*December 15-16, 2012*
Conference Theme: Digital Innovation for Sustainability
Conference URL: http://site.warrington.ufl.edu/wits/

The 22^nd Annual Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems will
be held in Orlando, Florida, on December 15-16, 2012, just prior to the
International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). The purpose of
the workshop is to provide a forum for discussion and interaction among
scholars with research interests in the cutting edge issues of
information technologies and systems. The theme of the conference is
"Digital Innovation for Sustainability*.*"
Sustainability is the capacity of systems to endure over time. Even
though this definition is intended mostly for ecosystems, it obviously
extends to systems created and impacted by humans such as information
systems. Unconstrained human economic development has lead not only to
destruction of delicate ecosystems, but in the end has contributed to
volatile economic cycles and economic damage from natural disasters.
Information technology is both a contributor and a potential solution to
the challenges of managing sustainable development. Better decision
support for public policy planners, businesses and consumers can lead to
better long-term decisions. Examples are numerous and include
inefficiencies in power systems which can be identified by data mining
tools and solutions which can be generated by optimization.
Virtualization, used properly, can reduce the carbon footprint of
existing information systems. Understanding the economic and
environmental impact of information systems, can lead to greater
sustainable adoption, use, and retirement of information systems and
technologies.
Since it is a workshop, WITS actively solicits papers describing novel
research ideas that may be at a relatively early stage of development.
Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Agent-based Systems
Agile System Development
Cloud Computing
Collaboration and Recommender Systems

CALL FOR PAPERS
for the 3rd International ECML/PKDD 2012 Workshop
on
*MINING UBIQUITOUS AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS*
(MUSE 2012)
http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/ws/muse2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The emergence of ubiquitous computing has started to create new
environments consisting of small, heterogeneous, and
distributed devices that foster the social interaction of users
in several dimensions. Additionally, the upcoming social semantic
web also integrates the user interactions in social networking
environments. Mining in ubiquitous and social environments is
thus an emerging area of research focusing on advanced systems
for data mining in such distributed and network-organized
systems. It also integrates some related technologies such as
activity recognition, Web 2.0 mining, privacy issues and
privacy-preserving mining, predicting user behavior, etc.
In typical ubiquitous settings, the mining system can be
implemented inside the small devices and sometimes on central
servers, for real-time applications, similar to common mining
approaches. However, the characteristics of ubiquitous and
social mining are in general quite different from the current
mainstream data mining and machine learning. Unlike in
traditional data mining scenarios, data does not emerge from a
small number of (heterogeneous) data sources, but potentially
from hundreds to millions of different sources. As there is
only minimal coordination, these sources can overlap or diverge
in any possible way. Steps into this new and exciting
application area are the analysis of this new data, the
adaptation of well known data mining and machine learning
algorithms and finally the development of new algorithms.
GOALS AND AUDIENCE
==================
The goal of this workshop is to promote an interdisciplinary
forum for researchers working in the fields of ubiquitous
computing, social semantic web, Web 2.0, and social networks
which are interested in utilizing data mining in an ubiquitous
setting. The workshop seeks for contributions applying
state-of-the-art mining algorithms on ubiquitous and social
data. Papers focusing on the intersection of the two fields are
especially welcome. In short, we want to accelerate the process
of identifying the power of advanced data mining operating on
data collected in ubiquitous and social environments, as well
as the process of advancing data mining through lessons learned
in analyzing these new data.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
==================
The topics of the workshop are split roughly into four areas which
include, but are not limited to the following topics:
Ubiquitous Mining:
* Analysis of data from sensors and mobile devices
* Resource-aware algorithms for distributed mining
* Scalable and distributed classification, prediction, and
clustering algorithms
* Activity recognition
* Mining continuous streams and ubiquitous data
* Online methods for mining temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal data
* Combining data from different sources
* Sensor data preprocessing, transformation, and space-time
sampling techniques
Mining Social Data:
* Analysis of social networks and social media
* Mining techniques for social networks and social media
* Algorithms for inferring semantics and meaning from social data
* Privacy and security issues in social data
* How social data can be used to mine and create collective
intelligence
* Individual and group behavior in social media and social networks
* Social networks for the collaboration of large communities
Ubiquitous and Social Mining
* Personalization and recommendation
* User models and predicting user behavior
* User profiling in ubiquitous and social environments
* Network analysis of social systems
* Discovering social structures and communities
* Analysis of data from crowd-sourcing approaches
Applications:
* Discovering misuse and fraud
* Usage and presentation interfaces for mining and data collection
* Analysis of social and ubiquitous games
* Privacy challenges in ubiquitous and social applications
* Applications of any of the above methods and technologies
We also encourage submissions which relate research results from
other areas to the workshop topics.

IT is about responding to this call. It is an environmental
imperative, and, as many would advocate, our social
responsibility.
Green IT is a topic of growing relevance and significance
due to an increasing recognition of the harmful effects of
climate change, new stringent environmental legislations,
concerns about electronic waste disposal practices that
damage our environment, and corporate image concerns that
are pushing businesses and individuals to go green. We can
make a difference by advancing green IT and embracing it in
several areas of enterprise and personal activities.

Theme
*****
Security and privacy are an indispensable enabler for novel business
networking applications. Examples of such systems include energy
allocation coordinated by smart grids, healthcare services with
electronic records, traffic management with personal sensors, RFID in
retail and logistics, and integration of individuals' social network
information into goods and services. Such adaptive systems are enabled
by recent technological advances, such as standardization of web
services, flexible business process management "in the large",
middleware for distributed computing, or smart objects with their
on-demand orchestration as ICT services.
However, a number of challenges appear on the way to widely adopting
such new business models based upon these technologies and realizing
their sprouting options. The challenges refer particularly to the
construction of secure systems, the runtime control as well as auditing
for adherence with security, compliance, and privacy policies in spite
of the inherent dynamic character of adaptive systems. Furthermore, such
systems are "data-centric" by definition. This causes hitherto
unprecedented extent of data collection and usage conflicting with
security and privacy concerns of users and business partners. Hence,
realizing new business models building upon dynamic business networks
demand sound methods and scalable tools for tackling these security and
privacy challenges.
Topics
******
This special issue calls for original papers on methodologies,
technologies, case-studies and best practices addressing problems of
security and privacy in on-demand, inter-organizational orchestrated ICT
systems for business networks. The special issue very much welcomes
contributions from academia, industry and business practice on the
following non-exhaustive list of topics:
* Best Practices, Methodologies, Cost/Benefit Assessments
* Big Data Analytics
* Business Continuity Plan and Business Continuity Management
* Control Mechanisms and Technologies
* Critical Information Infrastructure Protection
* Dependability and Security
* Distributed Policy Management
* Economics of Control
* Inter-organizational Risk Assessment and Management
* Resilience in Business Networking
* Business Process Management in the Large
* Security Certification and Auditing
* Privacy-aware Business Intelligence
Electronic Markets is a methodologically pluralistic journal.
Quantitative and qualitative research methods are both welcome, as long
as the studies are methodologically sound. Conceptual and
theory-development papers, empirical hypothesis testing, and case-based
studies are all welcome. All papers will be peer reviewed and should
conform to Electronic Markets publication standards.
Submission
**********
Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been

Call for Evaluations and Experiments
http://iswc2012.semanticweb.org/call-evaluations-and-experiments
11th International Semantic Web Conference
http://iswc2012.semanticweb.org/
Boston - USA
November 11-15, 2012
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Semantic Web (and Linked Data) has been an active area of research
for several years. This 11th edition of the International Semantic Web
conference introduces the Evaluations and Experiments Track. Its goal
are to consolidate research material and to gain new scientific
insights and results by providing a place for in-depth experimental
studies of significant scale. It aims at promoting experimental
evaluations in Semantic Web/Linked Data research trying to create a
research cycle between theory and experiments as in other sciences
(e.g., physics). Papers in this track can fit in different categories:
Experimental studies comparing a spectrum of approaches to a
particular problem and, through extensive experiments, providing a
comprehensive perspective on the underlying phenomena or approaches.
Analyses of experimental results providing insights on the nature or
characteristics of studied phenomena, including negative results.
Result verification focusing on verifying or refuting published
results and, through the renewed analysis, help to advance the state
of the art.
Benchmarking, focusing on datasets and algorithms for comprehensible
and systematic evaluation of existing and future systems.
Availability of experimental datasets is highly important (if not compulsory).
In addition, these papers will be more specifically judged on the
basis of their:
Precise description of control experimental conditions
Reproducibility
Applicability range (broad coverage results being better than narrow
applicability).
Special attention will be paid to reproducibility. Hence, experimental
settings will have to be extensively described so that the results
could be independently reproduced and counter-experiments could be
designed.
The experimental approach is based on systematic scientific methods
used in many disciplines. http://www.experiment-resources.com/
provides a good collection of methods, experiment design strategies,
and resources.

First Call for Papers:
R E F S Q ' 1 3 - Requirements Engineering: Foundation for Software Quality
April 8-11 2013, Essen, Germany
Special Theme: Interdisciplinary RE
Abstract Submission: 5th November 2012
Paper Submission: 12th November 2012
http://www.refsq.org
Requirements Engineering (RE) is a dominant factor that influences the
quality of software, systems and services. The REFSQ working conference
series is well established as one of the leading international forums
for discussing RE and its many relations to quality. The first REFSQ
took place in 1994, and since 2010 REFSQ has been organised as a
stand-alone conference. In April 2013, we again welcome participants to
attend REFSQ'13, which will be held in Essen, Germany.
Working Conference Format
REFSQ has a long tradition of being a highly structured and interactive
forum. Each session is organised in order to provoke discussion among
the presenters of papers, pre-assigned discussants, and all the other
participants.
Scope
REFSQ 2013 seeks reports of novel ideas and techniques that enhance the
quality of RE’s products and processes, as well as reflections on
current research and industrial RE practices. We invite submissions on
any aspect of RE. We encourage researchers and practitioners from the
RE, software engineering, information systems, service science, and
embedded systems fields to present original work. We have chosen
“Interdisciplinary RE” as the special theme for REFSQ'13. In addition to
general papers on RE and quality, we therefore encourage submissions
that highlight the interplay of RE with related disciplines such as
software architecture, quality assurance, user interface design, project
management, and agile software development. Contributions from further
related areas such as systems engineering, economics, and management are
also very welcome for the insights they provide to RE.
Call for Papers
We invite original submissions in various categories:
- Full research papers (up to 15 pages), including solution papers,
empirical studies, surveys, and comparative studies
- Experience reports (up to 15 pages), describing positive and negative
experiences
- Vision papers (up to 6 pages) stating where the research in the field
should be heading towards
- Problem statements (up to 6 pages) describing open issues of practical
or theoretical nature
- Research previews (up to 6 pages) reporting research results at an
early stage
Papers must be submitted through Easychair at
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=refsq13
Other Events
REFSQ 2013 also calls for submissions for:
- Half-day workshops focussing on topics related to REFSQ
- A doctoral symposium in which PhD students present their RE-related
research
- Empirical studies to be run during REFSQ and in collaboration with
