: PAKM2000:
: Third International Conference on
: Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management
:
: 30-31 October, 2000
: Basel, Switzerland
: http://research.swisslife.ch/pakm2000
:
: -- Call for Papers --
:
: Sponsored and supported by:
:
: ACM SIGGROUP
:
: SGAICO (Swiss Group for Artificial Intelligence and
: Cognitive Science)
:
: Special Interest Group "Knowledge Management"
: of the German Informatics Society
:
: Rentenanstalt / Swiss Life
:
: Aims and scope of the conference
: --------------------------------
:
: To succeed in the accelerating business pace of the "internet age",
: companies must efficiently leverage their most valuable and
: under-leveraged resource: the intellectual capital of their highly
: educated, skilled, and experienced employees. The compression of
: communication cycles and the omnipresence of information forces
: enterprises to seek a faster return on knowledge - knowledge that
: ages rapidly in a market place brimming with innovation. One of the
: most important prerequisites in achieving this return is the
: systematic management of the key success factor "knowledge" -
: previously left to manage itself "somehow". Thus next-generation
: business solutions must be focussed on supporting the creation of
: value by adding knowledge-rich components as an integral part to
: the work process. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed which
: combines issues from a large array of fields, originating from
: quite different areas such as business and organization sciences,
: cognitive sciences, and computer science.
:
: The PAKM Conference Series acknowledges the above situation and
: offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners
: and researchers engaged in developing and deploying advanced
: business solutions for the management of knowledge and intellectual
: capital. We seek attendance and contributions from practitioners,
: researchers, and developers who work at the leading edge of
: Knowledge Management, pursuing integrated approaches which consider
: both, the technological side as well as the proper business side.
: PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange ideas,
: to develop new insights, and to envision completely new kinds of
: solutions to Knowledge Management problems. Like its predecessors,
: PAKM2000 will provide ample time for interaction and discussion.
:
: By explicitly addressing interdisciplinary approaches to Knowledge
: Management, the PAKM conference offers a unique and new kind of
: forum.
:
: Contributions sought
: --------------------
:
: The overall theme of PAKM2000 are next-generation business
: solutions and the role information technology can play in them.
: Thus, we seek original contributions in the triangle of business
: and organization sciences, cognitive sciences, and computer science
: that describe a true advancement in the state of the art of
: Knowledge Management:
:
: * Business and organization sciences give the overall framework
: in which to develop a knowledge management approach, which is
: first of all a business solution and not an information
: technology solution.
:
: * Cognitive sciences help to design a knowledge management
: solution such that it fits smoothly with the cognitive
: capabilities of the people involved and is optimally embedded
: in their work context - or, to phrase it differently, to
: ensure the situatedness of the knowledge management approach.
:
: * Computer science provides the technology needed to build the
: information systems which are often required to make certain
: aspects of a knowledge management solution work.
:
: Contributions to PAKM should show how the approach presented takes
: all of those three aspects into account. Additionally, paper
: submissions must clearly describe the (real-world) problem being
: tackled and point out the added value of solving that problem. The
: paper should give a clear description how the problem is solved and
: it should further make clear in which aspects the suggested
: approach is a new one.
:
: Submitted papers may be full papers with up to 12 pages and 30
: minutes presentation time, or short papers with up to 6 pages and
: 20 minutes time for presentation. All accepted papers will be
: presented at the conference.
:
: Papers may address one or more of the following topics, or any
: other topic as long as it fits into the overall conference theme:
:
: * Building and maintaining an inventory of the knowledge available
: in the organization (with people, in files, databases,
: documents)
: o setting up appropriate communication links between people,
: groups, departments to communicate what skills and knowledge
: they have
: o meta information systems
:
: * Bringing the knowledge existing somewhere inside or outside
: the organization to those places where it is needed
: o aligning organizational structures towards a knowledge
: sharing community
: o group support systems
: o decision support systems, just-in-time knowledge delivery
: systems, electronic performance support systems
: o information retrieval: interest profiles,
: information filtering, automatic text understanding,
: searching the world wide web, personal web agents
:
: * Making sure that available knowledge is reused and not reinvented
: o documentation and annotation of knowledge to facilitate its
: being assimilated by people who did not provide it
: o ontologies and enterprise data models to provide a common
: terminological framework
: o automatic text summarization to facilitate selection of
: relevant texts
: o group support systems
: o automatic indexing and abstracting of texts
:
: * Capturing and securing knowledge to avoid it from getting lost
: o designing business processes such that knowledge generated
: in ongoing work is easily and immediately captured
: o implementing lessons learned processes
: o organizational memories: knowledge integration,
: knowledge sharing, versioning, contexts,
: high-level modelling languages for non-computer scientists
: o knowledge extraction from texts
:
: * Developing new knowledge
: o organizational measures for supporting and stimulating
: innovation
: o information systems for supporting creative processes
: (exploration of data spaces, visualization tools, etc.)
: o data mining (from data, text, and the web)

: CALL FOR PAPERS
: Journal of End User Computing
:
: Mission: The primary purpose of the Journal of End User Computing(JEUC) is
: to provide a forum to information technology educators, researchers, and
: practitioners to advance the practice and understanding of end user
: computing in organizations. Prospective authors are invited to submit
: manuscripts for possible publication in JEUC. The journal publishes
: empirical and theoretical research concerned with all aspects of end user
: computing including development, utilization, and management. The journal
: is especially interested in those studies that show a significant
: contribution to the area by relating end user computing to end user
: satisfaction, end user productivity, and strategic and competitive advantage.
:
: Coverage: Topics should be drawn from, but not limited to, the following
: areas, with major emphasis on the productivity and strategic and
: competitive advantage derived from end user information processing:
:
: End user computing (EUC) productivity and quality assurance; End users and
: down sizing; Information resources management and end users; EUC and
: strategic and competitive advantage; Information center management;
: Managing emerging EUC technologies; EUC satisfaction; EUC in various
: management functions; EUC usage; EUC, piracy and copyright issues; EUC
: succes factors; EUC controls for security and privacy; EUC risk factors;
: EUC management; EUC hardware and software; End user supports and training.
:
: In general, the journal seeks contributions concerning any aspect of end
: user information processing including development, usage, satisfaction,
: productivity, success, failure, policies, politics, strategies, and
: management. The journal invites contributions from educators, researchers,
: and practitioners involved in research, management, and utilization of end
: user computing.
:
: Submissions: All manuscripts submitted to the journal will undergo a blind
: review. Authors are asked to submit five copies of their original,
: previously unpublished manuscript that satisfies the following conditions:
:
: * Must not be currently under review by another publication.
: * Must be written in APA (American Psychological Association) editorial
: style.
: * Should not exceed 25 double-spaced typed pages.
: * Must be accompanied by a cover page with author(s)' name, address,
: telephone number, and affiliation.
: * Must be accompanied by a 150-200 word vita of author(s) on a separate
: sheet.
: * Must be accompanied by a 150-200 word abstract on a separate sheet with
: appropriate key words for the papers.
:
: JEUC also invites case studies, editorials, book reviews, software reviews,
: practitioner articles for consideration for the Industry and Practice
: section of the journal. Submitted pieces for this section should not
: exceed 10 double-spaced typed pages.
:
: Review process: To ensure the high quality of published material, JEUC
: utilizes a group of experts to review submitted manuscripts. Upon receipt
: of the manuscript, two reviewers are selected from the Editorial Review
: Board of the Journal. The selection is based upon the particular area of
: expertise of the reviewers, matched to the subject matter of the
: submission. An additional ad-hoc reviewer is also selected to review the
: manuscript. Each submission is, therefore, blind reviewed by at
: least three reviewers. Revised manuscripts are reviewed by an associate
: editor and finally by the editor. Return of a manuscript to the author(s)
: for revision does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript for
: publication but it is a step in the right direction. The final decision is
: based upon the comments of the reviewers, and the quality of the revised
: manuscript.
:
: ALL SUBMISSIONS AND QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO:

: WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
: Agent-Orientation is emerging as a powerful new paradigm
: in computing. Agent-oriented concepts and techniques
: could well be the foundations for the next generation of
: mainstream information systems.
:
: Information systems have become the backbone of all kinds
: of organizations today. Yet the inflexibilities in current
: technologies and methods have also resulted in poor
: performance, incompatibilties, and obstacles to change.
: As many organizations are reinventing themselves to meet
: the challenges of global competition and e-commerce,
: there is increasing pressure to develop and deploy new
: technologies that are flexible, robust, and responsive
: to rapid and unexpected change.
:
: Agent concepts, which originated in artificial intelligence
: but which have further developed and evolved in many areas
: of computing, hold great promise for responding to the new
: realities of information systems. The workshop will focus
: on how agent concepts and techniques will contribute to
: meeting information systems needs today and tomorrow.

:
: Over the past few years, electronic commerce (EC) has emerged as a
: dramatic new mode of business. Today, almost every company is either
: using or considering EC. Also, advances in telecommunications and
: automated processes are already forcing dramatic changes in a variety
: of industries, ranging from banking and finance to music and
: entertainment. Yet, the TEC (telecommunications and electronic
: commerce) environment is still in a relatively early state of
: evolution, and many of the significant advances in understanding and
: implementing TEC are occurring concurrently in academia and industry.
: The traditional sequential process of technology innovation followed
: by technology transfer no longer applies. Thus, dialogue on this field
: between academia and industry is important. As TEC spans a wide
: range of reference disciplines, forums focusing on TEC are
: necessary to stimulate the necessary interactions and knowledge
: sharing across this broad community.
:
: ICTEC00 is intended to address these needs. Following on the heels of
: the successful second conference in 1999, the goal of the conference
: is to bring together both academic and industrial researchers in the

: Online Communities: Supporting Sociability, Designing Usability
:
: Workshop at the University of Maryland College Park
: Human-Computer Interaction Lab
: Symposium and Open House 2000
: June 1, 2000
: 10 AM-4 PM
:
: Workshop Chairs: Jean Gasen, Jonathan Lazar, and Jenny Preece
:
: Like the twentieth-century architects and town planners, software
: designers and community developers can together profoundly shape the
: online community landscape.
:
: Software developers design software, thinking that they are designing
: communities. Meanwhile, keen-eyed, reflective sociologists describe the
: emergence of communities. But communities are neither designed nor do they
: just emerge. The design of the software affects community development. But
: the way that people interact in a community strongly contributes to its
: long-term evolution. People's behavior cannot be controlled but it can be
: influenced. The community's purpose, people's roles in the community, and
: policies set-up to guide behavior, all help to influence how people
: behave. The web can support multiple forms of communication, each with its
: own criteria, each with its own form of "community." Communities with good
: sociability have social policies that support the community's purpose and
: are understandable, socially acceptable and practicable. Successful online
: communities also need software with good usability that is intuitive to
: learn, consistent and predictable. This workshop will address these two
: related themes - sociability and usability.
:
: The kinds of topics that we expect to discuss in this workshop include:
:
: Sociability:
: Moderation
: Different roles in the community: participants, lurkers, experts, novices,
: provocateurs
: Policies, rules, laws
: Trust, Empathy, co-operation, hostility
: Communication styles
: Avatars, emoticons, gendered communication
: Anonymity
: Persistence of messages
: Etc.
:
: Usability:
: Screen design
: Design of online questionnaires, forms, registration screen etc.
: Navigation support
: Representation of individuals, groups, whole communities and their
: activities
: Scaling from 10 -100 - 1000 - million person interface
: Searching archives
: Message presentation and feedback (e.g. threading)
: Design of avatars, virtual environments
: Support tools
: Etc.
:
: Form of the Workshop:
: The workshop will consist of short presentations. Each will take no more
: than 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Papers will
: be grouped according to the topics that they address. The final hour in
: the afternoon will be used to draw together common themes and conclusions.
: There will also be a lunch and breaks during the morning and afternoon
: when participants can discuss ideas. The general format of the workshop
: will be informal but productive.
:
: Participation:
: Anyone wishing to participate should submit an abstract of 200-600 words
: describing their work. Please state if your work falls more strongly under
: one theme or the other or if it addresses both equally. We expect that
: most participants will have a chance to present their work. If there are a
: large number of people who register for the workshop, we might need to
: select only a portion of the abstracts to be presented. However, all
: abstracts will be available on the web. Please send your abstract to
: Jonathan Lazar (jlazar(a)towson.edu) by May 10, 2000. After receiving
: confirmation from Dr. Lazar, you must then fill out a registration form
: with the HCIL. Workshop Registration includes lunch, handout, and
: reception. The cost of workshop registration is $70 if you are not
: registering for Friday's Symposium and $50 if you are registering for
: Friday's Symposium.
:
: If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Lazar:
: Phone: 410-830-2255
: Fax: 410-830-3868

: CALL FOR PAPERS
:

:
: Guest Editors
: -------------
: Martin Bichler, Vienna University of Economics and BA, Austria
: Simon Field, IBM Zurich Research Lab, Switzerland
: Hannes Werthner, Vienna University of Economics and BA, Austria
:
: Scope & Topics
: --------------
: Markets play a central role in the economy, facilitating the exchange of
: information, goods, services, and payments. Recent years have seen an
: enormous increase in the role of information technology in markets, in
: particular the emergence of electronic marketplaces. Different matching
: mechanisms are appropriate in different situations and there is not a
: single solution for the various negotiation situations. Therefore,
: economists, game theorists, and computer scientists have started to take
: a direct role and designed various kinds of markets for computer
: products, travel, insurance, and utilities such as power and
: telecommunications bandwidth. What is so special about "electronic"
: market design is the fact that a designer has many more possibilities to
: design a matching mechanism and an associated negotiation protocol than
: one would have for physical markets. Unfortunately, to date there is no
: general, computational theory of negotiations and market design. The
: design of electronic markets is a challenging task and involves a number
: of disciplines including game theory, mechanism design theory,
: simulation and laboratory experimentation.
:
: This special issue of the Electronic Commerce Research Journal is
: devoted to the theory and application of market design. Topics for
: submission include but are not limited to:
:
: - Mechanism design theory
: - Simulation of market dynamics
: - Computational exploration
: - Game-theoretic analysis
: - Experimental analysis
: - Equilibrium Analysis
: - Evolution of electronic markets
