Betreff: [AISWorld] Call for papers for a Special issue on Requirements
and Complexity
Datum: Fri, 27 Jul 2012 15:44:40 -0400
Von: Kalle Lyytinen <kjl13(a)case.edu>
An: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Call for Papers
ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems
(see http://tmis.acm.org/)
Special Issue: “Complexity of Systems Evolution: Requirements Engineering
Perspective“
The motivation of this special issue is that many of the RE assumptions
are now in suspect or related research delivers decreasing returns (Jarke
et al 2011)[1]. The community has recognized for some time a need for a
shift in RE focus which is also amplified by changes in computational
paradigms and capabilities that draw upon platform strategies, web
services, and virtualization of both application services and development
platforms. These trends have significant implications for views of
modularity and requirements evolution, complexity of RE tasks, and the
economics and costs related to application and service use and
development.
The aim of the proposed special issue is to introduce, refine, validate
models and theories around system complexity, evolution and requirements.
The proposed special issue has three distinguishing features in its effort
to frame, influence, and direct the discourse around requirements
engineering. First, it examines RE as shaping “socio-technical systems,”
reflecting the emerging interactions of people and technology that need to
be recognized in system requirements. This requires simultaneous
understanding of both the social and the technical. Second, it addresses
evolutionary and complexity aspects of RE that affect development,
adoption, mutual-adaptation, and co-evolution of increasingly multifaceted
socio-technical systems. We are less interested in discussion of how
great some RE methods are or will be and more interested in the mechanisms
by which RE activity in complex settings comes to pass. Third, it embraces
issues of scalability. There are some existence proofs that digital
infrastructure can enable large-scale RE as for example experiences from
open source software development testify. There is, as yet, little
systematic investigation of how scalability occurs in RE for complex
settings.
In particular the special issue will focus on a series of interrelated
questions such as:
• How to theorize and study complexity within RE tasks?
• New perspectives on RE complexity: biological systems, complexity
evolutionary economics
• What theoretical perspectives can inform how and why complex
requirements knowledge evolves as it is generated, validated, and
distributed?
• How requirements, system evolution, and environmental change interact?
• How different types of knowledge interact to shape requirements and
their evolution?
• What are the origins and flows of influence of requirements knowledge
for complex evolving systems? How can non-linear influences be effectively
managed in RE evolution?
• What is the effect of speed and scale in requirements processes?
• What is the role of goals and constraints and their complex interactions
in RE?
• What are the effects of Governance on requirements complexity?
We encourage submissions of high-risk, creative scholarship that include
one or more of the following: strong theoretical contributions, attention
to design of design, solid quantitative studies, qualitative longitudinal
case-based research on RE processes, and attention to challenges of scale
and complexity (of people, of artifacts, of world-views, design elements)

The 22^nd Annual Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems will
be held in Orlando, Florida, on December 15-16, 2012, just prior to the
International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). The purpose of
the workshop is to provide a forum for discussion and interaction among
scholars with research interests in the cutting edge issues of
information technologies and systems. The theme of the conference is
"Digital Innovation for Sustainability*.*"
Sustainability is the capacity of systems to endure over time. Even
though this definition is intended mostly for ecosystems, it obviously
extends to systems created and impacted by humans such as information
systems. Unconstrained human economic development has lead not only to
destruction of delicate ecosystems, but in the end has contributed to
volatile economic cycles and economic damage from natural disasters.
Information technology is both a contributor and a potential solution to
the challenges of managing sustainable development. Better decision
support for public policy planners, businesses and consumers can lead to
better long-term decisions. Examples are numerous and include
inefficiencies in power systems which can be identified by data mining
tools and solutions which can be generated by optimization.
Virtualization, used properly, can reduce the carbon footprint of
existing information systems. Understanding the economic and
environmental impact of information systems, can lead to greater
sustainable adoption, use, and retirement of information systems and
technologies.
Since it is a workshop, WITS actively solicits papers describing novel
research ideas that may be at a relatively early stage of development.
Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Agent-based Systems
Agile System Development
Cloud Computing
Collaboration and Recommender Systems

We invite proposals for demonstrations to be displayed at the Demo
Session that will be organized during the ICDM 2012 conference. Demos
of data mining software that incorporate state-of-the-art techniques,
provide an innovative user interface, and/or allow for fluent
interaction with the user are highly encouraged. Demonstrated software
is not required to be ready for commercial application, as long as it
is of interest to the ICDM community.
A demo is for:
- demonstrating data mining software systems and libraries closely
related to the area of data mining and knowledge discovery;
- showing new technological advances in applying data mining techniques.

ICDM Tutorials
**************
ICDM '12 will host short and long tutorials as well as workshops
that focus on new research directions and initiatives. The tutorials
will be part of the main conference technical program, and are free
of charge to the attendees of the conference. Further, the conference
provides the following support per tutorial: a honorarium of $500 and
one complimentary registration for a tutorial presenter who is not
also a presenting author.
We invite proposals for tutorials from active researchers and
experienced tutors. Ideally, a tutorial will cover the state-of-the-art
research, development and applications in a specific data mining
direction, and stimulate and facilitate future work. A tutorial should
not mainly focus on only the presenter's previous work. Tutorials on
interdisciplinary directions, novel and fast growing directions, and
significant applications are highly encouraged. ICDM will provide an
honorarium for each tutorial. It is possible, depending on actual
conference attendance, that the conference can (partly) support travel
and subsistence expenses for tutorial speakers. Please provide an
estimate for these expenses in your proposal if you are expecting the
conference to cover these expenses for you. We will assume that the
tutorial speakers will be able to cover these expenses from their own
sources if no estimate is included in their proposals.
