Dear Colleagues:
We cordially invite you to share your latest research results at the
2018 IoTBDS Conference.
---------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------------------
The internet of things (IoT) is a platform that allows a network of
devices (sensors, smart meters, etc.) to communicate, analyse data and
process information collaboratively in the service of individuals or
organisations. The IoT network can generate large amounts of data in a
variety of formats and using different protocols which can be stored and
processed in the cloud. The conference looks to address the issues
surrounding IoT devices, their interconnectedness and services they may
offer, including efficient, effective and secure analysis of the data
IoT produces using machine learning and other advanced techniques,
models and tools, and issues of security, privacy and trust that will
emerge as IoT technologies mature and become part of our everyday lives.
Big Data (BD) has core values of volume, velocity, variety and veracity.
After collecting much data from IoT, BD can be jointly used with machine
learning, AI, statistical and other advanced techniques, models and
methods, which can create values for people and organizations adopting
it, since forecasting, deep analysis and analytics can help identify
weaknesses and make improvements based on different analysis.
Maintaining a high level of security and privacy for data in IoT are
crucial and we welcome recommendations, solutions, demonstrations and
best practices for all forms of security and privacy for IoT and BD.

Subject: [AISWorld] Call for Papers for the 2nd Weizenbaum Conference
“Challenges of Digital Inequality”
Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2018 09:50:40 +0100
From: Hanna Krasnova <krasnova(a)uni-potsdam.de>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
*Call for Papers for the 2nd Weizenbaum Conference *
*Challenges of Digital Inequality: Digital Education | Digital Work |
Digital Life*
*weizenbaum-conference.org <http://weizenbaum-conference.org/>*
*The Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society is organising a
conference on Thursday, 16 May and Friday, 17 May 2019 on the subject of
“Challenges of Digital Inequality: Digital Education, Digital Work, Digital
Life” and invites you to submit short and regular papers for presentation
at the conference. **The aim of the conference is to bring together
different disciplinary perspectives (e.g. education and social sciences,
legal studies, communication science, computer science, economics science
and engineering science) to highlight the challenges, drivers and
consequences of inequality in the age of digitalisation. **In this
context, we strive to identify viable solutions to ensure the creation of a
self-determined society.*
Digitalisation transforms the society we live in today: It changes the way
we communicate, learn, work, and live. Digital technologies provide access
to information anytime and anywhere and promise to empower users around the
world by delivering more and easier opportunities for transparency and
social participation. Despite this potential, modern societies are
increasingly witnessing a gaping chasm of inequality as social actors
experience differential results of ubiquitous digitalisation around the
world. Understanding and finding ways to solve this paradox is a primary
motivation for the Weizenbaum Conference 2019.
For example, the question of whether the digital transformation of
education reduces or exacerbates inequalities remains open. Indeed, while
popular online learning platforms allow global access to educational
materials for anyone, their use is highly dependent on appropriate Internet
access and a certain level of Internet skills. Furthermore, many existing
online learning platforms are designed for specific cultural contexts and
frequently fail to account for users with special needs. As a result,
existing inequalities might be further solidified instead of mitigated. For
instance, many refugees struggle with a stable Internet connection upon
their arrival to a host country which slows down their progress of learning
the language and impedes social inclusion. In the context of school
education, available equipment, Internet access, the curriculum, teaching
methods as well as teachers’ competencies could be contributing factors for
inequality. While demands for more inclusive ways of education have reached
schools, practice reveals pressing challenges that need to be overcome. In
this context, digital tools may offer solutions, but can also build
barriers.
The world of research is also not immune to inequality struggles.
Digitalisation is a prerequisite when it comes to research collaboration,
as well as the production and presentation of research findings.
Nonetheless, access to research output varies from institution to
institution, as does the researchers’ ability to publish in the open access
format. To address these issues, open access and open research data are
currently on everyone’s lips, with other aspects of open science, such as
citizen science, also on the rise.
As labour markets are witnessing tremendous digital transformation, more
and more workers choose to leverage digital tools to engage in the new
“platform economy”, promising more autonomy and flexibility. These
developments are challenging traditional approaches to the welfare state as
well as open new gateways for discrimination, which calls for new
approaches to address these developments. Furthermore, as companies
actively embrace digital solutions and automation, demands for new digital
skill sets and qualifications are pressing. Large enterprises have already
focused their strategies on developing new competencies in their workforce.
However, small and medium-sized enterprises are still in the orientation
phase and are often lost when it comes to developing digital skill
strategies for their employees.
On the individual level, digitalisation is blurring the boundaries between
personal life and work, dividing workers between those who can and those
who cannot accommodate to the new realities of constant availability.
Furthermore, usage patterns, contextual and personality characteristics all
contribute to the outcomes users obtain online. For example, while active
participation on social media has been linked to beneficial outcomes such
as social connectedness, social capital, and gains in social support,
passive use of these technologies has been associated with negative
outcomes like decreased life satisfaction and negative affectivity.
Untangling these complexities is a critical research challenge to ensure
beneficial uses of emerging technologies for all.
Finally, with the growing popularity of automated algorithmic
decision-making, there are concerns that existing inequalities are
solidified as a result of data-driven decisions and inherent biases. Many
life-changing decisions like whether to keep someone in preventive
detention are already relying on automated algorithms. Existing
inequalities can be aggravated for example if biased data is used as the
ground truth to train algorithms. At the same time, a lack of transparency
impedes the detection of inbuilt moral assumptions, biases, and priorities
underlying the algorithm. Hence, it is very difficult or even impossible
for systematically disfavoured groups or individuals to question decisions
and demand fair re-evaluation.
Taking the lens of digital inequality, this conference seeks contributions
that help to steer self-determined digital transformation in digital
education, digital work, and digital life. In line with the mission of the
Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, we set to explore
possibilities to shape digital change in a meaningful way.
We invite *short papers of 2 pages *and *regular papers of 7 pages*.
Conference updates will continuously be posted on the Conference website:
https://weizenbaum-conference.org

=== CALL FOR PAPERS ===
European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2019)
Track "Knowledge Management & Artificial Intelligence"
June 8-14, 2019, Stockholm, Sweden (http://ecis2019.eu/)
Deadline for paper submissions: November 27th, 2018
=== TRACK DESCRIPTION ===
Full version:
http://ecis2019.eu/programme/research-tracks/knowledge-managament-and-ai/kn…
Knowledge management (KM) scholars have emphasized the importance of
(big) data, information, and knowledge assets for decision support,
management, and leadership, thereby clearly indicating the relation
between human beings and technology. However, various powerful digital
technologies have led to substantial changes in knowledge sharing
practices. In this regard, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is
of special importance and creates new opportunities on the interface
between KM & AI.
This track raises the questions whether and how digitization in general
and AI in particular change the socio-technical aspects related to
knowledge sharing. With respect to the increasing influence of digital
technologies, AI, machine learning and the importance of KM for
organizations' daily business, we believe that this research topic has
the potential for valuable contributions to both theory and practice. In
addition, with respect to AI, the question is how AI approaches can
support knowledge creation and especially help to externalize implicit
knowledge. Further, AI seems promising in context detection and, thus,
in the delivery of suitable training artefacts and in connecting people.
Main goal of the track is to gather current research with an emphasis on
KM & AI as an integral part of a changing business and social
environment focusing on emerging trends such as sharing society and
economy. KM has become an interdisciplinary research field - the
traditional gap between researcher from a technology-oriented versus a
human-oriented angle has been bridged by holistic, socio-technical
approaches. We currently see strong developments towards research on AI,
changing digital tools (such as the use of social software or machine
learning for business and private purposes) as well as towards entire
digital business models (such as multi-sided online platforms or
networks and online communities) fostering knowledge sharing across
organizations.
What needs to be addressed additionally are developments complementary
to digitization and AI, for instance geographical dispersion, knowledge
sharing across time zones, or national/cultural influence factors. Due
to the usage of AI in collaborative technologies such as social
software, organizational and national boundaries become more blurred and
knowledge can be diffused much easier. Openness and inter-organizational
collaboration build the digital pathway of rich, contextualized and
sustainable knowledge sharing activities among networked persons within
and beyond organizational boundaries. Besides benefits of the increased
sharing also risks of losing competitive advantage arise. Hence,
organizations should carefully balance their activities to promote and
control knowledge sharing, to protect their competitive knowledge.
Obviously, such developments have to be assessed carefully. One might
think of negative outcomes such as a limited work-life balance or
unwanted knowledge spill-overs. Furthermore, applying AI in the context
of KM raises also questions about ownership of knowledge, control about
data and ethical issues. All this takes place in digital environments
and leads to enormous changes of KM-related socio-technical aspects
which are rather under-researched, so far.
This track aims to promote multi-disciplinary contributions dealing with
a managerial, an economic, a methodological, a cultural or a
socio-technical perspective. Submissions based on theoretical research,
design research, action research, or behavioral research are encouraged.
We welcome both full research papers and research-in-progress papers.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Application of AI in KM (e.g. blockchain)
* AI for knowledge creation (e.g. deep learning)
* KM in a sharing society
* Balancing knowledge sharing and knowledge protection for
inter-organizational collaboration
* From technology-oriented towards human-oriented KM in digital environments
* Social and behavioral issues in the context of KM and AI
* KM and technology enhanced learning
* AI for technology-mediated social collaboration
* Knowledge life cycle and data-driven decision support
* Cross-organizational, cross-border and cross-cultural KM enabled by AI
* AI to capture and share knowledge in social networks and distributed
contexts
* Support for mature KM solutions: KM governance, KM strategies, KM
maturity models, and KM performance
* KM and risk management
* KM for digital competency development

=== CALL FOR PAPERS ===
European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2019)
Track "*Knowledge Management & Artificial Intelligence*"
June 8-14, 2019, Stockholm, Sweden (http://ecis2019.eu/)
Deadline for paper submissions: November 27th, 2018
=== TRACK DESCRIPTION ===
With respect to the increasing influence of digital
technologies, AI, machine learning and the importance of KM for
organizations’ daily business, we believe that this research topic has
the potential for valuable contributions to both theory and practice. In
addition, with respect to AI, the question is how AI approaches can
support knowledge creation and especially help to externalize implicit
knowledge. Further, AI seems promising in context detection and, thus,
in the delivery of suitable training artefacts and in connecting people.
Main goal of the track is to gather current research with an emphasis on
KM & AI as an integral part of a changing business and social
environment focusing on emerging trends such as sharing society and
economy. KM has become an interdisciplinary research field – the
traditional gap between researcher from a technology-oriented versus a
human-oriented angle has been bridged by holistic, socio-technical

**CALL FOR PAPERS** IEEE RCIS 2019
Hosted by KU Leuven in Brussel, Belgium, May 29-31, 2019 Research
Challenges in Information Sciences
FOR FULL CFP, PLEASE VISIT http://www.rcis-conf.com
DESCRIPTION
The goal of RCIS is to bring together scientists, researchers, engineers
and practitioners from a wide range of information science fields and
provide opportunities for knowledge sharing and dissemination. RCIS has
become a recognised conference on research challenges in information
sciences. Organised for the 13th time in a row, RCIS 2019 will be held
from May 29-31, 2019, in Brussels, Belgium, Capital of Europe.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
At RCIS 2019, among other regular topics, special attention will be
given to the special topic: "Towards a Design Science for Information
Systems". With the advent of ubiquitous computing, today's information
systems are designed, developed, used, and tested on a very wide
spectrum of devices and computing platforms, by a diverse population of
stakeholders (e.g., analysts, designers, developers, end users) for an
ever wider range of tasks carried out in multiple physical and
psychological environments, thus inducing many different contexts of
use. Facing this variety of contexts of use, design science is expected
to help people producing information systems that are better tailored to
their needs when interacting with these systems. This year's RCIS theme
aims to explore the role played by design science in every stage of the
development life cycle of information systems, which includes
meta-models, models, languages, notations, methods, and software tools
for supporting these stages. RCIS welcomes submissions from a diverse
spectrum of information science. The list of themes and topics includes,
but is not limited to, the areas that can be found here
