Subject: [AISWorld] Call for Papers: Special Issue on *User
Participation/Centeredness in New, Challenging IS Contexts*
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 2010 13:12:05 +0200
From: Horst Treiblmaier <horst.treiblmaier(a)gmail.com>

*
Call for Papers: Special Issue on *User
Participation/Centeredness in
New, Challenging IS Contexts*
AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction
<http://aisel.aisnet.org/thci>
*
User participation has been a central topic for decades, but
it is about
time to revisit it because the previous findings might not
fit the new
IS contexts we face today (Markus & Mao 2004). Outsourcing
or purchasing
of off-the-shelf software has isolated users from
developers. Problems
are also introduced with web-based and mobile solutions with
large and
geographically scattered user bases. In addition, systems
may nowadays
be designed for consumers, who may use them during domestic
life and
leisure activities. Selecting and contacting these users may be
challenging. The user population has also widened to include
new groups
of people with varying ages, education, and interests (e.g.
children,
Druin 2002). Furthermore, new development approaches, such
as open
source and end-user software development require
reconsidering the
concept of user participation (e.g. Barcellini et al. 2008,
Syrjänen
2007). Another recent trend has been to hire or rely on
different kinds
of intermediaries to 'represent the users' in the
development process
(Cooper & Bowers 1995): e.g. usability or
user-centered/interaction/user
experience design specialists, ethnographers or change
agents (e.g.
Iivari et al. 2009, Karasti 2001, Markus & Mao 2004).
It has also been acknowledged that there are many
controversies and
ambiguities in the literature regarding what is meant by user
participation or user centeredness. Usability engineering,
user-centered
design, interaction design and user experience design are
recent
approaches for ensuring user focus. Generally, there is a
multitude of
approaches to rely on, and clear differences related to both
the motives
and the practical means suggested (e.g. Iivari & Iivari, in
press). The
motives may range from achieving workplace democracy to work
intensification and profit maximization (e.g. Asaro 2000,
Spinuzzi
2002). The users may be allowed to have decision-making
power regarding
solutions, but they may also be permitted only to provide
background
information or feedback to the already-made decisions (e.g.
Damodaran
1996, Iivari 2006, Keinonen 2009).
This special issue aims to attract conceptual, theoretical
and empirical
papers, with a focus on reconceptualizing user
participation/centeredness, on understanding the challenges and
opportunities of these new IS contexts or on ways of
enhancing and
fostering user participation/centeredness in these contexts,
for example:
- User-centered design/user participation in
outsourced/offshore/application package based IS development
- IS development for/with groups with special needs (for
instance,
children or the elderly)
- IS development for users with disparate skill levels
- Practices and challenges involved with 'representing the
users' in IS
development
- User-centered design/user participation in open source
software
development
- User-centered design/user participation and end user
development
- The role/importance of intermediaries in user-centered
design/user
participation
- User-centered design/user participation in
mobile/web-based/ubiquitous
environments

Subject: [computational.science] Reminder: Call for Chapter
Proposals (Due Sept. 15)
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2010 10:31:55 -0400
From: George Yee <gmyee(a)sce.carleton.ca>
Organization: "ICCSA"
To: Computational Science Mailing List
<computational.science(a)lists.iccsa.org>
Dear Colleague,
Greetings! I would like to invite you to submit a chapter proposal to a new book I am editing, entitled "Privacy Protection Measures and Technologies in Business Organizations: Aspects and Standards", assuming this topic lies within your work area. The due date for the proposal is September 15, 2010. For more details, please see the Call for Chapter Proposals at:
http://www.igi-global.com/AuthorsEditors/AuthorEditorResources/CallForBookC…
Here are some excerpts from the above site:
Introduction
The recent rapid growth of the Internet, together with increases in computerization, has been accompanied by soaring deployments of client-related business applications. Since business ultimately depends on the consumption of people, this has led to more and more consumer personal information in the possession of business organizations. This in turn has led to concerns over potential violations of consumer privacy. In response, various governmental jurisdictions have enacted privacy legislation to protect the privacy of consumers. However, legislation alone is not enough. Protective foolproof measures must be in place to guard against potential invasions of privacy. For example, business communication and collaboration include content sharing and email. How can these be safeguarded against the leakage of consumer personal information? As another example, internal business systems comprise workflows that handle and process client personal information. What measures are needed to avoid inadvertently and illegally revealing this information? What standards can be followed to reduce this risk?
Objective of the Book
This book will aim to deliver a coherent collection of chapters that provide significant new insights from five areas of investigation, as follows: 1) the current legal framework concerning the protection of consumer privacy in business organizations, 2) the nature and identification of consumer private information, 3) the measures and standards that can be applied and integrated within business organizations to protect consumer privacy, 4) the integration of business structures and workflows with privacy protection measures, and 5) the impacts of applying and integrating privacy protection measures on business operational and financial performance. Although theoretical and conceptual studies are equally welcome, the likely practical implications of your research should be emphasized in all contributions.
Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before September 15, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal (outline) clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Please email submissions (Word document) to: gmyee(a)sce.carleton.ca. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by September 22, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected by November 30, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed between authors on a double-blind review basis.
Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to receiving your proposal.
Sincerely,
George

GameSec conference aims to bring together researchers who aim to
establish a theoretical foundation for making resource
allocation decisions that balance available capabilities and
perceived security risks in a principled manner. The conference
focuses analytical models based on game, information,
communication, optimization, decision, and control theories that
are applied to diverse security topics. At the same time, the
connection between theoretical models and real world security
problems are emphasized to establish the important feedback
loop between theory and practice. Observing the scarcity of
venues for researchers who try to develop a deeper theoretical
understanding of the underlying incentive and resource allocation
issues in security, we believe that GameSec will fill an
important void and serve as a distinguished forum of highest
standards for years to come.

Importante dates:
-----------------
- Draft papers should be submitted by October 20, 2010
- Authors will receive the acceptance notification by November 18, 2010
- Final papers for presentation should be sent before December 07, 2010
Aims and Scope:
---------------
The positioning techniques and navigation systems are understood as
any solution that can place, locate or produce information and
geographical coordinates of a person, vehicle, property or other
items, particularly on the occasion of their mobility, displacement or
movement. In recent years, there has been growing interest in location
based services and navigation systems. However, the developing
research in this area has some limitations in the composition,
collaboration, cooperation and synchronization between different
services. The interoperability and resource sharing between services
of different domains are primordial tasks in discovering services and
in sequencing of the interactions between them.
The fourth edition of the workshop SCLP?11 will emphasize positioning
techniques and system navigation for interaction and interoperability
of services including web services, services operation and management,
mathematical and formal methods for specification, modeling,
verification and validation of scenarios and applications.
This workshop aims to provide a forum in which to focus on location
based services and positioning techniques, methods, concepts, models,
languages and tools that enable the design and development of
practical applications in the context of navigation systems. It aims
to bring together researchers, students and professionals from
Software Engineering area, Software architecture area and Mobile
services Computing area to reach a better understanding of the
relationships between them and promote their research efforts.
List of topics:
