2006 IEEE International Conference on Granular Computing
GSU, Atlanta, USA, May 10-12, 2006
Sponsored by The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.
http://www.cs.sjsu.edu/~grc/index.php
Granular Computing (GrC) is a general computation theory for effectively
using granules such as classes, clusters, subsets, groups and intervals to
build an efficient computational model for complex applications with huge
amounts of data, information and knowledge. Though the label is relatively
recent, the basic notions and principles of granular computing, though
under different names, have appeared in many related fields, such as
information hiding in programming, granularity in artificial intelligence,
divide and conquer in theoretical computer science, interval computing,
cluster analysis, fuzzy and rough set theories, neutrosophic computing,
quotient space theory, belief functions, machine learning, databases, and
many others. In the past few years, we have witnessed a renewed and fast
growing interest in GrC. Granular computing has begun to play important
roles in bioinformatics, e-Business, security, machine learning, data
mining, high-performance computing and wireless mobile computing in terms
of efficiency, effectiveness, robustness and uncertainty.

SCOPE
This is the ninth IEEE Computer Society symposium dealing with the
rapidly expanding field of object-oriented real-time distributed
computing (ORC) technology. The principal theme of ISORC is the use
of the object-oriented computing paradigm - which has prevailed in
many non-real-time applications in the past decade - in a wide variety
of real-time applications. In the ISORC series, this paradigm
emphasizes its spirit of openness where diverse views and new
approaches to challenging issues can be freely discussed.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Papers pertaining to all aspects of ORC are sought, including but not
limited to the following:
Programming and system engineering:
ORC paradigms, object models, languages, RT Corba, Embedded .NET,
RT RMI, RT Java, UML, application programming interface (API),
specification, design, verification, validation, testing, maintenance,
system of systems, etc.
Distributed computing and communication infrastructures:
Internet QoS (quality of service), real-time communication,
networked computing platforms, protocols, inter-operability, security,
trusted and dependable systems, fault tolerance, virtual subnets for ORC.
System software:
real-time kernels and operating systems, middleware support for ORC,
QoS management, extensibility, synchronization, resource allocation,
scheduling, fault tolerance, security.
Applications:
embedded systems (automotive, avionics, consumer electronics,
building systems, etc), multimedia processing,
RT Web-based applications and use of XML,
real-time object-oriented simulations.
System evaluation:
output accuracy, timeliness, worst-case execution time, dependability,
end-to-end QoS, overhead, fault detection and recovery time.
Papers dealing with other issues that are related to the
specification, design, implementation, and evaluation of ORC systems
are also welcome. To promote dialogues between researchers and users
of ORC, contributions from industry are particularly welcome.
CONFERENCE SESSION FORMATS
Following the tradition of ISORC, the conference program will consist
of sessions of different formats:
* presentations of regular and short papers,
* a number of panel discussions, and
* special sessions devoted to reporting industrial advances
GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPTS
Research Papers.
Papers should describe original work and be 20 double-spaced
pages (6,000 words) or less in length.
Papers presenting Industrial Advances.
Industrial papers and practitioner reports,
describing experiences of using ORC technology in application
or tool development projects, are an integral part of the
technical program of ISORC. A majority of these papers are
expected to be shorter and less formal than research papers.
They should clearly identify, and discuss in detail, the
issues that represent notable industrial advances. Reports
with project metrics supporting their claims are particularly
sought, as well as those that show both benefits and
drawbacks of the approaches used in the given project.
Short Synopses.
Short papers (about 5 double-spaced pages in length) on
substantial real-time applications are also invited, and
should contain enough information for the program committee
to understand the scope of the project and evaluate the
novelty of the problem or approach.
According to program committee guidelines, papers presenting practical
techniques, ideas, or evaluations will be favored. Papers reporting
experimentation results and industrial experiences are particularly
welcome. Originality will not be interpreted too narrowly.
Papers that are based on severely unrealistic assumptions will not be
accepted however mathematically or logically sophisticated the
discussion may be.
All accepted submissions will appear in the proceedings published by
IEEE. A person will not be allowed to present more than 2 papers at
the symposium.

Vienna University of Technology
Organised under the patronage of the Austrian EU Presidency
In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture
INVITATION TO AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE
IN THE 15^TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF EDEN
EDEN, continuing its successful series of conferences, invites you to
join the European community of educational professionals with interest
and experience in ICTs, open, distance and e-learning.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the new learning space will be
realised in the context of its contribution to economic development.
E-competences and professional development are vital elements in
establishing the background for competitiveness and economic growth.
E-competences are essential for successful careers and for the promotion
of links between education, training and business. E-learning is the
major enabling factor for the efficient involvement in the new
competence development process, contributing also to the mainstreaming
of innovation.
The new competency system is strongly rooted in and related to
e-learning, using collaborative and knowledge management tools, in the
increasingly integrated contexts of education – training – work – home.
This requires the reconsideration of different modalities of achieving
knowledge and integrating it into personal portfolios. The ongoing
Bologna process is adding further requirements to the new structuring of
skills and competences, with creative contributions from the educational
community.
CONFERENCE THEMES
A variety of themes are offered both in the general professional, higher
education and in the lifelong learning, adult education specific
context, which will form the main strands of the conference. You can
find a selection of conference themes underneath; detailed description
is displayed on the EDEN website.
* Preparation for successful jobs: information and communication
technologies and key competences for career paths
* Digital pedagogy and success factors in competence development:
the e-learning methodology toolkit
* Blending and integrating – Combination of delivery modes in
different learning environments
* Policy and practice: the e-learning experience on national,
regional and institutional scale
* Quality and qualification in the new learning space
* Distance and e-learning in non-formal and informal learning situations
* Recognition of prior learning, accreditation of learning experience
* "Lifelong e-learning" for competence development
* E-learning promoting cross-sectoral educational collaboration
* Arts, music and culture in the digital learning environment
CALL FOR PAPERS
You are invited to submit proposals for paper presentations in the
parallel sessions that relate to one or more of the conference themes.
Submissions may fall in the category of conference papers or short
presentations. You may also propose to run a workshop, introducing a
more comprehensive theme, including some related shorter contributions.
Full papers, not exceeding 6 pages should be submitted to the EDEN
Secretariat via the online submission form found on the conference pages
of the EDEN website by 1 February, 2006.
THE CONFERENCE VENUE
The name of the capital of Austria, Vienna calls for dreams about
baroque splendour, beautiful Jugendstil, valse, and glittering
ballrooms. Once the heart of the Habsburg Empire, today Vienna is a
thriving international city, integrating the rich inheritance of a
glorious past with a dynamic approach to the modern world. The
multicolored Vienna is a city of operas, concert halls, theatres,
universities, museums, and, last but not least, of coffee houses and
"Heurigen" (open air wine bar with music).
HOW TO JOIN?
Registration will open in February 2005. The respective form will be
posted with the Second Announcement and on the web. To follow the
shaping of the conference programme and for further instructions as to
how to submit your paper, please visit the EDEN website at
