Betreff: [AISWorld] AMCIS 2015 CFP: Customers and Consumers as a New
Challenge for End-User Computing (SIGOSRA)
Datum: Tue, 06 Jan 2015 13:00:50 +0100

*CALL FOR PAPERS**
**21st Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2015)*
Puerto Rico
August 13-15, 2015
http://amcis2015.aisnet.org/
*Mini-Track: Customers and Consumers as a New Challenge for End-User
Computing**
**Track: End-User Information Systems, Innovation, and Organizational
Change (SIGOSRA)*
The field of end-user computing has successfully put a focus of research
in IS development and implementation on empowering the users. However,
today, the term "user" needs to be redefined as many organizations
dramatically extend the number of people using their IT systems.
Customers, consumers, partners and other stakeholders are now becoming
users of the organizationsâ IT. These groups may comprise several
hundreds of thousands or even millions of people with different IT
skills and hardware. They are acting in diverse and often unknown
contexts. Mobile applications, web shops and web portals are the bridges
between an organization and its customers and consumers. Traditional
ways of providing training, support, empowerment, and innovation need to
be rethought with regard to this extended use.
Like the internal IT users, consumers and customers are much more
experienced in using IT today. Hence, organizations are also facing
increased expectations if they provide IT systems to their customers and
consumers. Contrary to their internal IT users, they cannot draw on
established governance structures or impose direct pressure. Instead,
organizations are to an increasing degree driven by the progress of
consumer technology and leading web-based systems, which are known and
used by their customers and consumers. The IT management in
organizations is therefore in the need to find new structures for
interacting with customers and consumers (e. g. in the fields of demand
management, innovation management, service provision).
With this mini-track, we seek to attract research, which is related to
the well-established field of end-user computing. In accordance with the
conference theme of âblue ocean researchâ, we encourage the
submission of work that extends this field by also considering customers
and consumers as end-users.
*Topics of interest include, but are not limited to*:
- Customers and consumers as end-users of IS
- Achieving a better understanding of the customersâ and consumersâ
needs
- Establishing and maintaining IT-related communication channels with
customers and consumers
- Empowering customers and consumers with flexible IT systems
- Methods for reducing the time needed for training
- Integrating consumers and customers in IT-related innovation processes
- Training and support services for customers and consumers
- Entrepreneurial and small companies as end-users
- New roles and tasks in organizations related to the IT-based
interaction with consumers and customers
- Customers' and consumers' IT skills
- Consumerization of IT
- Customer-oriented and consumer-oriented cross-department collaboration
(e. g. between IT, marketing, sales)
- Challenges of the IT organization / IT management directly facing
customers and consumers
- New methods for managing the IT departmentâs interaction with
customers and consumers
We welcome conceptual, empirical, and design-oriented contributions for
this mini-track.

Beyond amount of use:
Concepts and constructs for heterogeneous and creative uses of IS
================================================
A full-day workshop at ECIS 2015 (http://www.ecis2015.eu)
Münster, Germany, 26 May 2015
https://sites.google.com/site/ecis2015creativeuse/
============== Important dates =================
- 15 March 2015: Submission deadline for workshop papers
- 5 April 2015: Notifications of acceptance
- 26 May 2015: The workshop
============== Workshop topics =================
Increasing evidence shows that *information systems (IS) use is
heterogeneous*: IS are used in various and unexpected ways, their uses
undergo changes over time, and consist of multiple qualitatively different
uses that are context-dependent.
Despite the findings on heterogeneous use, the mainstream IS research
treats "IT use" as one thing, and often continues to operationalise IS use
as a frequency or an amount of use. Heterogeneous IS use presents several
interesting challenges for IS research, such as:
1. What are the limitations and boundary conditions of the existing
mainstream IS use models in the light of heterogeneous use patterns across
users?
2. How should heterogeneous use be integrated into the existing models and
theories?
3. What are the suitable concepts and theories to study unexpected and
hard-to-predict patterns of IS use? For example, how can theoretical
lenses such as affordances or structuration help explain unexpectedness,
heterogeneity, or creativity in IS use behaviors?
4. Should the use construct be conceptualized at less general levels of
abstraction to better reflect technologies' multi-purpose nature?
5. What are the elements of IS that enable and increase richness and
practical importance of IS use?
============== Workshop goal ===================
The goal of this full-day workshop is to bring together IS researchers to
discuss the above-listed and related challenges and develop fruitful
directions for future research.
In the morning we will focus on participants' presentations in 2 to 3
sessions where similar papers have been grouped together. The afternoon is
reserved for IS research agenda development in small groups. Based on the
profiles and submissions by the participants, we will be working in 23
groups, with a task of analysing the impact of heterogeneous and creative
IS use on our field's theories, and developing necessary future research
activities.
We are also considering inviting a keynote speaker for the workshop, from
a neighbouring research community that is relevant but distinct from IS
(e.g., humancomputer interaction or computersupported cooperative work).
=============== Submission handling ============
We hope to have 6 to 8 papers in the workshop, but are able to include up
to 10 papers in the program if the workshop proves popular.
Submit the paper (unanonymized, 2-10 pages excluding cover page and
references) by email to beyond.aou(a)gmail.com. Detailed instructions are

Description
Among the most significant changes currently facing organizations are
big data and business analytics. Luftmans annual IT management trends
research over the last 15 years has placed big data/business analytics
as the number one emerging technology investment around the globe. This,
in concert with the trends research also indicating a global increase in
the use of IT for revenue generating initiatives, is demanding
organizations to address how to leverage this important set of
technologies.
To be successful in leveraging data and business analytics,
organizations need to understand how to move from big data to smart
data, and more importantly, how to obtain demonstrable value from these
important initiatives.
The impact of big data analytics touches every area of the enterprise
marketing, sales, research, finance, human resources, supply chain,
customer relations, legal, etc. To be successful there is a strong
requirement for an organizational leader/manager to provide a new form
of information service to the entire enterprise. As a result, there is
currently a debate regarding the role of, or need for, a Chief Data
Officer (CDO) or Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) perhaps as another
member of the C-suite. Or, perhaps such a role is better placed under
the CIO, or elsewhere in the organization. There is no one best place in
which the responsibilities for the data questions raised above should
reside for every organization. Management, however, needs guidance
regarding what to take into account in determining the best alternative
for their individual situation (e.g., strategy, culture, politics,
IT-business relationship).
Clearly defined governance processes for data and business analytics are
essential. The key is for executives to consider data as an asset to
determine how best to manage it, to exploit its potential, as we would
with any other asset. How should it be acquired, stored, maintained and
put to work. Recognizing the importance of IT and non-IT organizations
working collaboratively is essential.
While there are numerous industry-oriented articles on managing data as
an asset, limited academic research has appeared. This dearth of
research publications highlights the need for theoretical and empirical
investigation into this topic. The purpose of this minitrack is to
provide a forum for presenting research in this new and important area.
Suggested Topics
Topics for this minitrack include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Data and analytics strategy
· Business organization for gaining value from data
· How and what data to capture
· Storage for the growing availability of data
· Feasibility and effectiveness of analytics
· IT, business, and industry skills needed by the organization
· Data and analytics responsibility within the organization
· Ethical questions and considerations and how to deal with them
· New business models
· Governance of data and business analytics
· Responsibility and expertise for:
strategic authority for informational assets
tactical and operational management of data assets
investment and sourcing decisions for deploying data initiatives
achieving organizational data success/value from data initiatives
ensuring data security/privacy compliance
creating innovative data-driven products and services
*IMPORTANT NOTE: *We anticipate having an IBM executive practitioner
event to be held during AMCIS where attendees from both the IBM and
AMCIS will have an opportunity to share perspectives on the topics in
this minitrack.

*Description*
Organizations are facing an expanding challenge in managing enterprise
information technology: the consumerization of IT. The arrival of
consumer-oriented devices and applications into the workplace is
re-defining how corporate IT is adopted, delivered, and consumed.
Personal devices such as smartphones and tablets may be brought to the
workplace by employees (called BYOD) or provided by employers for use by
the workforce to help employees in their jobs. Consumer-oriented
applications, often in the cloud (such as Dropbox, Skype, Yammer
LinkedIn, and GoogleDocs), may be used by employees for work-related
activities with or without company sanction. While there is no single,
universally accepted definition of IT consumerization, it can loosely be
defined as the enterprise use of technologies that were originally
designed for the consumer market.
End-users have mastered new digital technologies enough to begin to
assert their independence from the constraints that the IT department
has previously put in place to ensure the compliance, security, and
stability of the corporate IT platform. Although the IT department has
confronted rogue or shadow IT efforts in the past and dealt with
End User Computing in the 1980s and 1990s, the recent technological
advancements and the expanding level of IT literacy are changing the
nature of how corporate IT and users of IT are managed.
While there are numerous industry-oriented articles on the
consumerization of IT, little academic research has appeared. This
dearth of research publications highlights the need for theoretical and
empirical investigation into this topic. The purpose of this minitrack
is to provide a forum for presenting research in this new and important
area.
Suggested Topics
Topics for this minitrack include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Managing BYOD and CYOD in the enterprise
· Organizational impact of consumer-oriented devices and applications
· New organizational structures for corporate IT (vs. private IT)
· Competitive advantages enabled by IT consumerization
· Organizational design impacts as private and business boundaries
increasingly blur
· Digital co-creation as end-users have access to increasingly
sophisticated consumer tools
· Behavioral impacts of IT consumerization, for example, impacts on
employee morale and job motivation
· Issues pertaining to inter- and intra-organizational ecosystems (e.g.,
implementing a digital innovation platform with internal and/or external
partners)
· Managing the imbalance between IT supply and demand (e.g., frustrated
users who believe the IT department cannot deliver quickly enough)
· Challenges to security brought on by employees using their own devices
at work
· IT support and IT governance issues brought on by the consumerization
of IT
· Legal issues pertaining to data ownership and terms-of-service liability

Call for Papers
Special Issue of the American Journal of Business
The Internet of Things in Business
http://docrea.org/AJB/
**Special Issue Focus**
Not many would question the impact of the Internet on business,
communication, information, and society as a whole. This disruptive
innovation has birthed innovative cyberjuggernauts such as Amazon,
Facebook, and Google as well as worrisome denizens such as Anonymous,
LulzSec, and too many others to mention. Now the interconnected entity
is expanding to more than computing devices creating an intertwined mesh
of everyday devices from bluetooth smart watches to cars autonomously
transporting us between computer-controlled office environments from our
managed networked homes.
The Internet of Things (IoT) provides more powerful B2B and B2C
opportunities than ever before. As IoT networks grow, we must
re-envision all aspects of business. Consider how powerful targeted
advertising could be when we know what consumers have in their
refrigerator and pantry. Customized electronic billboards will no longer
be limited to banner ad driven cookie information on Web pages; instead
advertisers can create a custom profile of you on the spot given your
geolocational data. Supply chain experts can manage and analyze
connected assembly lines, factories, and warehouses to ensure delivery
of a product they know you intend to purchase because your smart home
has requested it. That is indeed a powerful long tail.
Will the potential connectivity between smart cars and ride share apps
such as Uber bring about new entrepreneurial opportunities? If your
connected devices know your daily schedule will they automatically
summon a ride at appropriate times? Will your iWatch equipped with
health monitoring apps warn you and your physician when a potential
health condition surfaces? The potential for new ideas and business
models are only constrained by the imagination.
How can businesses utilize the massive amounts of rich information,
increased interactivity, and device connectedness? No longer will
managers use asset tags or RFID. Instead devices will constantly report
their own location. As more consumers become more connected in all
aspects of their professional and personal lives businesses must
consider how to best tailor interactions. A car dealer may already know
how often someone from her local zip code searches for a new car via the
Web, but what if the dealer knows that this potential customer has
driven by her lot and looked at three specific models over the past
month via her Google glasses? Will the dealer send a message the next
time the potential customer drives by? Is that too invasive or what
people want?
As every single device--from a pacemaker to a power plant--collects and
stores massive amounts of data every microsecond, the rich information
complexity brings privacy and security challenges to the fore as well.
People worry about drones flying around us in Orwellian fashion, but
what about toilets recommending insurance rate adjustment? How can
businesses facilitate trust relationships to harness interconnected
interactions?
This special issue will solicit papers from all areas of business in
order to provide a multifaceted approach to how our diverse disciplines
might approach the organizational shifts that occur within the IoT
paradigm. Multi-disciplinary papers will be especially welcome.
**Potential Topics (Partial List)**
--Business Trust Relationships
--Digital Asset Management
--Entrepreneurial IoT Opportunities
--Intelligent Traffic Management
--Interconnected communication and networking
--Internet Enabled Assembly and Logistics
--Micro-transactions
--Near Field Communications for Payment
--Omnipresent Data Collection
