Subject: CFP - Society and Informatics
Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2010 21:26:56 -0400
From: WMSCI 2011 <wmsci(a)mail.2011iiisconferences.org>
To: <GUSTAF.NEUMANN(a)WU-WIEN.AC.AT>
Dear G. Neumann:
We invite you to submit a paper/abstract (especially in the area of Society and Informatics or any other area of your interest) to The 15th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics: WMSCI 2011, to be held in Orlando, Florida, USA, on July 19th - July 22nd, 2011 (www.2011iiisconferences.org/wmsci)
If you have any colleagues who might be interested in making a submission to the conference, please feel free to forward this e-mail to them.
Below are the next deadlines for WMSCI 2011 (Check the web site for possible extensions or new set of deadlines):
Papers/Abstracts Submission and Invited Session Proposals: October 6th, 2010
Authors Notifications: November 29th, 2010
Camera-ready, full papers: February 28th, 2011
Technical keynote speakers will be selected from early submissions because this selection requires an additional evaluation according to the quality of the paper, assessed by its reviewers, the authors' CV and the paper's topic.
Submissions for Face-to-Face or for Virtual Participation are both accepted. Both kinds of submissions will have the same reviewing process and the accepted papers will be included in the same proceedings.
All Submitted papers/abstracts will go through three reviewing processes: (1) double-blind (at least three reviewers), (2) non-blind, and (3) participative peer reviews. These three kinds of review will support the selection process of those papers/abstracts that will be accepted for their presentation at the conference, as well as those to be selected for their publication in JSCI Journal.
Pre-Conference and Post-conference Virtual sessions (via electronic forums) will be held for each session included in the conference program, so that sessions papers can be read before the conference, and authors presenting at the same session can interact during one week before and after the conference. Authors can also participate in peer-to-peer reviewing in virtual sessions.
Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers/abstracts, so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors will not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.
Registration fees of an effective invited session organizer will be waived according to the policy described in the web page (click on "Invited Session", then on "Benefits for the Organizers of Invited Sessions"), where you can get information about the ten benefits for an invited session organizer. For Invited Sessions Proposals, please visit the conference web site, or directly to http://www.2011iiisconferences.org/wmsci/organizer.asp
Authors of the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference (included those virtually presented) will be invited to adapt their papers for their publication in the Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics.
Best regards,
WMSCI 2011 Organizing Committee

Doctoral Research Roundtable
The Ninth Annual SIG IS Cognitive Research Exchange Workshop
Sunday, December 12, 2010 (Pre-ICIS)
St. Louis, Missouri
CALL FOR DOCTORAL STUDENT RESEARCH PROPOSALS
Submission Deadline: September 28, 2010
The organizing committee for the SIG IS Cognitive Research Exchange
(IS-CoRE) Workshop invites doctoral students to submit research
proposals for its Ninth Annual meeting. Like other papers in the
workshop, proposals should address human cognition (i.e., how we know
things, through processes such as reasoning, perception, and judgment)
in an IS context. Doctoral research proposals will be discussed in a
special portion of the workshop, the format of which will depend on the
number of proposals accepted. Discussions are expected to be open and
constructive, in a spirit of collegial community-building. A discounted
rate for attendance will be extended to these students (e.g., early
student registration is $70).
IS-CoRE is intended to represent and support researchers in information
systems who view understanding human cognition as a critical component
to the successful design and implementation of information systems.
Accordingly, doctoral research proposals should address IS research
questions using theories and methods from the cognitive and
psychological sciences. There is a wide range of diverse topics from
which these questions can come. These include, but are not limited to:
* Situated, shared, social, distributed, and team cognition
* Cognition in Virtual Worlds
* Collaborative work
* Group and individual decision support systems
* Group and individual group problem-finding, problem-solving
* Cognitive perspectives on human or computer-mediated
knowledge-sharing
* Cognitive perspectives on decision processes
* Cognitive perspectives on knowledge management
* Cognitive perspectives on the design or use of information systems
* Cognitive processes of programmers/systems developers
* Cognitive aspects of learning and innovation
* Creativity and creative cognition
* Design of user learning and training interventions
* Human factors in information environments
* Human-computer interaction or human factors perspectives involving
cognition or perception
* Research methods to investigate cognitive issues in IS
Authors of accepted proposals will be notified of the format decision
in their acceptance letters. Regardless of format, doctoral students
will receive feedback from IS-CoRE members and workshop attendees. In
prior years, students have found this portion of the workshop to be very
helpful.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Doctoral students should limit their proposals to about 5,000 words,
including tables, figures, and references. They must also include an
abstract not exceeding 300 words. Papers are to be submitted
electronically to rotondo(a)cobilan.msstate.edu with the subject line
"CORE Submission-PhD Proposal".
Before submitting manuscripts, please format papers so that:
(1) the first page contains only the paper title, the subtitle
“Doctoral Student Research Proposal,” author names, affiliations,
and e-mail addresses
(2) the second page contains only the paper title, the subtitle
“Doctoral Student Research Proposal,” and abstract, but no author
names
(3) identifying information is removed from the file properties
(4) all comments are removed and changes are accepted (if necessary)
Papers may be submitted in Word, WordPerfect, or Acrobat formats. If
submitting in Acrobat, please submit the title page with author
information separately.
WORKSHOP FORMAT
For more information about the workshop and IS-CoRE, please see our Web
site at http://www.ou.edu/is-core/.
EXTENDED ABSTRACTS
This workshop is a forum to present and discuss papers and to help
authors publish their papers in top academic journals. In order to
prevent copyright issues for subsequent publication, doctoral students
can, if they wish, submit an extended abstract which will be distributed
at the workshop and made available on the SIG website. The purpose of
this extended abstract is to highlight key aspects of the proposal
presented for discussion. The abstract should include a synthesis of the
theoretical background. Depending on the student’s progress, the
abstract can also include proposed methods and findings. The extended
abstract should not exceed 2 pages of single-spaced text including any
tables, figures and references.

view understanding human cognition as a critical component to the
successful design and implementation of information systems. As such,
the questions of interest that are relevant to this SIG group focus on
IS problems in terms of the process of knowing. There is a wide range of
diverse topics from which these questions can come. These include, but
are not limited to, the ones listed below.
* Situated, shared, social, distributed, and team cognition
* Cognition in Virtual Worlds
* Collaborative work
* Group and individual decision support systems
* Group and individual group problem-finding, problem-solving
* Cognitive perspectives on human or computer-mediated

Individuals interested in submitting a proposal and being a
Guest Editor for a special issue of JISE should submit a
proposal, in the form of an e-mail, to S. E. Kruck
(editor(a)jise.org <mailto:editor@jise.org>) that includes the
following:
1. The proposed topic. Please provide a short statement that
describes why this would be a good topic for a JISE Special
Issue.
2. Who would be the Guest Editor(s). We encourage
collaboration among two or three Guest Editors. If there is
more than one Guest Editor, we encourage one of the Guest
Editors to reside outside the US. Please provide a short
resume for each Guest Editor that highlights IS teaching, IS
education-related publications, and editorial experience
(reviewing, Assistant Editor experience, etc.). The
publication record and editorial experience of the proposed
Special Issue Guest Editor(s) will be considered when
evaluating proposals.
3. How you would accomplish the review process. If your
proposal for the Special Issue is approved, the Guest
Editor(s) for the Special Issue must recruit individuals
willing to help review papers submitted for the Special

reviews to ensure that it meets our high quality standards
before publishing.
4. A brief statement describing how you would solicit papers
for the Special issue (AISWORLD announcement, personal
solicitations, etc.). The Call for Papers (CFP) will appear
in two issues of JISE at a minimum. The CFP will also be
posted on the JISE website (http://jise.org/).
The Special Issue Guest Editor(s) may not be an author or
co-author on any paper submitted paper for the Special
Issue, except for a short article introducing the special
issue. Special Issue topics must be congruent with the
mission of JISE and be a topic that will generate sufficient
interest and quality submissions from the community.
Please send any questions or e-mail your proposal for a
Special Issue to editor(a)jise.org <mailto:editor@jise.org> or

PROTOTYPES DEMOS AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY**
TWENTIETH WORKSHOP ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES AND SYSTEMS
(WITS'10)**
DECEMBER 11–12, 2010, St. Louis, Missouri - USA ---
**http://apps.business.ualberta.ca/wits/*
*
*
*INTRODUCTION*
The objective of the prototype demo and instructional
technology sessions is to bring together well-developed
ideas, which can assist the MIS community at large, in their
quest to improve the business orientation of their IT
curricula, or help demonstrate their teaching and research.
We solicit submissions of instructional or prototype modules
that demonstrate innovative integration of technology with
business/management teaching or research.
*REQUIREMENTS*
_The instruction modules should adhere to the following
requirements:_
· Entire exercise should be deliverable in 60 to 90 minutes.
· Clearly define the learning objectives of the exercise.
The learning objectives could be:
o Technically focused (e.g., using threading in
object-oriented programming, triggers in databases)
o Analysis/design focused (e.g., requirements analysis for
database design, security policy design, systems development)
o Business problem-solving focused (e.g., insurance policy
pricing for data security, data mining in marketing,
financial analytics)
· List the target audience (undergraduate/graduate) and
pre-requisite knowledge for undertaking the exercises, both
business fundamentals as well as technical proficiency.
Examples include:
o Students should be familiar with basic concepts of supply
chain and have working knowledge of SQL.
o Students should be intimately familiar with statistics,
specifically ANOVA.
· Present a well-defined business problem which provides the
context as well as the requirements for the IT-driven
solution. The business problem can be identified from
existing practices (e.g., remote data/call center
management, outsourcing/off-shoring of services, system
integration problems), available case studies (e.g. HBSP,
Ivey) or mini-cases available from several sources (e.g.
CIO.com, textbooks). The domain(s) of the business problem
should be clearly identified using one or more standard
keywords such as supply-chain, e-commerce, business
intelligence, information security.
· Contain a hands-on IT skills component, which is to be
undertaken by the student either individually or in a
collaborative environment. The requisite IT component(s)
should be clearly defined. These requirements could be a
combination of:
o Specific technology platforms such as MS Access and Excel,
Visual Basic .Net or Oracle 10g, WebSphere or SAP
o Generic technological requirements such as Object-oriented
programming language, Database, Open platform which allows
for inducting decision tree using C4.5 or equivalent algorithm
· A “Teaching Note” with a suggested process outline for
lessons delivery for the instructor adopting the case for
in-class instruction. The teaching note should also clearly
separate what portions (if any) need to be completed before
class and after the class.
· The submission should contain a 1-page description that
will be included in WITS proceedings. Please include the
title, author names and affiliations. Please make your
submission using a Word or PDF file (1 page). Typesetting
requirements are: an 8.5" x 11" size (letter) page with a 1"
margin on all sides, and Times New Roman size 12 font.
_The prototype demonstration modules should adhere to the
following requirements:_
· We actively solicit prototypes describing novel research
ideas that may be at a relatively early stage of
development. Research topics include (but are not limited
to) any topics mentioned in the WITS call for papers
(http://apps.business.ualberta.ca/wits/).
· The initial submission should contain the description of
your prototype system and related research, and a URL for
your prototype if available. Please include the research
title, author names and affiliations. Please make your
submission using a Word or PDF file (1 page). Typesetting
requirements are: an 8.5" x 11" size (letter) page with a 1"
margin on all sides, and Times New Roman size 12 font. Upon
acceptance, the 1-page description will be included in WITS
proceedings, and the authors will be asked to prepare
materials for a poster board to be presented at WITS.
· Accepted prototypes must be developed as posters. That is,
audience would benefit from and understand the demo by
reading poster (maximum 2 large poster-boards). We encourage
the following points to be covered in the poster-board
synopsis: goal(s) of the demo/prototype; links to relevant
materials or research papers (need not be your own papers);
brief description of the main functions of the system;
description of intended (or current) impact of use on
practice/teaching/research; screen shots of the prototypes.
The prototype presenters are welcome to provide any
additional information to WITS participants via handouts.
Technology is encouraged to be demonstrated on your laptop
in the poster room or hallway.
*SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS*
The submission should be made in a single word/PDF file and
contain all of the above information.
