: environments as part of the Workshop mentioned above. The target
: participants are academics, policy makers, technocrats and
: practitioners.
:
: This Workshop aims to (i) brainstorm the concept of trust and the role
: of Certification Authorities (CA)in EC environments in the context of
: different social, cultural and economic environments, and (ii) develop a
: framework for the role definition of CA sensitive to social, cultural,
: economic characteristics of an EC environment. Issues to be discussed
: include (i) the privacy implications of electronic commerce and the need
: for privacy and confidentiality; (ii) the roles, rights and
: responsibilities of CAs in electronic commerce; (iii) the policy,
: legislative and business framework for CAs; and (iv) the technical
: infrastructures and alternatives available for the operation of CAs.
:
: Please let me know by January 12, 2000 your interest in presenting a
: talk/paper or participating in the discussion in the Workshop. The
: Conference Web page (http://www.irma-international.org/2000_irm.htm)

:
: Subject: April Cutter IT Journal on e-business best practices
:
: The April *Cutter IT Journal* will focus on best practices for e-business
: projects. Ed Yourdon's call for papers is below. I look forward to hearing
: from those of you who would like to contribute. If you have a colleague who
: may be interested in submitting a paper, please forward this call for
: papers. The deadline for submission of papers is January 25.
:
: As many of you already know, authoring an article in the Journal is an
: excellent way to get your name out to IT professionals worldwide. The
: Journal (formerly American Programmer) is in its eleventh year, and remains
: one of the only completely objective sources of IT management information
: available; it remains unjuried and without advertising.
:
: We are pleased to offer Journal authors a year's complimentary subscription
: and 20 copies of the issue in which they are published. In addition, we
: occasionally pull excerpts, along with the author's bio, to include in our
: weekly Cutter Edge e-mail bulletin, which reaches another 5,000 readers.
: We'd also be pleased to quote you, or passages from your article, in Cutter
: press releases. If you plan to be speaking at industry conferences, we can
: arrange to make additional copies of the issue in which you're published
: available for attendees of those speaking engagements--furthering your own

:
: ---------------------Reply Separator----------------------------
: Around the world, companies are embarking upon e-business projects with
: an intensity and sense of urgency far beyond what we normally see in IT
: developmpent efforts. There is a sense that e-business projects are
: "different" from traditional projects, for several reasons: they often
: require business reengineering activities, they need to be finished very
: quickly, they involve a number of new technologies, etc.
:
: But there have been enough e-business projects conducted during the past
: couple of years that a body of "best practices" is beginning to emerge.
: We've decided to devote the April 2000 issue of Cutter IT Journal to
: this topic, and we'll be addressing questions like these:
:
: * What is the best source of information for e-business best practices?
: Are there books, conferences, journals, web sites, listservs, or other
: sources of information that IT professionals should be consulting in
: order to stay abreast of this area?
:
: * While there may be dozens, or even hundreds, of such best practices,
: what are the PRINCIPAL best practices that a project manager should keep
: in mind for an e-business project? Are there two or three, or perhaps
: 5-10, such "momst important" best practices?
:
: * How long does it take for such practices to emerge in a typical IT
: organization? What's the best way to disseminate these practices
: throughout the organization, given the usual frantic pace of development
: once such a project begins?
:
: * While there are several best practices for the IT professionals to
: follow, e-business projects probably require some best practices in
: other parts of the organization too, ranging from senior management to
: end-users. What are those practices, and how difficult is it to
: implement them?
:
: * If there are best practices for e-business projects, there must also
: be WORST practices -- i.e., things to avoid at all cost, in order to
: minimize the possibility of project failures. What are the key
: worst-practices that can be passed on to future e-business project
: managers?
:
: The deadline for submission of articles is Jan 25, 2000. However, since
: we only have room for a limited number of articles, it's important that
: you contact me as soon as possible with a description of the paper you
: have in mind. Most CUTTER IT JOURNAL articles are approx 2,000 - 3,000
: words long, plus whatever graphics are appropriate. If you have any
: other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at ed(a)yourdon.com ,
: or look at the CUTTER IT JOURNAL section of my web site at
: http://www.yourdon.com .

: of network (enterprise network or even the WWW), not only for
: "global" applications, but also for local applications using
: semantically related information.
:
: Both contributions with a strong theoretical and technical
: background are welcome, in addition to contributions focusing on
: domain knowledge and practical experience. Suitable topics
: include (but are not limited to) the areas listed below.
:
: * Analysis, design and implementation of FIS
: * CASE tool support for the development of FIS
: * Software architectures for FIS
: * Metadata management in FIS
: * Managing heterogeneous information sources including semi-structured
: data

: * Technological support for the integration of legacy systems
: * Influence of the application domain on the Design of FIS
: * Component-based engineering of FIS
: * Evaluation of FIS approaches
:
: The selection of presentations is on the basis of submitted
: papers (with a maximum of 10 pages). Please send the PostScript
: or PDF file of your submission to hasselbring(a)kub.nl. You may
: either send this as a MIME attachment or (preferred) as a URL
: for download. Submissions in the format of any specific text
: processing system such as MS-Word, Framemaker, or Latex cannot
: be accepted.
:
: The papers are reviewed for presentation and inclusion in the
: proceedings by the program committee:
:
: S. Conrad (University of Magdeburg, Germany) (co-chair)
: B. Eaglestone (University of Sheffield, UK)
: J. Grimson (Trinity College, Ireland)
: W. Hasselbring (Tilburg University, The Netherlands) (co-chair)
: A. Heuer (University of Rostock, Germany)
: J. Keane (UMIST, UK)
: A. Mester (Materna, Germany)

:
: AIMS & SCOPE
: ------------
:
: Together with wireless communication technologies portable computers
: and personal digital assistants (PDA) provide a pervasive base for
: mobile computing. As the mobile computing technology matures,
: millions of people will become mobile users communicating with one
: another and accessing various information resources. In business
: environments, the ability to access critical data regardless of
: location and time is even more crucial because corporate data must
: be available to applications running on mobile workstations.
:
: On the other end of the spectrum, database and distributed systems
: are instrumental in managing distributed information resources in
: fixed and wireless network environments. Interoperability and
: standardization have become the major features. However, existing
: DBMS and distributed systems lack the mechanisms for dynamically
: changing the environment where applications execute and the way they
: communicate over a heterogeneous network. Mobile computing
: therefore involves mobility of users, hardware, software and data.
:
: The focus of this workshop is on mobility issues in distributed
: systems and databases. The objective of this workshop is to bring
: together researchers and practitioners with mobile networking
: background, database research interests, advanced applications and
: distributed computing systems research and development skills to
: discuss all aspects of emerging mobile computing paradigm. Both the
: theoretical papers and papers reporting implementation and practical
: results are solicited. The topics of interest include, but are not
: limited to:
:
: * Data models for mobile information systems
: * Impact of mobility in distributed applications
: * Theoretical frameworks for mobility
: * Software architectures for mobile distributed computing systems
: * Wireless communications support for mobile applications

: WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
:
: Agent-Orientation is emerging as a powerful new paradigm
: in computing. Agent-oriented concepts and techniques
: could well be the foundations for the next generation of
: mainstream information systems.
:
: Information systems have become the backbone of all kinds
: of organizations today. Yet the inflexibilities in current
: technologies and methods have also resulted in poor
: performance, incompatibilties, and obstacles to change.
: As many organizations are reinventing themselves to meet
: the challenges of global competition and e-commerce,

: ANTS'2000 - From Ant Colonies to Artificial Ants: Second International
: Workshop on Ant Algorithms
:
: Brussels, Belgium, September 8-9, 2000
:
: CALL FOR EXTENDED ABSTRACTS (up-to-date information on the workshop
: is maintained at http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~ants/ants2000/)
:
: SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP
:
: The behavior of social insects in general, and of ant colonies in
: particular, has since long time fascinated researchers in ethology and
: animal behavior, who have proposed many models to explain their
: capabilities. Recently, ant algorithms have been proposed as a novel
: computational model that replaces the traditional emphasis on control,
: preprogramming, and centralization with designs featuring autonomy,
: emergence, and distributed functioning. These designs are proving
: flexible and robust, able to adapt quickly to changing environments
: and to continue functioning even when individual elements fail.
:
: A particularly successful research direction in ant algorithms, known
: as "ant colony optimization", is dedicated to their application to
: discrete optimization problems. Ant colony optimization has been
: applied successfully to a large number of difficult combinatorial
: problems like the quadratic assignment and the traveling salesman
: problems, to routing in telecommunications networks, to scheduling
: problems, and so on. ANTS'2000 is the second edition of the only
: event entirely devoted to ant algorithms and to ant colony
: optimization. Also of great interest to the workshop are models of ant
: colonies behavior which could stimulate new algorithmic approaches.
:
: The aims are to give researchers in both real ants behavior and in ant
: colony optimization an opportunity to meet, to present their latest
: research, and to discuss current developments and applications. The
: two-day event will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from September 8 to
: September 9, 2000. In the evening of September 7 there will be a
: tutorial on ant algorithms.
:
: RELEVANT RESEARCH AREAS
:
: Submissions are invited that describe:
:
: (1) Models of aspects of real ant colonies behavior that can stimulate
: new algorithmic approaches,
:
: (2) Empirical and theoretical research in ant algorithms and ant
: colony optimization.
:
: (3) Application of ant algorithms and ant colony optimization methods
: to real-world problems.
:
: SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
:
: Papers can be submitted either as extended abstracts or as full
: papers. The length should be of approximately 4 or 10 pages
: respectively.
:
: Formatting and submission instructions are provided at
: http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~ants/ants2000/ants2000-submission.html.
:
: Accepted papers will be published in a booklet that is to be
: distributed to workshop participants. We are now investigating the
: possibility of publishing the best papers as a journal special issue.
: In this case, a further call for full papers, that may be longer than
: the 10 pages workshop format, will be released.
:
: All accepted papers will be presented at the workshop as
: oral presentations or as a poster.
:
: REGISTRATION AND FURTHER INFORMATION
:
: Up-to-date information about the workshop will be made available at
: the ANTS'2000 web site (http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~ants/ants2000/).
