Theme and Topics:
*****************
Graphical representations are commonly used tools in many organizations, ranging form process models to conceptual models and mind maps. They are used to support multiple tasks such as software development, design and engineering, process optimization and reengineering, knowledge explication and transfer as well as marketing, strategic development and cooperation planning. These representations should not only be used by single users for special purposes, but rather to support a wide range of users and organizational issues such as shared understanding of work practices. This accounts for their development and their usage for everyday tasks. However, in practice they are hardly used by or available for non-experts – even if they are created collaboratively they still have little impact on actual work in these processes.
Today, we only know little about the interaction of non-expert users with models, that is, how people can make use of them in practice and interact with them. Supporting such interaction needs insights on means for increasing the usage and availability of models after their creation and on suitable tools and modes of interaction with models for people who are not modeling professionals. Also, there is a lack of knowledge on collaborative development of graphical representations, including processes of cooperation and settings for such development. Fostering the collaborative development of models and including non-expert users into this process needs ways to enable users to contribute actively to creation and maintenance, whether they are co-located or dislocated, synchronous or asynchronous in time or possess different levels of expertise in modeling.
This special issue intends to shed light on the collaborative usage and development of graphical representations such as models. For this, we welcome submissions dealing with theoretical frameworks, empirical and case study research as well as applications in the context of this area. Examples of topics for submissions include, but are not limited to the following:
* Designing means and functionality for user interaction with models and visualizations, e.g. contributing to models (formally and informally) and using them in daily work.
* Supporting work and collaboration with models and visualizations, e.g. communicating about models, using them for learning, reflection, documentation or knowledge transfer as well as collaborative design and engineering.
* Supporting collaborative development of models and visualizations, e.g. tools supporting collaborative modeling in collocated and remote settings, typical settings and roles in collaborative modeling.
* The influence of users on models (e.g. collaborative modeling participants' influence on model outcomes) and the influence of models on users (e.g. users discussing a model and behavior changes)

Boundary Critique and Stakeholder Collaboration in Open Source Software
Migration: A Case Study
Osden Jokonya, University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
Stan Hardman, University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
This paper investigates the contribution of stakeholder collaboration
during an open source software migration using a case study. The case
study is based on the Presidential National Commission, a South African
government department that migrated from proprietary software to open
source software in 2007. The organization was one of the few that
migrated to open source software as part of a South African government
initiative. The case study consisted of semi-structured interviews with
the participants involved in the migration. The interviews centered on
the contribution of stakeholder collaboration during the software
migration using a boundary critique. The results suggest that
stakeholder collaboration can contribute to open source software
migration. From a managerial perspective, business leaders must
understand the value of stakeholder collaboration in open source
software migration. Boundary critique can be an important tool for
achieving broader collaboration of stakeholders.

Telemedicine and Development: Situating Information Technologies in the
Amazon
Gianluca Miscione, University of Twente, The Netherlands
This study is based on an ethnographic study of a telemedicine system
implemented in Northeastern Peru. This system connects a hospital in the
Upper Amazon with health care facilities scattered throughout that area
of the jungle. Patients' transport through the physical nodes of the
public health care system relied on rivers and wooden boats, but voice
and data can now flow directly through channels apart from the existing
health care organization. The time required to reach a doctor might
previously have been the travel distance for different medicines served
as a justification for people not to follow new ways to recovery. After
the implementation of telemedicine, the effectiveness of medical talks
depends on the ability to understand each other. Locally there is no
single health care practice that is believed to be the right one:
patients follow different paths for recovery through traditional and
biomedical treatments. Thus, the diverse social environment affects both
directly and indirectly the use of the telemedicine system, which
evolves accordingly with how public healthcare service is perceived and
used.

When Knowledge Management Drives a Strategic Transformation Project: The
Case of a Brazilian Air Force Organisation
Alexandre Velloso Guimarães, Brazilian Air Force, Brazil
This article introduces and explores the case of a Brazilian Air Force
Organisation, the Aeronautical Economy and Finance Secretariat, which
based on different findings provided by knowledge management (KM)
research, started a broad strategic transformation process to address KM
specific issues while improving organisational performance. The case
description is complemented by theory regarding strategic management
applied to public organisations to underpin the perception that, for
such organisations, not driven by market variables, KM may exert a
positive influence as a trigger to strategic changes rather than other
performance related aspects.

The Dark Side of Technology: Some Sociotechnical Reflections
Elayne Coakes, University of Westminster, UK
Antony Bryant, Leeds Metropoltan University, UK
Frank Land, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK
Andy Phippen, University of Plymouth, UK
In 2010 Jeff Baker proposed a panel for the 2010 ICIS Conference in St.
Louis on the topic " Technologies that Transform Business and Research:
Lessons from the Past as we look into the Future? (Baker et al., 2011),
He invited Frank Land to be a member of the panel. Frank sought to
explore some topics that were receiving a great deal of attention from
the media and in particular the computer press as well amongst IS
practitioners, management and academia. The topic was the apparently
rapidly growing threat coming from the misuse or criminal use of
information and communications technology (ICT) as well as the use of
the technology in warfare (Cyberwarfare). The issues were discussed
under a variety of labels but usually included terms such as security,
privacy, risk and piracy.

===========================================
Track Description:
===============
Business intelligence (BI) and knowledge management (KM) contribute
significantly to an organisationâ??s competitiveness and sustainable
development. Both domains provide means to leverage organisational
information and knowledge assets for efficient and effective decision
making. The underlying BI and KM agendas are nothing less than to
deliver decision support for sustainable economic development, which is
an important prerequisite for the global welfare. In order to provide
enduring value, the decision makers must rely on consolidated and
high-quality information as well as on a current and context-rich
knowledge base that are correlated with the organisational setting and
environment.
Consequently, BI and KM meanwhile represent an essential component of
the enterprise application landscape. BI is a broad category of
technologies, applications, and processes to support data analysis and
decision making in organisations and across organisational boundaries.
Complementary, KM focuses on capturing the right knowledge, providing it
to the right user, and using this knowledge to improve organisational
and/or individual performance. Although addressed by research for a long
time, both domains are still evolving. For example, new applications,
innovative technologies, and increasing maturity of BI and KM solutions
demand for adequate methodological and technical advice as well as for
the performance measurement of organisational application.
This track aims to promote contributions dealing with a managerial, an
economic, a methodological or a technical perspective on BI and KM.
Submissions based on theoretical research, design research, action
research, or behavioural research are encouraged. We welcome both full
research papers and research in progress papers.
Selected papers will be considered for fast-track publication in a
special issue of the International Journal of Business Intelligence
Research (IJBIR).
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
=======================================
* Support for mature BI and KM solutions: BI/KM governance, BI/KM
strategies, BI/KM maturity models, BI/KM success factors, and BI/KM
performance
* Emerging trends in BI: pervasive BI, BI 2.0 (social media and BI), and
mobile BI
* Real time data warehousing und operational BI
* Applications of BI, such as customer relationship management and
business performance management
* Data warehousing and data integration
* Predictive and advanced analytics, and data visualisation

2nd Workshop on Latest Advances in Scalable Algorithms
for Large-Scale Systems (ScalA)
held in conjunction with the
24th IEEE/ACM International Conference on High Performance
Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC) 2011
November 14, 2011, Seattle, WA, USA
<http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Scala/2011/>
Novel scalable scientific algorithms are needed in order to enable key
science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale
systems. This is especially true for the current tier of leading
petascale machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems
continue to scale up in compute node and processor core count. These
extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide
network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication
overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points.
Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need
to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of
faults increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at
the algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with
the advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard
processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these
architectures to extract the most performance. This includes different
system-specific levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of
computation. Scientific key science applications require novel
mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and
resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale
HPC systems.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel scientific algorithms that improve performance,
scalability, resilience and power efficiency
- Porting scientific algorithms and applications to
many-core and heterogeneous architectures
- Performance and resilience limitations of scientific
algorithms and applications at scale
- Crosscutting approaches (system software and
applications) in addressing scalability challenges
- Scientific algorithms that can exploit extreme
concurrency (e.g. 1 billion for exascale by 2018)
- Naturally fault tolerant, self-healing or fault
oblivious scientific algorithms
- Programming model and system software support for
algorithm scalability and resilience
