: at the Thirty-fourth Annual
: HAWAI'I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES

: Additional detail on the web site http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu
:
: The Digital Documents track is concerned with the creation and use of documents whose primary manifestation is in digital form. This includes not only more traditional forms of documents, primary in text form, but also forms not generally associated with "documents," such as representations of persistent conversations through electronic mail, the content of organizational memory, and material recorded on video. In addressing the use of documents, the track also tries to address issues of the "social life" of such documents in such social networks as communities of practice, educational cultures, and the increasingly multi-lingual contexts of global communication.

Forwarded message from [bives(a)LSU.EDU (Blake Ives)] sent originally on Mon, 3 Apr 2000 12:50:44 -0500:
: CALL FOR PAPERS on Strategy and Policy in the New Digital Economy
: Special Issue of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems
:
: The purpose of this special issue is to stimulate theoretical and empirical
: research on the strategies and policies of organizations (for-profit or
: nonprofit) already operating on the Internet or transitioning their
: operations to the Internet.
:
: What are the implications of e-business for strategy, strategy making, and
: the firm's interaction with its policy environment? Is e-business creating
: fundamental shifts in the definitions, types, and nature of strategic
: orientations of firms? Should it? Are strategy and policymaking changing
: because of e-business? Should they? What is the role of strategy and policy
: in creating value from e-businesses? How is e-commerce advancing strategic
: thinking and strategic capabilities in firms?
:
: Many commentators claim that e-commerce is changing structures within and
: across industries, including relationships with customers, suppliers,
: business partners, employees, and the government. For example, e-business
: is
: said to shift the firm's emphasis from "customer focus" to "innovation
: orientation" and thereby change both the firm's internal structures and its
: innovation processes and systems. The role of technology standards and
: infrastructures, as well as the firm's interactions with the broader
: institutional and political environment, are also seen as factors
: potentially impacting e-business strategy. There are likely to be many
: other
: enablers, as well as barriers, operating to influence strategy and strategy
: making in e-business.
:
: This call for papers invites original scholarly works that provide
: conceptual, theoretical, and empirical analyses of firms' e-business
: strategies and policies. We particularly invite works that consider how
: strategies and policies interact in the broader environment. Environmental
: factors that might be considered include globalization, deregulation, rapid
: technological development, intellectual property rules, and technology
: standards and shared technology infrastructures, as well as the stability
: or
: instability of the broader institutional environment, including government,
: financial markets, legal systems, etc.
:
: Clearly, there are many interesting and important research issues and
: questions. We highlight a few of these below, although authors are
: encouraged to raise other issues as well. Authors may wish to focus their
: attention on particular industries or industry sectors.
:
: What is strategy and strategy making in e-business? Are e-businesses
: different from traditional businesses in the way they make and implement
: strategy?
:
: What are the strategic orientations of e-commerce firms?
:
: How is strategic orientation of a firm shaped by its economic, social,
: cultural, political, and technological environment?
:
: How do economic, social, and technology policy interact with strategic
: orientation?
:
: How do technology standards and architectures shape e-business strategy and
: vice versa?
:
: How are different political institutions and regimes working with
: e-businesses in formulating policy affecting e-business? How do these
: interactions affect the firm's strategy and policy?
:
: How do e-business strategies affect the internal structures for assets and
: resources?
:
: What is the role of IT professionals in strategy and policy selection and
: implementation?
:
: Manuscripts will be reviewed electronically. Authors should submit via
: email
: attachment to Sirkka Jarvenpaa, Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of
: Strategic Information Systems, sjarvenpaa(a)mail.utexas.edu Format should be
: MS Word, Rich Text Format. Manuscripts sent via fax or hard copy will be
: rejected. Submissions will be handled by one of the Special issue editors:
:
: Blake Ives, Lousiana State University, bives(a)acm.org
:
: Emerson Tiller, University of Texas at Austin,
: emerson.tiller(a)bus.utexas.edu
:
: Michael Vitale, University of Melbourne, m.vitale(a)mbs.unimelb.edu.au
:
: All submissions are due by October 1, 2000.
