Dear AISWorld Community,
I found myself on a new committee this year and hope that many of you can
help. Our school is examining options in Experience-Based learning
(defined below) and one early step is to determine what other schools are
doing.
As always, I will provide a summary of the results. We appreciate any and
all responses to this one-page survey instrument. The next at the bottom
simply submits the results and provides a thank you message. I am only
asking that you fill it out but if you want to distribute this to some
colleagues in other departments I would not complain at all!
http://katz.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_3PFr6sHH2I5hw3i&SVID=Prod
Definition: Experience-Based Learning (EBL) represents learning where
students (1) are placed in a situation that resembles or is an actual work
environment; (2) think and feel like the firm's stakeolders while acting
in their best interests; (3) learn by doing as opposed to passively; and
(4) internalize the organization's issues and processes (as opposed to
only identifying with them). We expect that most respondents will be from
business schools, however, novel ideas might emerge from other schools
such as engineering, medicine, law, and liberal arts.
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Dennis Galletta

CALL FOR PAPERS: AMCIS 2009 Minitrack on "BPM AND INNOVATION"
15th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), San
Francisco, California, August 6 - 9, 2009
========================================================
Minitrack: BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT AND INNOVATION
Track: Strategic Use of IT
========================================================
Over the past 15 years attitudes toward business processes have
changed significantly within organizations. What started with Total
Quality Management initiatives and continued through Business Process
Reengineering (BPR) projects of the early1990s has evolved into a
comprehensive management practice that permeates both the business and
the technology side of organizations. Business Process Management
(BPM) can be defined as methods and tools surrounding the definition,
implementation, and improvement of lateral processes in organizations.
BPM tools and techniques play a significant role in both intra-
organizational and inter-organizational process design. As BPM
continues to gain importance in todayís organization, an increasing
number of studies detail efficiency, effectiveness and agility
improvements resulting from process management initiatives. Innovative
industrial implementations and applications of BPM methods and
techniques are of much interest today, given their potential for
bringing significant gains to the enterprise through the automated
coordination of activities, process participants and the integration
of applications. This mini-track seeks contributions that discuss the
management of business processes as well as technologies for process
automation. We encourage submissions from both a managerial as well as
a technical perspective.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
-- Business process automation and workflow management systems
-- Business process and rule modeling, languages and design patterns
-- Strategies for business process design and innovation
-- Service-oriented architectures for BPM
-- Resource management and capacity planning in BPM
-- Information security and assurance in BPM
-- Business process monitoring and controlling
-- Process mining and its applications
-- Business process governance, risk and compliance management
-- Management of adaptive and flexible processes
-- Management of ad-hoc and collaboration processes
-- Management of knowledge-intensive processes
-- Formal evaluation of BPM methods and technologies
-- BPM adoption and critical success factors
-- BPM maturity
-- Standardization of BPM, web services and workflow technology
-- Industry case studies on BPM technology or BPM applications
--- Submission Process ---
Full paper submissions must be made electronically through the AMCIS
Manuscript Central submission system, by February 20th 2009. Papers
should not exceed 5,000 words. Paper format may be found at: http://www.business.mcmaster.ca/amcis2008/documents/amcis2008_paper_templat…

CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Workshop on the Economics of Knowledge-based Technologies (ECONOM
2009)
in conjunction with
12th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2009)

http://bis.kie.ae.poznan.pl/12th_bis/wscfp.php?ws=econom2009
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deadline for submissions: February 1, 2009
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knowledge-based technologies use machine-understandable formalizations
of expert knowledge to realize scalable, robust and economically
feasible approaches and to support knowledge management, information
integration or intelligent search. In order to encourage the wide
industrial uptake of knowledge-based technologies, instruments to assess
potential economic benefits of these technologies and to predict the
total costs of their development and deployment are a must.
CIOs are starting to acknowledge the technical value of knowledge-based
technologies for enterprises. In the last years early adopters have been
increasingly using them in various application settings ranging from
content management to enterprise integration platforms. Core
technological building blocks and development platforms are meanwhile
available from established vendors. Despite this promising position, it
is still difficult to argue in favor of knowledge-based technologies in
front of the CFOs because of the lack of convincing measurable benefits
or of proven-and-tested methods to determine and quantify these.
This workshop addresses economic aspects of knowledge-based
technologies. This includes the assessment of their potential business
value, more precisely the costs and benefits of their application, and
qualitative and quantitative methods therefor. We are interested in
original research looking into the aforementioned aspects for both
knowledge-based systems and knowledge structures (i.e., ontologies,
taxonomies, folksonomies) supporting these systems.
The goal of the workshop is to provide a communication platform for
researchers to discuss ideas and results and to identify new challenges
in the areas of economics and knowledge-based technologies. The workshop
is also intended to be a networking event for participants from the
industry willing to share their experiences on the adoption of
knowledge-based technologies in enterprises.

CALL FOR PAPERS
15th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2009 -
http://amcis2009.org/)
San Francisco, California, August 6 - 9, 2009 (Thursday-Sunday)
TRACK: INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS (SIGABIS)
http://amcis2009.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=121&Itemi…
Complete Papers Due: February 20, 2009
The purpose of this track is to provide a forum for academics and
practitioners to identify and explore the issues, opportunities, and
solutions related to intelligent systems design, implementation,

A brief description of each of the mini-tracks is given below.
Mini-Track: Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining
===================================================
Riyaz T. Sikora (co-chair SIGABIS)
University of Texas at Arlington
One of the side effects of the increase in connectivity and collaboration
has been the phenomenal increase in the magnitude and volatility of the
available data. Intelligent methods are now emerging as a way to deal with
this staggering variety and volume of data in distributed and
heterogeneous environments. This has become especially relevant since most
large-scale information systems applications of today assume that
components will be added dynamically and that they will be autonomous
(serve different users or providers and fulfill different goals) and
heterogeneous (be built in different ways).
The mini-track on AI and DM provides a forum to bring together like-minded
researchers, teachers, and practitioners to advance this important field.
The AI/DM mini-track will seek research and applications highlighting the
frontiers of new knowledge and advances in AI and DM. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Foundations of AI and DM
* Machine Learning and Statistical Learning Algorithms
* Data Mining
* Pattern Recognition
* Intelligent Agents
* Heuristic Search
* Intelligent Information Retrieval
* Support Vector Machines
* Web/Text mining
* Intelligent Search Techniques
* Reinforcement Learning
Mini-Track: Grid Computing
==========================
Manish Agrawal
University of South Florida
Grid computing potentially creates enormous processing power dedicated to
large computing-intensive tasks. Common uses of grid computing include
computer aided design, drug discovery, back-office data processing,
information services, and other interesting academic and social problems
such as the search for extra-terrestrial life. The emergence of grid
computing has led to research questions including the generalizability of
grid computing solutions, information privacy and assurance on the grid,
and problem decomposition. The purpose of this mini-track is to provide a
forum for researchers and practitioners to explore these and other
problems, ideas, experiences, and solutions on grid computing.
Potential topics (not limited to):
* Grid architectures
* Grid applications
* Information services on grids
* Grid application workflows
* Privacy on grid hosts
* Heterogeneity on the grid

Mini-Track: Intelligent Agent and Multi-Agent Systems
=====================================================
Vijayan Sugumaran, Oakland University
Stefan Kirn, Universität Hohenheim
While research on intelligent agent and multi-agent systems have
progressed, there are still a number of issues that have to be explored in
terms of agent design, implementation, integration, and deployment. For
example, salient characteristics of agents in different domains, formal
approaches for agent-oriented modeling, designing and implementing
agent-oriented information systems, agent collaboration and coordination
in multi-agent systems, and organizational impact of agent-based systems
are some of the areas in need of further research.
Possible Topics (but not limited to):
* Intelligent Applications in Business
* Distributed Intelligent Systems
* Agent architectures and behavior models
* Models and architectures for agent-oriented information systems
* Agent-oriented software engineering
* Multi-agent systems and applications
* Agent collaboration, and coordination
* Human and agent interaction models
* Agent-based process and workflow systems
* Agents and knowledge management
* Agent-based simulation

CALL FOR PAPERS
15th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2009)
San Francisco, California, August 6 - 9, 2009 (Thursday-Sunday)
San Francisco Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sfodt-san-francisco-marriott/)
Track: Enterprise Systems (SIGEntSys)
Minitrack: Enterprise Systems Adoption and Business Models
Complete Papers Due: February 20, 2009
Enterprise systems (ES), which are complex software packages designed for integrating data flow and processes across an entire company and beyond, emerged as a result of evolution from MRP, MRP II and ERP systems. Stepwise, the evolving systems integrate more and more areas of the company's operation and presently they extend over the organizational boundaries and support inter-organizational activities. Currently, ES are expected to be key enablers of modern organizations that operate in a dynamic and turbulent business environment, experience the consequences of globalization, face mergers and takeovers, and may take part in various business alliances.
Frequently, the adoption of an ES is an enormous challenge for an organization which stems from the system complexity, organizational context and people involved in the implementation project. Usually, ES adoption is a long and multi-stage process during which various problems and complications may occur. Moreover, the ES adoption projects typically involve a great number of stakeholders who represent different company departments, various organizational hierarchies, and often external companies operating in various industries. These stakeholders may have conflicting interests and their own definition of project success. Overall, ES implementation projects tend to be very unique and challenging endeavors.
Moreover, the challenges related to the adoption of ES are not limited to the organizations that embrace this technology, but also face the system providers as well. Shorter product lifecycles, combined with the attempts of many organizations to cut their costs, make revenues from initial licensing and maintenance of the systems more erratic and less predictable. In addition, the current trends to open-source software and "Software as a Service" contracts offered by third parties affect substantially the traditional revenue streams of the ES providers. Thus, to remain competitive and prosper in the future, many ES providers must revise their existing strategies and devise new business models.
This mini-track invites papers that examine various aspects related to the determinants of ES success and related business models. Both empirical and theoretical papers are invited. The general research questions addressed in this mini-track can be formulated as follows: what are the mechanisms determining successful ES adoption? What kind of business models exist for companies providing ES?
Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to:
* motivation and justification for ES adoption,
* alignment between ES and adopting organization,
* barriers and impediments to ES adoption success,
* risk factors in ES adoption,
* critical failure factors for ES adoption,
* critical success factors for ES adoption,
* ES implementation and change management
* understanding of ES adoption success,
* benchmarking of ES projects and ES project management,
* multi-cultural and multi-national issues,
* multiple stakeholder perspective in ES adoption and use,
* business model frameworks,
* impact of new trends within the software industry on business models,
* business model innovation for standard software companies,
* implications of shorter product lifecycles on business models,
* "Software as a Service" related business models,
* open-source software related business models.
