Call for Papers
IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering
A Special Issue on
Customer Relationship Management: Data Mining Meets Marketing
Planned for: Early 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------
Customer Relationship Management emerged in the last decade
to reflect the central role of customers for the strategic
positioning of a company. CRM encompasses all measures to
achieve customer understanding and to exploit this knowledge
in marketing and production. Accordingly, it requires
integration of customer-related data, meta-data and
background knowledge, to provide a coordinated analysis of
this integrated data.
Central to CRM are the correct and complete understanding of
the customers and derivation of concerted actions from this
understanding. Traditionally, Knowledge and Data Engineering
is observed as a key enabler for CRM, delivering knowledge
discovery methods for customer profiling, classification,
segmentation and response prediction scalable technologies
for processing of large customer bases and of streams of
customer transaction data methodologies for the integration
of heterogeneous collections of data at different levels of
abstraction and with varying degrees of internal structure
tools and standards for the specification of meta-information
and methods for the incorporation of meta-data into the
knowledge discovery process frameworks for the formulation of
recommendations and the design of personalized services,
especially in e-commerce applications.
However, many of these contributions focus on isolated CRM
problems, the emphasis being more on the discovery of correct
patterns than on obtaining deep insights into customer
behaviour. Some of the challenges that are still open today
include the integrated analysis of customer data and texts
(e.g., product descriptions and customer feedback),
incorporation of extracted knowledge into the production and
marketing cycle, incorporation of various types of background
knowledge into the analysis, and systematic re-evaluation of
extracted knowledge against drifting customer preferences and
profiles.
In this special issue, we solicit submissions describing
innovative Knowledge and Data Engineering methods for CRM
challenges, with a particular focus on the areas of knowledge
discovery and data/text mining, of data warehousing and
advanced database technologies. We particularly encourage
contributions that take a holistic and integrated view of the
customers, their static data, their implicit and explicit
preferences, and their behaviour across various interaction
channels.
To reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the CRM field, we
encourage all authors to place their contributions into a
broader, customer-centered framework and explain how their
work helps to solve complex and integrated CRM problems and
how it considers demands from and provides insights to other
disciplines, such as marketing.

OVERVIEW
--------
Due to recent technological advances, it has become possible to integrate
sensor and actuator technologies as well as wireless communication in
everyday objects and environments. These developments open up a huge amount
of innovative interaction scenarios, involving new forms of user interfaces.
One kind that enables intuitive and natural interaction is tangible user
interfaces, referring to interfaces in which persons interact with digital
information through the physical environment. Tangible user interfaces are
not limited to the interactions of a single person, but can be used to
support interaction within - even dislocated - groups and smart artefacts.
Motivated by these developments, we see this workshop as an opportunity for
exploring the potentials and perspectives of tangible interaction for
supporting collaborative work. Because of its interdisciplinary topic, TICE
2006 aims at bringing together researchers of various fields, including
Human Computer Interaction, Tangible User Interfaces, Computer Supported
Collaborative Work, Sociology, Communication Technologies, Embedded Systems
and Ubiquitous Computing, to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems,
innovative applications, and trends of tangible interaction in collaborative
environments.

The 3rd International Conference on
Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06)
- Building Smart Worlds on Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://grid.hust.edu.cn/uic06/
Organized by Huazhong Univ. of Sci. and Tech. (HUST)
Co-Sponsored by HUST, NSFC, 863, ChinaGrid, IFIP
In Cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society (Applying)
Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, September 3-6, 2006
******************************************************
Following ubiquitous computers, networks, information,
services, etc., is a road towards a smart world (SW)
created on both real and cyber spaces. A SW is mainly
characterized by ubiquitous intelligence (UI) or
computational intelligence pervasive in the physical world,
filled with ubiquitous intelligent or smart things,
that are capable of computing, communicating, and behaving
smartly with some intelligence. One of the profound implications
of such ubiquitous smart things is that various kinds and
levels of intelligence will exist ubiquitously in
everyday objects, environments, systems and even ourselves,
and possibly be extended from man-made to natural things.
"Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of
all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are
essential elements and components of the SW.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of
intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive,
reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient,
perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking.
Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist
to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of
any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the
right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l
Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005,

With the shift towards the knowledge society, changing working
conditions and the continuous evolution of information and
communication technologies, peoples' knowledge and skills need
continuous development. Technology enhanced learning is one of the
strategic objectives of the EU/IST Work Programme, with the goal of
"improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of learning, for
individuals and organizations, independent of time, place and pace."
Innovative infrastructuctures, methods and approaches are needed to
reach this goal, and will facilitate transfer and sharing of
knowledge between individuals and in organizations. The First
European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning provides a unique
forum for all research related to technology-enhanced learning, as
well as its interactions with knowledge management, business
processes and work environments. It will provide a competitive yet
broad enough forum for technology enhanced learning research in
Europe and world-wide through specialized workshops and the main
conference. The conference will provide unique networking
possibilities for participating researchers.
The EC-TEL Workshops are intended to bring together pre-conference
communities to work together on a common topic for technology
enhanced learning. The context of this work should be the conference
theme of “Innovative Approaches for Learning and Knowledge Sharing”.
Unlike some conferences, it is intended that EC-TEL workshops should
be highly interactive and fully engage participants. To that end it
is important that workshop submissions clearly indicate how invited
speakers / facilitators will attract contributions from our community
to their workshop session, and how they will help workshop attendees
to contribute.
EC-TEL aims to support a limited number of workshops, so the level of
quality of submissions is expected to be high. The workshops will
run in the two days preceding the main conference.
** Submission **
Papers describing the workshop proposal should not exceed 6 pages
(single spaced, 12 point Times New Roman style font). Workshop
proposals should include a short statement describing the background
and of each of the organizers, clearly illustrating their expertise
in this topic. Workshop proposers should outline the names and
topics of expected contributors/facilitators, and indicate why EC-TEL
conference attendees would participate in the workshop. Only
electronic submissions will be accepted. Workshop participants will
need to register for the EC-TEL conference.
Enquiries and submissions should be emailed to the EC-TEL workshop
