********************************************************************
Grid computing has become one of the most important topics appeared and
widely developed in the computing field in the last decade. The research
area of grid computing is making rapid progress, owing to the increasing
necessity of computation in the resolution of complex applications.
Clusters are, in some sense, the predecessors of the grid technology.
Clusters interconnect nodes through a local high-speed network, using
commodity hardware, with the aim of reducing the costs of such
infrastructures. Supercomputers have been replaced by cluster of
workstations in a huge number of research projects, being the grid
technology the natural evolution of clusters.
One of the major goals of grid computing is to provide efficient access
to data. Grids provide access to distributed computing and data
resources, allowing data-intensive applications to improve significantly
data access, management and analysis. Nowadays, there is a huge number
of data-intensive applications, e.g. data mining systems extracting
knowledge from large volumes of data. Existing data-intensive
applications have been used in several domains, such as physics, climate
modelling, biology or visualization. Grid systems responsible for
tackling and managing large amounts of data in geographically
distributed environments are usually named data grids.
The great challenge of grid computing is the complete integration of
heterogeneous computing systems and data resources with the aim of
providing a global computing space. The achievement of this goal will
involve revolutionary changes in the field of computation, because it
will enable resource-sharing across networks, being data one of the most
important ones.
This workshop is intended for researchers in grid computing, who want to
extend their background on this area and more specifically to those that
use grid environments for managing and analysing data.

Analysis and Control of Complex Systems
In the International Journal of General Systems (IJGS)
Recent advances in computing and network technologies have contributed much
to the successful handling of certain problems in biology, physics,
economics etc that until recently were thought too difficult to be analysed.
These complex systems problems tend to share a number of interesting
properties. For example, they have many components that interact in some
interesting way and these components or agents may be similar or differ in
important characteristics. The systems are dynamic in nature, interact with
their environments and adapt their internal structures as a consequence of
such interaction. A key feature of such a system is that the non-linear
interactions among its components can lead to interesting emergent
behaviour.
The overall aim of this special issue is to bring together the
latest/innovative knowledge and advances in handling complex systems, which
may depend largely on methods from artificial intelligence, mathematics,
statistics, operational research, and engineering, including
non-linear dynamics, time series analysis, dynamic systems, cellular
automata, artificial life, evolutionary computation, game theory, neural
networks, multi-agents, and heuristic search methods. The solicited papers
in this special issue should provide solutions, or early promises, to
modelling, analysis and control problems of real-world complex systems, such
as communication systems, process control, environmental systems,
intelligent manufacturing systems, transportation systems, structural
systems, and so on.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Modelling and model reduction; Decomposition techniques; Decentralized
control and estimation; Multi-criteria Optimization (including); Stability
analysis and stabilization; Control of uncertain systems.
2. Intelligent control; Neural network; Hybrid systems; Discrete event
systems; Complex systems and chaos; Distributed and hierarchical control
systems; Descriptor and implicit Systems; Fault detection and supervision.
3. Decision support systems (including use of artificial intelligence and
fuzzy logic); Production planning and scheduling; Robotic systems; Life
support (water, gas, power, etc.) systems; Process industry (chemical, oil,
metals, etc.)
4. Biological systems; Communication and information systems; Agricultural
systems; Human-machine interaction; Business and management systems,
Financial and economic systems; Environmental systems; Transportation
systems; Manufacturing systems; Virtual factory; Risk analysis in complex
systems.

- IEEE- Computational Intelligence Society
Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of
computational intelligence focusing on synergistic combinations of
multiple approaches to develop the next generation of intelligent
systems. A fundamental stimulus to the investigations of Hybrid
Intelligent Systems (HIS) is the awareness that combined approaches
will be necessary if the remaining tough problems in artificial
intelligence are to be solved. Neural computing, machine learning,
fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, agent-based methods, among
others, have been established and shown their strength and drawbacks.
Recently, hybrid intelligent systems are getting popular due to their
capabilities in handling several real world complexities involving
imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness.
HIS'05 builds on the success of previous HIS events: HIS'04 was held
in Kitakyushu, Japan, HIS'03 in Melbourne, Australia, HIS'02 in
Santiago, Chile, and HIS'01, the first event, in Adelaide, Australia.
All events attracted participants from over 30 countries. HIS'05 is,
therefore, the fifth International Conference that brings together
researchers, developers, practitioners, and users of soft computing,
computational intelligence, multi-agents, and several other
intelligent computing techniques. The objectives of this
international meeting are to increase the awareness of the research
community of the broad spectrum of hybrid techniques, to bring
together AI researchers from around the world to present their
cutting-edge results, to discuss the current trends in HIS research,
to develop a collective vision of future opportunities, to establish

**** HIS'05 - First Call for Papers ****
5th International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'05)
November 06-09, 2005
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Conference URL: http://his05.hybridsystem.com
Mirror Site: http://www.ica.ele.puc-rio.br/his05
***************************************************
Deadline for Paper Submission: July 1st, 2005
***************************************************
HIS'05 is technically co-sponsored by:
- IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Society
- International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA)
- European Neural Network Society (ENNS)
- European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology (EUSFLAT)
- The World Federation on Soft Computing
- Brazilian Computing Society (SBC)
- Brazilian Society for Automation (SBA)
HIS'05 is organized in cooperation with:
The objectives of this
international meeting are to increase the awareness of the research
community of the broad spectrum of hybrid techniques, to bring
together AI researchers from around the world to present their
cutting-edge results, to discuss the current trends in HIS research,
to develop a collective vision of future opportunities, to establish
international collaborative opportunities, and as a result to advance
the state of the art of the field.
HIS'05 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work that
demonstrates current research in hybrid intelligent systems research
and their applications in science, technology, business and commerce.
Submitted papers have to be original, containing new and original
results. The assessment criteria will be heavily weighted towards
originality, potential impact and relevance to HIS'05 themes. All
papers will be peer reviewed by three independent referees of the
international program committee of HIS'05.
HIS'05 will focus on the following topics:
** Theoretical Advances in Hybrid Intelligent System Architectures
