Call for Papers: IEEE Transaction on Emerging Topics in Computing (TETC)
seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on *Big Data**.*
CFP Website: http://www.swinflow.org/si/BigDataCFP.htm.
Big Data consists of datasets that grow so large that they become
awkward to work with using on-hand computer data and computation
management tools. Difficulties include, but are not limited to, capture,
storage, search, sharing, analytics, and visualizing. Working with data
sets of increasing scale allows analysts to "spot business trends,
prevent diseases, and combat crime." Big data size is beyond the ability
of commonly used computer software and hardware tools to capture,
manage, and process the data within a tolerable elapsed time, hence
demanding new innovative solutions. It has attracted a high degree of
interdisciplinary interest internationally. This special issue is
focusing on this new strategic research area to address challenges about
big data.Original andunpublished high-quality research results are
solicited to explore various challenging topics that include, but are
not limited to:
·Big Data theoretical models, standards and theories
·Innovative computer software and hardware architecture for Big Data
processing
·Big Data mining, advanced analytics and visualization

CONFERENCE VENUE
Istanbul is a city of unparalleled social and cultural richness. It
is as fascinating and historical as it is dynamic and modern. Serving
as the capital of two mighty empires for sixteen centuries, Eastern
Roman (or Byzantine) and Ottoman, and set squarely between two
continents, Istanbul has cultures and traditions that blend East with
West and Mediterranean with Anatolian. Each civilization that has made
Istanbul its home has left its mark in sublime and splendid ways, and
the result a city that gives one the feeling of universal history at
every step.
Istanbul has always been a meeting place, a crosspoint and a
destination. With the Ataturk Istanbul International Airport, getting
to and from Istanbul has never been easier. With a capacity of far
over 25 million travelers per year Istanbul is less than a three-hour
flight from most European cities. Istanbul has a second airport
located on the Asian side of the city, Sabiha Gokcen International
Airport, which is an important arrival point especially for low-cost
airlines. Overall, Istanbul is served by more than 50 major airlines
to hundreds of cities around the world.

The 6th IEEE International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and
Applications
December 16-18, 2013
Kauai, Hawaii
Call for Papers
Service-oriented computing is considered today a key technology for the
development of robust and high quality intelligent distributed and
embedded applications. Extensive research and development in the past
few years has pushed SOA technology into state-of-the-art application
areas such as context-aware, cloud-connected, mobile enterprise systems.
However, many of the critical components on building reliable, robust,
and user-centric sensor-based SOA systems are still open for research.
Hence, it is timely to reexamine SOA research opportunities and identify
new research challenges for next generation SOA.
One of the future SOA applications is large-scale cyber-physical systems
(CPSs) that include deep interactions between cyber-sides and
physical-sides through massive sensors, actuators, mobile devices, and
computing servers connected by heterogeneous networks. The services of
large-scale CPSs have challenging requirements such as accurate
timeliness, high reliability, and dynamic adaptability. Many of the
service components are deployed on resource limited embedded systems and
are performance sensitive; others are deployed on cloud servers
providing highly parallel services. Thus, SOA may provide effective
solutions for managing the ever-increasing complexity while meeting the
challenging requirements of CPS services on largely distributed,
heterogeneous and dynamic resource environments.
The 2013 IEEE International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and
Applications (SOCA 2013) will be held in Kauai, Hawaii, with topics of
general service oriented computing and also the focused area of SOA for
large-scale CPSs. The conference includes three days of parallel tracks
program, special-topic workshops/ tutorials, and panel discussion.

FSaaS: Configuring Policies for Managing Shared Files Among Cooperating,
Distributed Applications
Marco Di Sano (Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer
Engineering, University of Catania, Catania, Italy), Antonella Di
Stefano (Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering,
University of Catania, Catania, Italy), Giovanni Morana (Department of
Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Catania,
Catania, Italy) and Daniele Zito (Department of Electrical, Electronic
and Computer Engineering, University of Catania, Catania, Italy)
In this paper, the authors introduce and describe the concept of File
System as a Services (FSaaS), an highly configurable cloud service that
enables cooperating, distributed applications to define their own rules
and policies for managing sets of files shared. The FSaaS aims to create
a logical virtual space, containing references to shared files, whose
management layer supports the same functionalities of a file system
(basic file operations) but where each single file can have different
policies for consistency, synchronization and replication. This work
explains the idea at the base of FSaaS, describes in details its main
components and their interactions and illustrates two use cases for
better explaining the provided functionalities.

Adaptive Web Services Monitoring in Cloud Environments
**
Yi Wei (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of
Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA) and M. Brian Blake (Department of
Computer Science, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA)
Cloud computing environments provide flexible infrastructures for
third-party management of organizations' information technology (IT)
assets. With web services being a standard for realizing web-based
business capabilities, the emergence of cloud computing will bring new
challenges to different web service activities. In this paper, the
authors propose an agent-based framework that employs a team of
management and monitoring agents on different scopes to provides
effective service management in a cloud environment. To tackle the
dynamism in service operations, an adaptive monitoring algorithm is
proposed. The algorithm is inspired by the congestion control approach
from the TCP protocol and provides efficient, up-to-date information
about service status without exhaustive monitoring. Experimental results
show that the monitoring algorithm provides significant benefits when
compared to the more exhaustive methods. This approach also facilitates
other service activities, such as cross cloud service discovery.

Delivering Deep Health Information Using Clinical Eye
**
Olga Nabuco (Decision Support Systems Division, Center for Information
Technology Renato Archer -- CTI, Campinas, Brazil)
This paper introduces a web-based semantic tool that provides more
detailed information about a term selected by the user of a web browser,
the Clinical Eye. This tool was initially designed for the medical area
of cardiology, which is still controversial in terms of vocabularies.
Anontology has been developed as a reference base where those different
vocabularies converge. The information supplied by the tool was taken
from specialized medical web pages and technical documents. It is a tool
of low interference for ongoing activities, so it can be used during a
clinical activity. It has been designed according to requirements raised
by studies in various medical communities, which pointed the use of
Internet during consultations and medical needs for deep information.

A Formal Approach for the Validation of Web Service Orchestrations
**
Wael Sellami (ReDCAD, FSEGS, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia), Hatem
Hadj Kacem (ReDCAD, FSEGS, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia) and Ahmed
Hadj Kacem (ReDCAD, FSEGS, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia)
A web service composition is considered as a real revolution in SOA
(Service Oriented Architecture). It is based on assembling independent
and loosely coupled services to build a composed web service. This
composition can be described from both a local or a global perspective
by respective orchestration or choreography. The validation of web
service orchestrations is the main topic of this work. It is based on
the verification of two classes of properties: generic and specific
properties. The former can be checked for any invoked web services
whereas the specific properties are different interdependence
relationships between activities within an orchestration process. These
properties cannot be directly verified on the orchestration process, so,
the authors have to use formal techniques. In this paper, they propose a
formal approach for the validation of web service orchestrations. This
work adopts WS-BPEL 2.0 as the language to describe the web service
orchestration and uses the SPIN model-checker for the verification
engine. The WS-BPEL specification is translated into Promela code which
is the input language for the SPIN model-checker, in order to check
generic and specific properties expressed with LTL (Linear Temporal Logic).

Managing Architectural Reconfiguration at Runtime
**
Sihem Loukil (ReDCAD Laboratory, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia),
Slim Kallel (ReDCAD Laboratory, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia) and
Mohamed Jmaiel (ReDCAD Laboratory, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia)
Managing dynamic reconfiguration of software systems is a tedious task
in the software development because of the substantially increasing need
for continuously available systems even at runtime. In particular, the
software architecture of dynamically adaptive systems must continuously
adapt to varying environmental conditions and user requirements.
Therefore, they propose a wide range of possible configurations. The
static enumeration of all the possible configurations is a difficult
task. Moreover, not all dynamic reconfiguration operations can be
foreseen at design time. Some reconfigurations may appear when the
system is already deployed. In this context, we propose to combine the
Architecture Description Languages and the Aspect-Oriented Software
Development paradigm in order to make the dynamic reconfiguration
process easier to design, understand and possible to validate. Also,
this combination allows to easily evolving the reconfiguration policies
even at runtime.

*CALL FOR PAPERS*
Mission of IJWP:
The *International Journal of Web Portals (IJWP)* focuses on enterprise
integration strategy that deals with the exchange of messages as the
basic component of the solution architecture enabling the integration of
people, information, applications and business processes. Portals are
expected to care more about the infrastructure services they consume,
which is a key architectural difference between the past and the future
generations of portals and represent the paradigm shift in enterprise
integration strategy. This paradigm shift focuses on identifying core
integration components, assets, enterprise portals and encourages the
reuse and refinement of these assets for integration projects. However,
these topics are rarely discussed among the practitioners or in the
international journals without primarily encouraging use of the
solutions from particular vendors. It is important to establish a
sounding board (international journal) which provides readers with an
independent view of models for enterprise integration strategies, vendor
independent tool sets, and the experience with the development of
strategic solutions carried out within the context and rules of the
enterprise's integration architecture. The readers are expected to
benefit from having access to the latest practical solutions, as well as
research papers in the field of integration approaches, the review of
tools which can effectively and proactively support integration
objectives across the enterprise.
Coverage of IJWP:
Topics to be discussed in this journal include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Business process integration and management using SOA and portals
Case studies for using portals with content management systems
Composite Web service in portal frameworks (creation and enabling
infrastructure)
Customization and portal user interface issues, multilingual portals
E-commerce applications based on portals and SOA
Evolution of B2E & B2B portals as windows into the enterprise, on demand
services in portals
Frameworks for building portal applications, development tooling, and
development environments (e.g Portlet Factory, NetBean portal plug-in,
and other tools)
Frameworks for designing SOA solution with portal platforms, models, and
modeling tools usage, efficiency, and usability
Grid portals
Managing development of portals & SOA solutions
Mobile portals, mobile portal platform, and content management systems
applied to mobile portals

IUI 2014
19th International Conference
on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI'2014)
Haifa, Israel February 24-27, 2014
http://www.iuiconf.org/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOPE AND TOPICS OF INTEREST
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IUI 2014 is the 19th annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces
community and
serves as the principal international forum for reporting outstanding
research
and development on intelligent user interfaces.
IUI is where the community of people interested in Human-Computer
Interaction
(HCI) meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are very
interested
in contributions that bridge these two fields and also related fields,
such as
psychology, cognitive science, computer graphics, the arts, etc. IUI
researchers
are interested in improving the symbiosis between humans and computers,
so that
interface design and interactive experiences yield higher performance
outcomes.
This may involve designing interfaces that incorporate intelligent automated
capabilities, if the net impact is a human-computer interaction that
improves
performance or usability in critical ways. It may also involve designing an
interface that effectively leverages human skills and capabilities, so that
human performance with an application excels. In other cases, such as
educational interface design, it may involve exercising judgment in when
not to
automate a function so that humans are encouraged to exert themselves as
they
acquire new skills or domain knowledge.
We call for original submissions that describe novel technologies and
applications to intelligent user interfaces.
IUI topics of interest including, but not limited to:
* User input
- Processing of multi-modal input
- Natural language and speech processing
- Gestures, eye gaze, face recognition
* Generation of system output
- Intelligent visualization tools
- Intelligent generation of user-consumable content
* Ubiquitous computing
- Intelligent interfaces for ubiquitous computing
- Smart environments and tangible computing
* Help and Persuasive Technologies
- Intelligent assistants for complex tasks
- Support for collaboration in multiuser environments
- Intelligent information and knowledge management
- Persuasive technologies in IUI
* Personalization

- Social networks and collaboration
* IUI Design
- Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation
- Proactive and agent-based paradigms for user interaction
- Example-and demonstration-based interfaces
* User studies
- User studies concerning intelligent interfaces
- Evaluations of implemented intelligent user interfaces
* Semantic Web
- Query interfaces and novel interfaces for Linked Data
- Consuming Linked Data
- Interfaces for creating and using large ontologies
SUBMISSION VENUES
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* Full and Short Papers
We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces,
applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical
studies, or
design techniques. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital
Library.
IUI 2014 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new
concepts or directions for interface design. We do not require
evaluations with
users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for
their
stated contribution. Full papers should make substantial, novel and relevant
contributions to the field. Short papers can either contain smaller
contributions, novel ground-breaking ideas, or work in progress.
Accepted full
papers will be invited for oral presentation and short paper either as
oral or
poster presentation.
Abstracts Due: October 4, 2013
Full and Short Papers Due: October 9, 2013
* Demonstrations
The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference.
Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important
intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions
relevant
to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited
to, the
topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a
scientific
result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial
software packages.
Submissions Due: December 12, 2013
* Industrial Track
The industrial track represents an opportunity for the companies in the
field to
present their late works (as posters or interactive demos) and receive
valuable
feedback from the research community. It also provides an opportunity for
recruitment and for networking. The industry track will not be
peer-reviewed but
their relevance for the field will be judged by a jury.
Submissions Due: to be confirmed
* Student Consortium
The IUI 2014 Student Consortium provides an opportunity for Masters and
Doctoral
students to present and receive feedback about their research in an
interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of mentors,
selected
from senior people in the field. We invite students who feel they would
benefit
from this kind of feedback on their research to apply for this unique
opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as
well as
senior researchers in the field. The strongest candidates will be those
who have
a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but
who are
not so far along their research that they can no longer make changes.
Submissions Due: November 1, 2013
* Workshops
Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite
submissions
of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any
of the
conference topics.
Workshop Proposals due: September 16, 2013
