One cause of the failures of ICT4D projects is related to the shortcomings in field research. Field research primarily involves data collection, and often attempts to understand someone else's experience. The high failure rates of ICT4D projects call for fundamentally new ways to tackle the challenges experienced by researchers and practitioners when planning and conducting ICT4D field research in the developing and developed world. This minitrack invites researchers and practitioners to share and analyze their success stories, failures, mistakes, and advice, which would gather momentum for a global discussion on better managing ICT4D field research, furthering the larger goal of socioeconomic and human development of marginalized communities across the world. Suggested Topics The following topics suggested for the proposed minitrack will help the "ICTs in Global Development" track serve as a forum for research on the use and diffusion of ICTs and associated practices across the world. * Failure stories in ICT4D fieldwork: Reflection and analysis; What went wrong? Why? Implementing systems that seamlessly allow the flow of data as well as control beyond the boundaries of the home country is fraught with challenges. Technologies and implementation strategies used in the home country may not be readily transferable to overseas operations. Implementation of global systems may be impacted by various environmental variables such as local rules and regulations, tariffs and currency differences. Mainstream IS research on systems implementations have focused on many occasions on the single organization and single country implementations. Findings from such studies cannot be generalized to systems implementations where the country is just not a variable but provides the context of implementation. There are both challenges and opportunities to consider in global systems implementations. Some of the challenges posed by the global implementation of systems include the availability of trained manpower, technology limitations, and local laws/regulations. This mini-track invites research in the areas of global information systems development, implementation, and usage. Contributions may include completed research papers or emergent research forum (ERF) papers on the access and use of Information Systems (IS) by people with different abilities. This population includes those with vision impairments, age-related constraints, reading/ writing difficulties, hearing impairments and mobility challenges. These are atypical users of IS who interact with technology differently. Often, they face systemic and functional barriers in effective use of IS. They comprise an under-studied population in the IS discipline. We draw the attention of the AIS community to the broad theme of IT and users with different abilities to make IS more inclusive. Details are as follows: Track: Social Technical and Social Inclusion Issues Mini Track Title: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’17) Description This year we are proud to celebrate the 21st consecutive year of the Social Theory in Information Systems Research minitrack. Since 1996, scholars and researchers have presented cutting edge research, using social theory in their work. STIR’17 solicits papers that use social theory in IS research drawing upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, and organizational theory. We are interested in highlighting research that critically examines the constitution of ICT, and their roles in organizations and society. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory to address the main theme of the conference, “A Tradition of Innovation,” meaning work that is innovative in terms of multi- and trans-disciplinary uses of social theory and methodologies to study the impacts of new and emerging technologies on people in their organizational and social lives. We are interested in questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. Issues might include designing smart and sustainable digital futures, critically examining the constitution of ICTs, and their roles in the design, maintenance and dissolution of online and offline communities, and posing and investigating questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and sometimes hinder progress towards more useful, productive, and happier lives.
