Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences
HICSS-50: January 4-7, 2017 | Hilton Waikoloa Village
Deadline for submissions: June 15, 2016
Minitrack: Online Games and Game-Like Systems
Track: Internet and the Digital Economy
For over a decade, online games have impacted how we engage in play,
commerce and work. The Internet is an essential component of current video
games; organisations are using online games to create new business models;
and companies are training their employees with online game-like systems.
This minitrack, hosted by AIS SIGGAME, will provide a forum for researchers
to discuss the design, use and impact of online games in various contexts.
We are specifically interested in research on the information systems
concepts of online games (e.g. a study that identifies the information
system designs of successful “free-to-play” online games). In general,
topics of interest for this minitrack include: gamification, game design,
psychology of online games, online game business models, and virtual
digital economies.
There are three specific areas of research that we are interested in for
this minitrack; the use of online games in play, commerce, and work.
In play, many studies have been conducted on how people socialise using
features in online games and how interactive play is affected by game
design. For instance, Bartle (2004) has conducted work on player types in
multi-user dungeons and shows how an online multiplayer game satisfies the
needs of different types of players. For this area, we are interested in
work that shows how information system design and the game design affect
player interaction in these new environments.
In commerce, there is work on how games create virtual economy and create
new business models. For instance, work by Castranova (2001) has shown that
players in virtual game worlds will create their own economies within the
games and many game companies have hired economists to create more
efficient economies within their games. Also, new business models in gaming
such as “free-to-play” are changing the games industry (Lin and Sun 2011).
For this area, we are interested in how virtual economies are supported by
the mixture of information technology and game design, as well as how new
business models are created in the online gaming industry.
In work, games are being used in businesses to fully engage employees and
are being embedded in customer facing business processes. While businesses
have long used games to train employees (Keys and Wolfe 1990, Michael and
Chen 2005), information systems development is increasingly adapting
techniques and concepts from online games to engage customers and employees
(Zichermann and Cunningham 2011, Deterding et al. 2011). For this area, we
are interested in meaningful games in work settings and the gamification of
business processes using online games.
Deadlines:
June 15: Submit full manuscripts for review. The review is double-blind;
therefore this submission must be without author names.

On the Beautiful Big Island
Given the current turbulent state of world economy, outsourcing is coming under tremendous pressure. Companies are no longer providing long-term contracts but are renewing them based on deliverables from outsourced companies. This is putting tremendous pressure on teams to deliver quality product on time. Team adaptability and team configuration are becoming crucial to meet deadlines. Teams must be able to adapt quickly to the changing environment. Agile teams adapt and deliver quickly and provide maximum customer satisfaction. By definition, however, agile teams must be co-located. Can distributed teams be agile and adaptable? This requires careful team configuration. This mini-track examines the emerging issues related to team configuration and performance in distributed environment. Some research related to outsourcing of structured tasks has been done, but research related to emerging issues like diversity, cohesiveness, agility and adaptability related to group collaboration ac
ross semi or unstructured tasks is still emerging. In addition, the "e (Internet)" to "m (mobile)" transformation is creating exciting opportunities for groups to make real time decisions in a mobile environment.
Distributed teams, however, face many challenges of time, location, infrastructure, language, customs, socialization and politics. This is further compounded in globally distributed teams by diversity, nationality and cultural issues. As old issue are resolved, new challenges emerge that require knowledge from multiple disciplines such as information systems, social sciences, international management, leadership and political science. It is almost impossible for one individual to have expertise in so many domains, which makes this a very challenging but ultimately rewarding collaborative area of research. Given the richness and research potential of this area, it is essential to brainstorm and bring diverse points of view to develop underlying theory and frameworks. SCOPE AND TOPICS
The goal of the International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE) is to integrate theory and practice in the field of performance engineering by providing a forum for sharing ideas and experiences between industry and academia. Nowadays, complex systems of all types, like Web-based systems, data centers and cloud infrastructures, social networks, peer-to-peer, mobile and wireless systems, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, real-time and embedded systems, have increasingly distributed and dynamic system architectures that provide high flexibility, however, also increase the complexity of managing end-to-end application performance.
ICPE brings together researchers and industry practitioners to share and present their experiences, discuss challenges, and report state-of-the-art and in-progress research on performance engineering of software and systems, including performance measurement, modeling, benchmark design, and run-time performance management. The focus is both on classical metrics such as response time, throughput, resource utilization, and (energy) efficiency, as well as on the relationship of such metrics to other system properties including but not limited to scalability, elasticity, availability, reliability, and security.
This year's main theme is cost-effective performance engineering, where cost has a wide interpretation including measures such as effort and energy in addition to traditional performance measures.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Performance modeling of software

being considered in another forum. A variety of contribution styles for
papers are solicited including: basic and applied research papers for
novel scientific insights, industrial and experience papers reporting on
applying performance engineering or benchmarks in practice, and
work-in-progress/vision papers for ongoing but yet interesting work.
Different acceptance criteria apply based on the expected content of the
individual contribution types.
Authors will be requested to self-classify their papers according to
topic and contribution style when submitting their papers.
Submissions to all tracks need to be uploaded to ICPE's submission system
and conform to the ACM submission format. For detailed submission
instructions, please visit: https://icpe2017.spec.org/submissions.html.
At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register at
the full rate, attend the conference and present the paper. Presented
papers will be published in the ICPE 2017 conference proceedings that
will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. After
the conference, there will be a call for a special issue of a journal.
AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings
are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks
prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects
the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
(For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital
