aimed for the Rejuvenating Enterprise Systems special issue to ensure
that the submission will be handled by the right editors.
Review Strategy
A constructive rejection approach will be applied prior to the review
process. All submissions will be initially screened by all guest editors
as soon as the submission deadline passes. The authors whose articles
fail to meet the journal’s standards or specific requirements will be
notified soon after the submission deadline. The papers that pass the
initial screening and that may be accepted for publication subject to
certain conditions, will undergo a rigorous review process according to
the publication plan. Authors of articles that are expected to be
accepted, will be offered an opportunity to revise and resubmit their
papers within a specified period. At least two independent reviewers
shall review the submitted manuscripts based on their originality,
quality, and relevance to this special issue’s theme.
Idea in Brief
In this special issue, the guest editors seek a diverse collection of
articles that address the future of enterprise systems.
Enterprise systems have existed for decades, and the majority of large
organizations worldwide have implemented their enterprise systems
(Gattiker & Goodhue, 2005). However, fluctuating levels of success have
been reported over the years (Hustad & Olsen, 2014; Svejvig & Jensen,
2013). Companies of all sizes have become increasingly dependent on
enterprise systems to integrate their various business functions, manage
their operational and routine transactions, comply with regulations,
manage their global supply chains, and benefit from the systems’ timely
reporting capabilities (Haddara & Zach, 2011). Generally, enterprise
systems’ implementations are resource intensive and require considerable
financial investments. Their adoptions also result in widespread
organizational changes (Volkoff, Strong, & Elmes, 2007). Despite
enterprise systems’ demanding and risky implementation efforts, their
substantial business value is recognized (Tian & Xu, 2015).
The ex post literature is rich and diverse; however, an apparent gap in
enterprise systems’ future relates to emerging technologies (Elragal &
Haddara, 2012). Thus, there is a need to investigate how emerging
technologies can shape the future of such systems.
Currently, the characteristics of enterprise systems have radically
changed. Businesses require agility and flexibility. Therefore, among
others, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems should respond to
such dynamic needs of today’s businesses. New sourcing models for
enterprise systems have recently been offered, and cloud sourcing has
become a popular approach for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
in particular (El-Gazzar, Hustad, & Olsen, 2016). Moreover, new
applications have been integrated with enterprise systems, forming the
so-called hybrid systems. Such a hybrid system also incorporates systems
from multiple vendors, as well as integrates data from on-premises with
those on the cloud (Loebbecke, Thomas, & Ullrich, 2012). Enterprises
also seek to utilize enterprise systems in more intelligent ways by
analyzing their transaction data to support decision making on both
strategic and tactical levels. Future enterprise systems are expected to
support digital transformation to a greater extent.
We strongly believe that five areas are reshaping the future of
enterprise systems. Therefore, such systems need rejuvenation to sustain
their well-established presence in organizations.
These areas are as follows:
Area 1. Cloud computing
Area 2. Gamification
Area 3. Blockchain technology
Area 4. Big data analytics
Area 5. Digitalization
Call for Contributions
In this special issue, we seek to attract researchers’ works that
present novel approaches to inquiries into technical, operational,
economic, and social impacts of emerging technologies with regard to
their connection to and impact on enterprise systems. The special issue
is open to all types of research methodologies and especially encourages
a diversity of theoretical and empirical approaches.
Basically, we are looking for theoretically well-defined research
problems that are relevant to the topics intertwined in this special
issue, with the objective to advance theories and methods or open the
door for future knowledge to unfold. Accordingly, we differentiate
between informative, theoretical and practical research problems,
welcoming both scholarly pieces and studies with concrete applications.
As a result, we expect the papers to demonstrate academic value and
illustrate how the research contributes to businesses and society in
general.
For more information about the special issue and the topics’ details,
please visit
http://iris.cs.aau.dk/index.php/special-issue-call-for-papers.html
Looking forward for your research!
Regards,
Moutaz

21th International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative
Languages (PADL 2019)
https://popl19.sigplan.org/track/PADL-2019
Lisbon, Portugal. 14 -15 January 2019.
Co-located with ACM POPL 2019 (https://popl19.sigplan.org/home)
Declarative languages build on sound theoretical bases to provide
attractive frameworks for application development. These languages have
been successfully applied to many different real-world situations,
ranging from data base management to active networks to software
engineering to decision support systems.
New developments in theory and implementation have opened up new
application areas. At the same time, applications of declarative
languages to novel problems raise numerous interesting research issues.
Well-known questions include designing for scalability, language
extensions for application deployment, and programming environments.
Thus, applications drive the progress in the theory and implementation
of declarative systems, and benefit from this progress as well.
PADL is a well-established forum for researchers and practitioners to
present original work emphasising novel applications and implementation
techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, including, functional,
logic, constraints, etc. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Innovative applications of declarative languages
* Declarative domain-specific languages and applications
* Practical applications of theoretical results
* New language developments and their impact on applications
* Declarative languages and software engineering
* Evaluation of implementation techniques on practical applications
* Practical experiences and industrial applications
* Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom
* Practical extensions such as constraint-based, probabilistic, and
reactive languages.
PADL 2019 welcomes new ideas and approaches pertaining to applications
and implementation of * declarative languages, and is not limited to the
scope of the past PADL symposia. It will be co-located with the
Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL 2019), in Lisbon,
Portugal.
Important Dates and Submission Guidelines
——————————————————
Abstracts due: 21 September
Papers due: 28 September
Notification to authors: 26 October
Authors should submit an electronic copy of the full paper in PDF using
the Springer LNCS format. The submission will be done through EasyChair
conference system:https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=padl2019
All submissions must be original work written in English. Submissions
must be unpublished and not submitted for publication elsewhere. Work
that already appeared in unpublished or informally published workshops
proceedings may be submitted but the authors should notify the program
chair about the place on which it has previously appeared.
PADL 2019 will accept both technical and application papers:
Technical papers must describe original, previously unpublished research
results. Technical papers must not exceed 15 pages (plus one page of
references) in Springer LNCS format.
Application papers are a mechanism to present important practical
applications of declarative languages that occur in industry or in areas
of research other than Computer Science. Application papers are expected
to describe complex and/or real-world applications that rely on an
innovative use of declarative languages. Application descriptions,
engineering solutions and real-world experiences (both positive and
negative) are solicited. The limit for application papers is 8 pages in
Springer LNCS format but such papers can also point to sites with
supplemental information about the application or the system that they
describe.
The proceedings of PADL 2019 will appear in the LNCS series of Springer
Verlag:
https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs
Journal Publication for Best Papers
——————————————————
The best papers (as selected by the PC chairs) will be invited to submit
a longer version for journal publication after the symposium. For papers
related to logic programming, in the journal Theory and Practice of
Logic Programming (TPLP), and for papers related to functional
programming, in Journal of Functional Programming (JFP).
The authors of these papers will be invited to submit a journal version
containing at least 30% new material. This will be reviewed by the PC
and/or the respective journal editors for a swifter reviewing process of
the journal version.
Such extensions could be explanations for which there was no space,
illuminating examples and proofs, additional definitions and theorems,
further experimental results, implementational details and feedback from
practical/engineering use, extended discussion of related work and such
like.
