SOCIAL EVENTS
VIRGIN MARY, ARTEMIS & ST JOHN TOUR
*The HOUSE of VIRGIN MARY*
Located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the
shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green.
It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may
have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years
in the area to spread Christianity. Mary preferred this remote place
rather than living in crowded place. The house is a typical Roman
architectural example, entirely made of stones. In the 4th century AD, a
church, combining her house and grave, has been built. The original
two-stored house, which consisted of an anteroom (where today candles
are proposed), bedroom and praying room (Christian church area) and a
room with fireplace (chapel for Muslims). A front kitchen fell into
ruins and has been restored in 1940's. Today, only the central part and
a room on the right of the altar are open to visitors. From there one
can understand that this building looks more like a church than a house.
Another interesting place is the "Water of Mary", a source to be found
at the exit of the church area and where a rather salt water, with
curative properties, can be drunk by all. Paul VI was the first pope to
visit this place in the 1960's. Later, in the 1980's, during his visit,
Pope John-Paul II declared the Shrine of Virgin Mary has a pilgrimage
place for Christians. It is also visited by Muslims who recognize Mary
as the mother of one of their prophets. Every year, on August 15th a
ceremony is organized to commemorate Mary's Assumption.
THE HOUSE OF VIRGIN MARY TOUR
*THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS*
The temple of Artemision is known as one of theSeven Wonders of the
Antic world. It has been built in the areas of Ephesus on a flat area
which has over the centuries turned into a swamp. Today one can only see
the ruins of the foundations of this marvelous construction of the
Hellenistic Age, entirely made of marble and full of sculptured columns'
capitals and shafts. The most beautiful remaining of this temple are
today exhibited in the London British Museum. The oldest remaining found
date back till the VIth century BC. It was surrounded by 36 huge
columns, later enlarged upon the orders of the Lydian King, Kreisos,
during the VIth century BC. Most of the exhibits in the London British
Museum belong to this period. The new Artemision has been rebuilt in the
IInd century BC. Located on top of the previous one, it had tremendous
dimensions: 127 columns of each 17,5 meters high. Unfortunately this one
has also been destroyed by fire, reconstructed and again demolished by
earthquakes, rebuilt and at last looted by Goths one year later. The
statue of many-breasted Artemision was the symbol of the temple but also
of abundance, hunting and wild life. The genuine statue of Artemision,
removed during the fire, is today exhibited in theSelcuk Museum. Many
copies of this statue found during the latest excavations date back from
the Roman period.
THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS TOUR
*The BASILICA of ST JOHN*
It is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in
the region around Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug
Hill. Three hundred years after the death of Saint Paul, a small chapel
was constructed over the grave in the 4th century. The church was
changed into a marvelous basilica during the region of Emperor Justinian
(527 -565 AD). The monumental basilica was in the shape of a cross and
was covered with six domes. Its construction, being of stone and brick,
is an extremely rare find amongst the architecture of its time. Raised
by two steps and covered with marble, the tomb of St John was under the
central dome, that was once carried by the four columns at the corners.
The columns in the courtyard reveals the monograms of Emperor Justinian
and his wife Theodora. Constructed in the 5th century AD, the baptistery
is north of the nave, with its key hole shape. Rampart walls around the
church were constructed for protection from the Arabian attracts in the
7th - 8th centuries AD. The impressive 10th century AD frescoes
representing St John, Jesus and a Saint, ornament the chapel. With the
invasion of Turks, the chapel was used as a mosque in the 14th century;
unfortunately Basilica of Saint John became unusable due to the serious
earthquake in the same century. The excavations around the Basilica of
Saint John has been continuing under the supervision of Ekrem Akurgal
since 1973, with the financial supports of George B. Quatman.

EPHESUS TOUR
This enclosure for archaeological remains at Ephesus elegantly
reconciles historic conservation with accessibility for visitors. The
site of a succession of great ancient civilizations, Ephesus, on the
south-west coast of modern Turkey, embodied a peculiarly fertile
synthesis of architecture and culture. In 356BC the Greeks built the
Artemesium (a colossal Ionic temple dedicated to Artemis the fertility
goddess) which was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. During
the 2nd century BC, Ephesus was the fourth largest city in the eastern
Roman Empire, famous for its Artemesium, the Library of Celsus and its
medical school.

ISA BEY MOSQUE & SIRINCE VILLAGE TOUR
*ISA BEY MOSQUE*
Isa Bey Mosque is one of the most delicate examples of Seljukian
architecture, situated below the basilica of Saint John. The mosque was
built by the master Syrian architecture Ali son of Mushimish al
-Damishki, between the years of 1374 and 1375.
The mosque was styled asymmetrically unlike the traditional style, The
location of the windows, doors and domes were not matched, purposely. In
the entrance of the mosque, an inscription from the god decorates the
doorway. The columns inside the house of prayer are from earlier ruins
in Ephesus, making an interesting contrast to the mosque. The domes are
ornamented by turquoise and blue faience, revealing the characteristic
of Ottoman style. Crown-like doors from Seljukian architectural style
later combine with the specific decoration elements of architectural
style. The mosque was repaired in 1934. The mystical atmosphere of "Isa
Bey Mosque" must be experienced in the excursion around this region.
ISA BEY MOSQUE
*SIRINCE VILLAGE*
This pretty old Orthodox village, 12 km away from Ephesus and 30 km from
Kusadasi, was once Cirkince ("ugly"). Indeed, its habitants gave this
name on purpose as they did not want to be bothered by foreigners nor to
share the beauty of their village. Still after years, visitors
understood that the village was not ugly at all and called it Sirince
("pretty"). As the village is located on the top of a mountain, anyone
will enjoy the impressive wine yards' and peach trees' views on his way.
Today the village is a perfect synthesis of Turk-Greek culture as of the
1920's: after the Independence War, people exchange between Greek and
Turks has occurred and all those typical Greek houses, though they kept
their original outside characteristics, have received the local layout
inside. The most beautiful specimens are open to visitors. And even in
the courtyard of one of them, one will discover a nicely restorated
Orthodox church. All the narrow streets of the village belong to the
women, selling handcrafts of all kinds, olive oil. Another attraction of
Sirince is its wine: try its taste in small cafs or in the former
municipal school restorated. Though Sirince is developing its tourism
very quickly, it has been able to preserve its authenticity and the
meaning of its name.

Hi,
The Australasian Journal of Information Systems has just published its latest article.
Pham, H., Pham, D., Brennan, L., & Richardson, J. (2017). Information Security and People: A Conundrum for Compliance. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.3127/ajis.v21i0.1321
Abstract
This evaluation of end-users and IT experts/managers' attitudes towards performing IT security tasks indicates important differences between their perspectives on what is and is not necessary to establish a secure corporate IT environment. Through a series of case studies, this research illustrates that making it easier for end-users to comply does not necessarily equate to enhanced implementation of security measures. End-users want to be autonomous, competent, self-motivated and active participants in the development of secure environments. However, managers and experts want to limit autonomy to ensure that procedures are followed closely, rather than permitting flexibility. This results in the creation of environments that are intrinsically de-motivating rather than motivating end-users to become self-determined and self-regulating co-creators of a secure IT environment. The paper also discusses alternative approaches to developing a human system that works for end-users and experts.
Keywords: security compliance; security management; end user security behaviour

===========================================
*Overview*
-----------------------------------------------------------
Our interactive experience with the built environments, at home, at
work, and even in public urban spaces is rapidly evolving. This is
attributed to advancements in sensing and actuation systems that can
integrate into the building infrastructures, coupled with the new
environmental concerns that call for new life, work, and mobility
styles. This change, whether gradual or sudden, evident or seamless, can
have a signicant inuence on our everyday experiences, and thus entails
eorts to envision possible scenarios and plan for them.
We believe that future buildings, as they would embody our digital and
physical interactive daily experiences, should be designed and nurtured
in a dialogue with their users, both at the individual as well as social
levels. This concern has become of central importance in the newly
emerging research domain of Human-Building Interaction (HBI), which
seeks to provide a user-centred lens to addresses the physical, spatial,
and social design opportunities and challenges that emerge as our built
environments become immersively interactive.
In this special issue we aim to bring together contributions from the
elds of human-computer interaction, building and urban architecture, and
social sciences; and provide a common platform for collaboratively
creating and sharing future 'images' of Human-Building Interaction in a
time frame of 10-20 years.
-----------------------------------------------------------
*Topics of Interest*
-----------------------------------------------------------
Three types of submission are invited:
• Conceptual contributions
envisioning the evolution of HBI (ideally in specific use situations
such as home, oce, school, urban public spaces, transportation vehicles,
etc.)
• Design and evaluation of technologies and physical artifacts
to enhance human interaction with, experience in buildings. This can
include topics such as home automation systems, comfort, spatial user
experience, robotic homw, etc.
• Data acquisition and user modeling
applied to HBI-related opportunities and challenges

2^nd Call for Papers
*/Computer Supported Cooperative Work: The Journal of Collaborative
Computing and Work Practices (JCSCW)/**
**Special Issue on Crowd Dynamics: Conflicts, Contradictions, and
Cooperation Issues in Crowdsourcing***
/Organizing Special Issue Editors/
Thomas Ludwig (University of Siegen), Karin Hansson (Stockholm
University), Tanja Aitamurto (Stanford University), Neha Gupta
(University of Nottingham)
/Deadline for Submissions/
March, 31 2017
Through this special issue we aim to make contributions towards
the emerging and intriguing subject of crowdsourcing and enrich
academia’s understanding of individual and collaborative aspects
of crowdsourcing.
-----------------------------------------------------
/Scope of the Special Issue/
Unfair reputation systems, slow payments, lack of transparency,
discrimination, misunderstandings and misinterpretations, lack of access
to decision-making or socio-spatial inequalities are only some of the
many reasons for conflicts in crowdsourcing. The divisive logic of the
system, its related tools and practices as well as the sharing processes
in the peer-community creates interesting dynamics and new foci on old
conflicts.
The development of new types of working relationships has previously
been problematized for several reasons. For example, Irani and Silberman
(2014) have questioned crowd-worker dynamics from a labor rights
perspective, leading to calls for collective action by crowd workers
(Salehi et al., 2015). Martin et al’s (2014, 2016) analysis of the
online discussion in the community of workers at the Mechanical Turk,
shows the tensions between the dividing logic of the system and the
information-sharing practices in the community. Gupta et al’s (2014)
study of Indian workers shows how lack of control over the work
environment affect participants work practices. Other common conflicts
are due to rejected work, slow or unfair payments, lack of transparency,
or technical problems (Six et al., 2010).
In the area of digital democracy, digital differentiation and
inequalities within the crowd becomes problematic (Hansson, 2014).
Studies of Amazon Mechanical Turk (Fort et al., 2011), Wikipedia
(Menking & Erikson, 2015; Ortega et al., 2008), Twitter (Duggan et al.,
2015) and crowdsourced policymaking (Aitamurto and Landemore, 2016)
indicate a lack of representativeness in terms of age, gender and
education. Cultural geographers have also pointed out the hegemonic
discourses and socio-spatial relations in the geographic web (Crampton
et al., 2013; Soden & Palen, 2014; Shelton, 2014). But crowdsourcing,
nowadays, also has an impact on physical “offline” activities, such as
conducting voluntary work in crisis management (Ludwig et al., 2015) or
making use of the large part of population to contribute to scientific
challenges via crowdsourcing, defined as Citizen Science (Irwin, 1995).
The physical circumstances and potential conflicts, such as endangering
voluntary crowd workers or citizen “scientists” also needs to be considered.
However, there is a need of studies of actual work practices in
crowd-work settings and a more empirical research on the conflicts and
dynamics within the more fluid work and interactive relations in crowd
work. There is also a lack of a more structured overview of typologies
of participation indicating levels of power and agency in the context of
crowd work and crowdsourcing at large. This special issue therefore
focuses on research exploring actual reasons, practices, power
relations, and dynamics of conflicts within crowdsourcing and crowd work.
/Sample Topics/
We invite participants from a diversity of disciplines and perspectives
to contribute with insights about types of crowdsourcing in practice, to
deepen our understanding of actual work practices and relations in
contexts such as crowd work, peer-production and citizen science.
Furthermore, we also aim to gather typologies of participation examining
and explaining power relations of crowd work. Possible topics include
(but are not limited to):
* /Transparency in Crowdsourcing:/Empirical studies, design case
studies or theoretical work about how to allow crowd workers to
understand, configure, personalize, and control applications
relating to crowdsourcing. What levels of transparency exist in the
implementation of crowdsourcing? What are the clashes of needs that
exist between crowd workers and sourcers? What types of conflicts of
expectations arise in crowd contexts? What is the role of
transparency in resolving or amplifying these conflicts?
* /Tools, processes, services and architectures for supporting the
management of conflicts, contradictions, or cooperation issues in
crowdsourcing contexts/: What are the tools, services and
architectural infrastructures for discovering or supporting the
actual work of and conflicts in crowdsourcing? What are the
characteristics of tools that support conflict management and/or
conflict resolution in crowdsourcing?
* /Social and organizational factors influencing conflicts,
contradictions, or cooperation issues: /Crowdsourcing deals highly
with social and organizational aspects. What are the social and
organizational aspects that foster conflicts in practice? How is
labor and capital distributed? How could social and organizational
aspects help overcome inequity and how does technology foster those
aspects? What are dynamics of inclusion/exclusion in crowdsourcing,
reflecting societal issues of race, gender, identity, and geography?
* /Tensions between “offline” and “online” activities: /Crowdsourcing
often has an impact on physical activities and vice versa. Therefore
the physical circumstances and potential conflicts need to be
considered. What problems exist while conducting physical crowd
work? What areas of tension exits? How could technology support
solving those conflicts?
* /Social computing approaches for crowdsourcing:/The emergence and
success of crowdsourcing practices may (not) rely on supporting peer
networks and on sharing results that allow pooling resources in user
communities. What are conflicts or contradictions between crowd
members and crowd workers? How does technology help addressing and
resolving those conflicts?
* /Research ethics in citizens’ science: /When relying on
crowdsourcing, crucial ethical questions arise: What kind of work
can be sourced to the crowd? What legal, moral and ethical
protections are missing or should be in place to support the crowd
and the sourcers? What are the ethical questions concerning
“child-based crowdsourcing” (e.g. creativity work)?
/Schedule/
* Submissions due: March, 31 2017
* Reviews due: May, 15 2017
