Call for Papers
2nd Int’l. Workshop on Empirical Research in Business
Process Management (ER-BPM 2011)
in conjunction with
9th Int'l. Conf. on Business Process Management (BPM 2011)
in Clermont-Ferrand, France
I. Workshop Theme and Goals:
Providing effective IT support for business processes has
become crucial for enterprises to stay competitive in their
market. In response to this need numerous process support
paradigms (e.g., workflow management, service flow
management, case handling), process specification standards
(e.g., WS-BPEL, BPML, BPMN), process tools (e.g., ARIS
Toolset, Tibco Staffware, FLOWer) and supporting methods
have emerged in recent years. Summarized under the term
“Business Process Management” (BPM), these paradigms,
standards, tools, and methods have become a success-critical
instrument for improving process performance.
Research in the area of BPM has traditionally focused on the
development and extension of associated tools, methods,
standards and technologies. However, when evaluating the
suitability of existing BPM technology for a particular
project, it is important for practitioners and academics
alike to have an informed opinion about their qualities and
deficiencies. In particular, the demand for insights or
evaluations of BPM technology based on empirical research
has only recently gained prominence in the community. This
is surprising as the benefits of empirical research have
been demonstrated in areas like software engineering (e.g.,
in the context of software development processes or code
reviews), information systems, or, indeed, business for a
long time. In fact, from the introduction of empirical
research methods such as experimental or case study methods
into BPM (as well as into the development of process-aware
information systems), we expect more valid, quantitative or
qualitative data on the various aspects and effects of BPM
technology. This becomes important, not only for IT
professionals, but also for researchers dealing with
analytical, theoretical or technical challenges in the field
of BPM.
Our ER-BPM’11 workshop addresses this demand and seeks to
stimulate empirical research that, in turn, can contribute
to a better understanding of the problems, challenges and
existing solutions in the BPM field. In particular, the
proposed workshop shall provide an interdisciplinary forum
for both researchers and practitioners to improve the
understanding of BPM-specific requirements, methods and
theories, tools and techniques. Therefore, the ER- BPM’11
workshop will deal with different facets of applying and
using BPM methods and technologies; and it will give new
insights into the challenges, applications, and perspectives
emerging for BPM technology.
II. Relevant topics include but are not limited to:

Call for Papers: BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT (BPM)
[A Minitrack of Organizational Systems and Technology]
Submission date: June 15th 2011
BPM has emerged as an important field in systems science, and in particular in information systems. With its roots in a number of well known approaches such as workflow management, business process reengineering, total quality management, BPM to date stands for an integrated management approach. As such BPM seeks to develop organizational capabilities facilitating excellence and innovation in business addressing a wide range of applications.
The latest research has elicited a wide range of capability areas relevant for BPM, in particular business-related areas, such as strategic alignment and governance as well as the human-related areas such as people and culture. Not limited to well-defined and structured processes, BPM can contribute to a number of contemporary challenges in traditional and creative business environments as well as in different types of organizations including commercial, Cooperatives, non-for-profit and virtual organizations.
The BPM Minitrack at HICSS aims to promote and further establish BPM as an integrated management discipline. While early academic research on BPM was skewed towards the technological and formal aspects of BPM, we particularly encourage papers that deal with the business challenges and opportunities of BPM over its entire life cycle from consideration and adoption to implementation, and on-going improvement at all levels (strategic, operational, tactical).

Chair
-----
Alfredo Cuzzocrea (http://si.deis.unical.it/cuzzocrea/), ICAR-CNR and
University of Calabria, Italy
Aim and Scope
-------------
Distributed Data Mining is well-understood as a resource-intensive and
time-consuming task which is devoted to extract patterns and regularities
from huge amounts of distributed data sets. Classical algorithms, mostly
developed in the context of centralized environments, have already been
proved to be unsuitable to the goal of mining data in distributed settings.
This not only due to conceptual and methodological drawbacks but, most
importantly, to novel challenges posed by a distributed, resource-intensive,
and time-consuming processing as dictated by high-level specifications of
distributed Data Mining algorithms.
> From these challenges, performance aspects of Distributed Data Mining is now
recognized as one of the most attracting topics for the Data Mining research
community, even with respect to next-generation computational platforms
(e.g., Clouds, Grids, SOA Architectures) and paradigms (e.g., Peer-to-Peer,
Map-Reduce, Service-Oriented Computing). Emerging application scenarios like
Social Networks play as well the role of interesting contexts that may
stimulate further investigation in this field.
In Distributed Data Mining models and algorithms, high-performance is not
only an architecture-and-resource--oriented matter, but also it involves in
designing innovative models, algorithms and techniques capable of dealing,
from a side, with the difficulties posed by so-challenging distributed
environments and, from the other side, with the conceptual Data Mining tasks
codified within Distributed Data Mining algorithms, which may turn to be
inherently hard.
With these goals in mind, the special issue "Models and Algorithms for
High-Performance Distributed Data Mining" of JPDC will cover theoretical as
well as practical aspects of high-performance Data Mining in distribute
environments, with emphasis on both sophisticated
theoretical-models-and-methodologies and pragmatic algorithms.
Topics of interest for the special issue include but are not limited to the
following list:
- foundations of high-performance distributed data mining;
- high-performance distributed data mining models;
- high-performance distributed data mining methodologies;
- high-performance distributed data mining techniques;

The Thirteenth International Conference on Electronic Commerce - ICEC 2011
===============================================================
2-5th August 2011, Liverpool, UK
http://www.icec11.org/
Over recent years, developments in the ubiquitous access to the internet
(through mobile consumer devices, digital signage and an explosion of
services) has led to a continued evolution in the way business is
conducted. Advances in social networks have allowed more sophisticated
mechanisms for connecting consumers and goods, whilst increases in
wireless technologies have yielded benefits for the supply chain in
general. The Internet offers unique opportunities for individuals,
businesses and governments to seek new ways of providing novel services
at substantially lower costs.
The International Conference on Electronic Commerce (ICEC) annually
brings together the leaders of the scientific research community in
e-commerce and e-business from all over the world. Having travelled
across the globe from Austria to Taiwan and Hawaii, the conference
returns to Europe, to the historical trading and shipping city of
Liverpool, England. As with previous years, the conference will feature:
•invited keynote presentations
•panels on topical issues on technology, business and public policy
•refereed paper presentations on emerging and continuing research issues
•workshops in several thematic tracks
The theme of ICEC'11 is “Mobile and Pervasive Commerce”. The revolution
in mobile devices, from smart phones that allow constant access to the
network through evolving 3/4G networks, to tablets and eBook readers has
changed the way people consume and exploit data. The notion of pricey,
low volume software has been replaced with high volume, low priced,
instant access apps that can be bought through an online App-store.
Location-awareness and portability has driven a new demand for
context-sensitive apps, and the explosion of entertainment and content
delivery services has facilitated new models of commerce. This
conference aims to facilitate the dialogues among experts in academic
and industries to exchange insights in related issues, and hopefully
boost up research momentum across disciplines to contribute to mobile
and pervasive commerce for the e-commerce community.
