Call for Papers: THE USE AND IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORKING
Special issue of the JOURNAL OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED ELECTRONIC COMMERCE RESEARCH
Guest editors: Frantisek SUDZINA, Hans-Dieter ZIMMERMANN, and Sherah KURNIA
http://www.jtaer.com/documentos/CFP_the_use_and_impact_of_social_networking…
Social networking sites are already widely-spread and are here to stay. We experienced the rise of social networking sites and we learned that first-movers were not necessarily winners. We also saw Google+’s uptake that was faster than Facebook’s, and we observed efforts to revive MySpace. Whereas Social Networking Sites probably have a certain life cycle, it can be assumed that underlying communication and interaction patterns are more universal. In addition, the development of social networking sites in China is worth mentioning. Facebook is blocked there, while Renren seems to be a very successful substitute.
We have seen some integration between Web 2.0 tools, such as Twitter and Foursquare messages appearing on Facebook or LinkedIn. Conversion of connections from one social networking site to another is getting easier. As it is common with innovation, imitations come along quickly. For example, music once was mostly associated with MySpace, but now we also listen to music on Facebook and networking sites such as Spotify. On the other hand, some sites discontinued and outsourced some features. For example, Facebook discontinued its social coupon Deals, while Facebook’s Marketplace is owned by Oodle now.
A common feature of social games is that they involve virtual goods; these improve strength or the speed of levelling up. Virtually all social games allow to buy at least some virtual items, so players, who are willing to pay, are able to progress faster. This is also the reason why some people stopped playing social games. One may expect that as a response to that, there will be new social games developed, where the progress will not depend on money spent.
Another issue with virtual goods in social games is that the rules forbid players to trade with their virtual goods. But people sell and buy these goods anyway. In order to comply with the rules, the claim that it is not a sale but a contract for finding or achieving goals necessary for obtaining the virtual goods.
People tend to get bored with one game after some time. So, it is normal to expect players switching between games. There are various issues linked to the switching. It is also impossible to catch up with players, who started to play at the time the game was introduced. There is also no simple way to transfer the refund for virtual goods, which have not been used. This could be partially solved by Facebook Credits. Mandatory usage of Facebook Credits for all applications has a wide-reaching impact on the whole Facebook ecosystem.
Daily-deal/social-coupon sites grew rapidly in the last few years. However, it is difficult and expensive to attract new subscribers. There is an increasing number of anecdotal reports which suggest that this type of marketing is not suitable for everybody. Not all business can sustain such huge discounts. These deals also attract existing customers and potential customers, who already know about the company and who only want to take advantage of the lower price. So it is not so effective in attracting truly new customers. Even the conversion rate of one-time customers into regular customers is not so high. Not to mention that there is an increasing competition between big players (some of whom already backed down) and other local competitors.
Furthermore, marketing communication is worth exploring in the context of social networking sites, for example how organizations and even individuals advertise on social networking sites, including social games. A relatively recent phenomenon is related to promotion of organizations’ and (or) their products’ Facebook URLs in addition to (or instead of) regular organizations‘ web sites on marketing medium such as billboards. This raises interesting questions: How do organizations use social networking sites for marketing communication? Is it a one-way communication as it was the case with traditional media, or is it a truly two-way communication?
But social networking sites have also influenced communication between consumers. This may have a direct or indirect bearing on speed of product adoption. It is possible to argue that social networking sites made on-line shopping and of e-recruitment more socially acceptable. There are certainly other possible ways (other than those we are aware of) in which social networking sites adoption can influence business, although the extent of the impact varies from one country to another.
SUBJECT COVERAGE
Particular topics to be addressed in this issue might include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Business Models of
- Social Networking Sites (of any type, i.e. LinkedIn/XING, Academia.edu/Researchgate.org, Facebook/Google+, ones with an unclear business model such as Twitter, even currently less used such as Fiendster/Myspace and controversial such as Netlog)
- Games on Facebook and other social networking sites
- Other sites residing above existing social networking sites, e.g. referral sites such as TopProspect and NotchUp
- Daily-deal/social-coupon sites (business models and competition between Groupon, Living Social, Google Offers and alike, including discontinued ones such as Facebook Deals)
- Mobile geolocation services (such as Foursqaure and Google Latitude)
2. Marketing and Social Networking Sites
- Organizations advertising on any social networking site
- People advertising on Facebook walls
- Advertisement in games
- Gamification of non-game applications (such as in the case of Foursquare)
- Promotion of organizations‘ and/or products‘ Facebook URLs in addition to or instead of regular organizations‘ web sites even in old media
- Usage of social networking sites for marketing communication
3. Societal Impact of Social Networking Sites
- Impact of social networking sites on social acceptability of shopping on-line
- Impact of social networking sites on consumers’ communication patterns
- Impact of social networking sites on social acceptability of e-recruitment
- Impact of social networking sites on speed of product adoption
- Other business-related impact of social networking sites adoption on society
NOTES FOR INTENDING AUTHORS
We are seeking original manuscripts on the use and impact of social networking. Papers can focus on particular social networking sites or they can deal with more general communication and interaction patterns specific to a particular type or category of social networking sites. Empirical research papers are encouraged. Most of the journals and conferences focus on publishing papers, which report statistically significant results. However, contribution to the existing literature can occur also when no statistically significant impact is observed. One possibility is when the null hypothesis is interesting as such. Another possibility is when null impact is observed but previous research has indicated significant impact which suggests that the relationship of interest does not hold under certain conditions. Thus replications are acceptable as well.
Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
Author guidelines can be found at http://www.jtaer.com/author_guidelines.doc. All submissions will be refereed by at least three reviewers. Submissions should be directed by email to fransu(a)asb.dk with copy to sherahk(a)unimelb.edu.au and hansdieter.zimmermann(a)fhsg.ch.

INTRODUCTION
-------------
From the Far East, to the Americas and to Europe, cities, villages and
their surroundings are evolving towards a new dimension in which the
info infrastructure becomes an indispensable asset of our life,
contributes to the development of info-ecosystems embracing 'smart
mobility and last-mile logistics', 'smart health', 'smart government',
'smart culture and tourism', the sustainability of the natural resources
and the green economy. Such integrated effort of info-urbanism is
expected to produces social innovation and, inevitably, leads to wonder
about what forms can take the smart education underlined by all pieces
that compose the mosaic of the info-ecosystems.
The virtual infrastructure - web and mobile - will be integrated more
closely with the physical landscape - internet of thing and sensible
physical places - incorporating the latter into a complex ecosystem
which will bring forward opportunities to learn from everyday life.
Technologies, increasingly embedded into the everyday spaces and
artefacts, will make the places not only more sensitive but also
responsive and, potentially, coevolutionary (TEP - Technology Enhanced
Places) will give rise to new landscapes in which one can experiment,
seamless, the integration of physicality and virtuality.
The person, considered in all her/his complexity, will be placed at the
center of educational contexts and scenarios increasingly ubiquitous,
complex, organic. Scenarios where the mediating role of technology will
widen over the time to: foster relationships with the natural
environments, filter content needed to support meaningful experiences at
glocal level, disclose feedback necessary to learn how to manage "in
action", the complexity of static and dynamic, of learning contexts and
processes.
Through which educational path will everyone, and especially youths,
become “participatorly” aware citizens of the future "SimCities"?
How will we learn from the open books that are represented by cities of
art, parks, agro-tech and industrial/productive districts ?
How will data flowing from sensorised areas and personal devices will be
elaborated to support awareness and continuous learning?
How will our behaviour be influenced by knowledge of co-evolution
mechanisms and limits of the ecosystems?
Will the educational infrastructure be smart enough to readjust, even
“autopoietically”, to satisfy the needs that everyone could develop life
long, in different contexts?
Would "smart cities learning" help to reinforce social inclusion and a
common sense of belonging ?

Venue: Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Solbjerg Plads 3,
DK-2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark
Wednesday and Thursday, 5 ? 6 December 2012, in Copenhagen,
Denmark
Deadline for submissions: August 1st, 2012.
=========================================================
Theme, Scope and Focus:
The HUMAN WORK INTERACTION DESIGN 2012 (HWID 2012) working
conference analyzes the combination of empirical Work
Analysis and Human Computer Interaction (HCI).
Human work analysis involves user goals, user requirements,
tasks and procedures, human factors, cognitive and physical
processes, contexts (organizational, social, cultural). In
particular in the HCI and human factors tradition, work is
analyzed as end-user tasks performed within a work domain.
The focus is on the user?s experience of tasks (procedures)
and the artefact environment (constraints in the work
domain). Hierarchical Task Analysis (Annett & Duncan, 1967)
and Work Domain Analysis (Salmon, Jenkins, Stanton, &
Walker, 2010) are among the methods that can be used to
analyse the goal-directed tasks, and map the work
environmental constraints and opportunities for behavior. In
addition, there is a strong tradition in HCI for studying
work with ethnographic methods (Button & Sharrock, 2009) and
from socio-technical perspectives (e.g., Nocera, Dunckley, &
Sharp, 2007). These approaches focus on work as end-user
actions performed together with other people in a field
setting, that is, the user?s experience of using systems are
social and organizational experiences. User experience,
usability and interaction design are influenced by these
approaches and techniques for analyzing and interpreting the
human work, which eventually manifests in the design of
technological products, systems and applications.
The working conference will present current research of
human work interaction design and industrial experiences in
a wide spectrum of domains such as medical, safety critical
systems, e-government, enterprise IT solutions, learning
systems, information systems for rural populations, etc. The
relevant domains not mentioned here could also be considered.
The purpose of the working conference is to enable
practitioners and researchers to analyze the relation
between empirical work analysis and HCI/user experience.
After the conference, a limited number of selected papers
will be published in an IFIP Springer book. We expect the
participants will be people from industry and academia with
an interest on empirical work analysis, HCI, interaction
design and usability and user experience in work situations
and at the workplace. The working conference will be
conducted in a good social atmosphere that invites to
openness and provides time to reflection and discussion
about each of the accepted papers and cases.
We are interested in submissions that discuss the before
mentioned aspects of work analysis and how the results of
these manifests in the design of technological products,
systems and applications. Also, today generic designs are
applied to use-situations with very different purposes, as
using the same social software or game for work and leisure
situations. Thus, design shifts from design of a technology
to design of various use-situations encompassing the same
technological design, and we find that there is a need to
discuss the relations between work analysis and design in
both situations.
The topics include, but are not limited to:
* Techniques and methods for mapping the relations between
work analysis and interaction design
* Translating (Cognitive) Work Analysis to Interaction Design
* How work analysis can feed HCI testing and evaluation
* Work analysis and HCI in medical and safety critical ICT
* Work analysis and HCI in business contexts
* Work analysis and HCI in enterprise-level systems
* Work analysis and HCI in e-government services
* Work analysis and HCI in Mobile Devices
* User experience in work situations and at the workplace
* Design cases bridging the gap between work analysis and
interaction design
* Socio-technical theory and HCI combined
* Work analysis and HCI in cultural contexts
* The concept of Work Analysis (Enid Mumford, Tavistock,
?work style?, HCI work analysis, cognitive work
analysis, more)
* Theory for relating interaction design and work analysis
* Synergies between work analysis and model-driven
interface development
* Evolution of interface models in accordance to evolving
human activity systems
* Impact of emerging interaction technologies in human
work practice
* Gamification of work ? analysis of the use of gaming
elements in work information systems to improve the user
experience at work

Workshop at NordiCHI 2012 ( http://nordichi2012.org/
<http://nordichi2012.org/> )
Workshop Website: http://yasuoka.dk/cfp/
The objective of the Cultural Impact workshop at NordiCHI 2012 is to
share our experiences, identify themes, and examine unexplored topics
about cultural impact on User Experience (UX) design and evaluation
methods. The expected result is an establishment of an international
community on this topic for collective learning.
By accumulating knowledge through the international community,
ultimately the workshop and the community will contribute to emerging
demands to understand UX in services and products design domains
internationally.

[Themes and goals] http://yasuoka.dk/cfp/themes-goals/
<http://yasuoka.dk/cfp/themes-goals/>
This is an active, interdisciplinary workshop encouraging dialogue
between researchers and practitioners who are interested in the issues
regarding cultural impact on User Experience design and evaluation
methods.
This workshop aims at extending our understandings and lead to
practical recommendations for people applying User Experience methods.
The workshop has six goals;
1. Share each other?s current findings and experiences to open up an
international dialogue of design and User Experience Methods in
different cultural settings.
2. Discuss the variety of culture conceptions relied on in the existing
HCI research and their implications on the assumed cultural impact in
the methods.
3. Explore UX methods? specific adaptability
+ Which UX methods can be transferred from one context to another?
+ Which UX methods have to be localized largely?
+ Which UX methods can hardly be adapted in other social contexts?
+ What does it entail to localize a UX method to fit a cultural context
in question?
+ What does it mean to enculturate a UX method in a specific cultural
context; how has it been or how will it be modified or interpreted in
practice?
4. Examine unexplored topics on cultural impacts on User Experience
design and evaluation methods;

Conference Themes
C&T focuses on the notion of communities as social entities comprised of people who share something in common; this common element may be geography, needs, interests, practices, organizations, or other bases for social connection. Communities are considered to be a basic unit of social experience. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can interact with communities in many complex ways, For example, ICTs can support community formation and development by facilitating communication and coordination among members. Conversely, the lack of attention to the surrounding community context may inhibit the design and effective use of ICT innovations thus eroding the potential for new technologies to enhance everyday life.
Topics appropriate for submission to this conference are manifold. Examples of some of the vibrant areas of communities and technology research include, but are not limited to:
• (Virtual) community formation and development
• Technical support for communities
• Communities and innovation
• Urban informatics
• Social capital, communities, and technology
• Interactions between online and offline communities
• Augmenting interactions between physically co-located groups
• Communities and e-government
• Ethnographic and case studies of virtual communities
• Trust, privacy and security issues in virtual communities
• Challenges of coordinating communities during natural disasters
• Economics of technology-facilitated communities
• Inter-organizational communities and technology
• Communities, technology, and learning/education

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
MONITORING AND PREDICTION
OF CLOUD SERVICES
(MoPoC'12)
In conjunction with the 10th International Conference on Service
Oriented Computing (ICSOC 2012)
November 12-16, 2012, Shanghai, China
Web: http://w3c.org.au/mopoc2012/
###################################################################
Workshop Theme
###################################################################
Cloud services are perpetually becoming more important to current
IT operations. For instance, according to IDC, the 'revenue from
public IT cloud services exceeded $21.5 billion in 2010 and will
reach $72.9 billion in 2015, representing a compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) of 27.6%.'[1]. Along with the cloud's increasingly
central role to the services industry, monitoring cloud services as
well as the applications deployed on them is becoming a priority -
if mission-critical business applications are deployed to a cloud,
real-time monitoring of service quality becomes as integral to the
cloud as business activity monitoring is to current (in house)
process management solutions. However, currently deployed solutions
are minimal at best. Techniques for dynamically monitoring,
predicting and capturing the relationship between service quality,
current cloud service allocation and changes in workload patterns
remain both, an open research problem and a practical need. Overall,
the integration of cloud monitoring, workload prediction, service
performance models and optimization techniques to effect an
end-to-end automated monitoring and provisioning process over
cloud environments is a hitherto neglected research area.
The goal of the MoPoC'12 workshop is to strengthen scholarly and
industrial research in algorithms, methods and tools for monitoring
the current state of cloud services and/or applications deployed to
the cloud (with regards to, for instance, performance, availability,
compliance with governmental regulations, or security), as well as
for predicting these parameters for future services or applications.
The workshop fosters the exchange of ideas between practitioners
building state-of-the-art solutions, and researchers interested in
the conceptual foundation of future monitoring and prediction
solutions for cloud services. The event accepts paper submissions
regarding novel ideas for cloud monitoring and prediction, as well
as experience reports on quality monitoring and prediction of cloud
services in industrial settings.
[1] http://www.idc.com/prodserv/idc_cloud.jsp
Topics
###################################################################
The workshop accepts mature work-in-progress or final results, as
well as short papers containing initial results, in the following
main topics of interest:
- Novel solutions for cloud monitoring and prediction with regards,
but not limited to:
* Performance
* Cloud resource utilization / energy efficiency
* Availability
* Costs / Profitability
* Cloud Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
* Compliance with governmental regulations
* Security
* Application- and domain-specific monitoring of cloud services
- Experience reports on quality monitoring and prediction of cloud
services
Paper Submission and Publication
###################################################################
Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished
research papers, as
- Full papers (up to 12 pages including all references and figures)
- Short papers (up to 6 pages including all references and figures)
on the listed or related topics.
Please submit papers via Easychair at
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mopoc12.
All workshop papers will be published in the combined workshop post-
proceedings of ICSOC 2012, as part of Springer LNCS Services
Science Subline. Thus, papers must be prepared in the Springer LNCS
style. Submissions will be reviewed by the workshop pogramm commitee.
Each submission will be evaluated by 2 to 4 commitee members with
regard to originality, maturity, technical quality and clarity of
presentation. At least one author of an accepted paper is expected
to attend the workshop and present the work. Attendance of the
workshop will require registration to the main conference.
