: Call for Contributions
: RoboCup Rescue: Multi-Agent Approaches to the Simulation and Management of
: Major Urban Disasters
: Pre-Conference Workshop of ICMAS 2000, Boston -- July 8, 2000
:
:
:
: RoboCup Rescue builds on the success of RoboCup Soccer, which
: furthered multi-agent research by allowing teams of real and simulated
: robots to compete within a fixed set of rules. The important
: differences between the soccer and rescue domain are that the rescue
: domain addresses a problem of major concern for society, namely the
: simulation of a large-scale urban disaster and the rescue operation
: that ensues. The real-world nature makes it far more open, distributed
: and complex than the soccer domain and the research issues are
: correspondingly broader. Whilst the initial stages of the RoboCup
: Rescue initiative are concerned with building a simulation environment
: chiefly for research and competition, the eventual goal is to support
: disaster management before and after a major catastrophe.
:
: The characteristics of the RoboCup disaster simulation are the
: following:
: * International Cooperative Research and Contest: in the spirit of
: RoboCup Soccer and the current trend towards cooperative, open
: source software development, the research will be carried out
: around the world with the possibility to plug in different agent
: and physical modelling algorithms into the simulator.
: * Large-Scale Heterogeneous Agent System: the agents being modelled
: represent a wide variety of rescue personnel, robots and software
: agents. For a major city, their number should run into thousands.
: This means a major shift in research to model problems of such
: real-world scale.
: * Comprehensive Disaster Simulator by Distributed Computation: the
: prediction of damage, such as the spread of fire and the collapse
: of buildings and highways, will need the integration of several
: physical models and the computational power that can only be
: achieved by a network of computers in an open, fault-tolerant
: architecture.
: * Complex Mission Planning: the planning problem here is far more
: difficult than that of RoboCup Soccer, or indeed most AI
: application domains. Time for decision-making is limited,
: conditions change rapidly, and there is much uncertainty about the
: state of the world and the effect of actions. Moreover, the agents
: are heterogeneous in nature and there are many decision-making
: agents whose planning has to be integrated and coordinated.
: * Integration with the Real-World Disaster: as well as a vehicle for
: training and planning for future emergencies, it is also envisaged
: that the RoboCup Rescue technology will play a key role in helping
: the rescue services cope with an actual disaster. This will need
: the development of technology to interface the simulator to
: sensors, human rescuers and teams of robots on the ground.
: Providing the most appropriate augmented reality infrastructure
: will be a major research challenge.
:
: The major multi-agent research areas that are relevant to this agenda
: include the following:
: * Scalable Agent Systems
: * Agents in Distributed Virtual Reality
: * Distributed Decision-Support
: * Augmented Reality
: * Real-Time Multi-Agent Decision Making
: * Planning under Uncertainty
: * Planning under Resource Constraints
: * Behaviour Monitoring
: * Agents and Simulation Platforms
: * Information Acquisition Strategies
: * Integration of Reactive and Deliberative Planning
: * Dynamic Coalition and Cooperation Strategies
: * Modelling Uncertain Dynamic Multi-agent Domains
:
: Submissions are welcomed that address the above and related areas
: which could contribute to the development of the RoboCup Rescue
: initiative. Particularly welcome are papers of an interdisciplinary
: flavour which could help to establish a new field of intelligent
: rescue science.
:
: There will be three components to the workshop:
: 1.
: The presentation of papers, either from invited speakers or
: from those who have submitted technical papers for review.
: 2.
: Panel discussions.
: 3.
: Demonstrations of multi-agent systems and simulation toolkits
: that have a clear relevance to the RoboCup Rescue vision.
:
: Submission format
:
: Those interested in attending the workshop should submit an abstract
: of the work they would like to present. There will be three ways for
: people to make a contribution:
: 1.
: Technical papers - abstract of not more than 1500 words, then a
: full paper of not more then 5000 words.
: 2.
: Position papers - not more than 1500 words.
: 3.
: Demos - a description in not more than 1500 words, including a
: list of hardware requirements.
:
: We will review the abstracts before asking the authors of technical
: papers to produce the full version. Depending on the quality and
: nature of the contributions, we intend to publish the full technical
: papers in a series such as Springer LNAI (or similar) in a form that
: will serve an introduction to RoboCup Rescue and the nascent field of
: intelligent disaster mitigation.
:
: Electronic mail is the preferred means of submission. The abstracts
: may be in ASCII, HTML, Postscript or Portable Document Format. The
: full technical papers should be in Postscript or Portable Document
: Format using a style suitable for book publication.

: ------------------ SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS -----------------------
:
: ECAI 2000/PAIS 2000
:
: 14th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence
: Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems
:
: Berlin, Humboldt University
: August 20-25, 2000
:
: -------------------------------------------------------------------
:
: Organized by
: German Informatics Society (GI) and
: European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ECCAI)
:
: Hosted by
: Humboldt University Berlin
:
: In this special turn of the century we invite you to celebrate
: ECAI 2000 in Berlin.
:
: In the tradition of previous ECAIs the conference will bring
: together researchers and developers from academy and industry in
: order to present the state of the art in AI both in research and
: in applications. The technical program will have a scientific
: track (paper presentations, invited talks, panel discussions),
: workshops, and tutorials.
:
: Since the year 2000 is a special year, we will make ECAI 2000
: a very special conference. Among the programs thought to realize
: this purpose is an exhibition concept that reflects AI's history,
: its gaining grounds in the 20th century and its progress paths
: envisioned into the 21st century. Furthermore, we plan to have a
: rather unusual sidetrack meant to attract layman such that
: ECAI 2000 becomes an event in Berlin and not only one of diverse
: scientific congresses hardly noticed by the public. In so far, we
: aim at presenting AI on ECAI 2000 in a very broad scope in order
: to show its relation to other classical and advanced IT-topics
: (e. g. databases, distributed computing, robotics, operations re-
: search, artificial life, neuro sciences, virtual reality, and
: multimedia).
:
: For the first time, ECAI comprises the Prestigious Applications
: of Intelligent Systems sub-conference (PAIS 2000). The purpose of
: this event is to provide a forum for industry practitioners to
: learn about the power and applicability of selected intelligent
: systems techniques and share experience on the application, deve-
: lopment and deployment of intelligent systems in industry. This
: will be the largest showcase in Europe of real applications using
: intelligent systems technology and the ideal place to meet with
: those working to make successful applications.

: PAIS 2000 SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
: --------------------------------
:
: ECAI is pleased to announce its Prestigious Applications of
: Intelligent Systems (PAIS 2000) sub-conference. The PAIS 2000
: Program Committee invites authors to submit application papers.
:
: IMPORTANT DATES
:
: 2 Feb 2000 Deadline for PAIS paper summaries
: 4 Feb 2000 Deadline for papers
: 28 Apr 2000 Notification of acceptance
: 29 May 2000 Camera-ready copies of papers
: 23-25 Aug 2000 PAIS 2000
:
: This event, associated with ECAI 2000 is created to specifi-
: cally highlight significant successful applications of Intelli-
: gent Systems (IS) technology. The purpose of the event is to pro-
: vide a forum for industry practitioners to learn about the power
: and applicability of selected IS techniques and share experience
: on the applicability, development and deployment of intelligent
: systems in industry. This will be the largest showcase in Europe
: of real application using Intelligent Systems technology and the
: ideal place to meet with those working to make successful
: IS-based applications.
:
: The Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems event will
: present papers describing successful applications of Intelligent
: Systems. Papers are selected to highlight critical areas of
: success (and failure) and to present the benefits and lessons of
: value to other developers. Submitted papers should make these
: points clear. Papers should contain sections covering the
: following information:
:
: Descriptive Title and Abstract: These should convey clearly and
: simply what the application is and its operational status. Do use
: a title that makes it clear to a reader what the application is.
: Don't use a clever, nor an obscure title.
:
: Problem description: This should describe the problem that the
: application solves, stating the objectives of the application and
: explaining why an Intelligent Systems solution was required. If
: other solutions were tried and failed, briefly outline these so-
: lutions with reasons for failure.
:
: Application description: This should describe the solution to
: the problem, with technical details on design and implementation.
: It should describe any methodological approach used, detail the
: key IS techniques used and if appropriate show how they were in-
: tegrated with conventional techniques. If commercial tools were
: used they should be identified and reasons for their selection
: given.
:
: Application building: This should describe the size and skill
: make-up of the project team, how long is took to build and the
: costs involved. How it was/will be installed and introduced to
: the users, with details of any training required. Describe any
: plans for maintenance, in particular how the knowledge is expec-
: ted to change over time, and any features to aid the updating of
: knowledge, etc.
:
: Application benefits: Were potential benefits identified before
: building the application and have these been realised or are
: likely to be realised? Has the application been in use and, if
: so, how often has it been used and by how many users? What fur-
: ther long term benefits are expected? What future plans have been
: made for its enhancement and use?
:
: For PAIS 2000, a paper is acceptable even if it describes a
: system which has not yet been installed, PROVIDED the application
: is original AND the paper discusses the aspects and issues that
: would help someone thinking of implementing a similar system in
: their own organisation. It must concisely describe and scope the
: problem tackled, saying why it is hard, and why IS techniques are
: needed. It should also make clear the status of the system, and
: should discuss such things as the project duration and effort,
: how the project was justified and the expected benefits estima-
: ted, any problems encountered, the performance of the final
: system and the reactions of users. The review procedure is diffe-
: rent and separate from the ECAI technical conference. Papers will
: be evaluated by experienced application developers, based on the
: above criterion. Accepted papers will be published in the ECAI
: proceedings.
:
: FORMATTING GUIDELINES
:
: It is highly recommended to submit papers using the final ca-
: mera-ready formatting style. Submissions must not exceed five pa-
: ges in camera-ready format. Submissions of unformatted papers are
: limited to 6000 words including footnotes, figure captions,
: tables, appendices, and bibliography. Each half-page of figures
: will be counted as 600 words. (Please note that for some papers
: five camera-ready pages may be considerably less than 6000 words
: in practice.) Overlength submissions will be rejected without re-
: view. Authors submitting unformatted papers must include a word
: count on their paper. Latex style files to support formatting of
: submissions will be available. Final versions of accepted papers
: will be required to conform strictly to the formatting require-
: ments specified in the ECAI-2000 Style Guide. Each accepted paper
: will be allocated five pages in the proceedings.
:
: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
:
: Submission is a two-stage process. Authors are asked to submit
: a brief summary of their paper by 2 February 2000. The strongly
: preferred submission method is to use the web-based PAIS summary
: submission form. Submitted summaries will be assigned a unique
: tracking number that should be marked on the full paper sub-
: mission. Authors without access to the web should send a summary
: including the title, authors, contact address and abstract for
: the paper (maximum 200 words), plus a set of indicative keywords
: to the ECAI 2000 Program Chair (by email or postal mail). The
: summary information and the tracking number should also be inclu-
: ded with the paper itself, on a separate sheet of paper. (Authors
: not able to use the web-based submission form may omit the trak-
: king number).
:
: Submission of the paper is in hard copy form only, fax or elec-
: tronic submissions will not be accepted. Six copies of the paper
: (each including the summary sheet) should be sent by postal mail

: Dear ISWorld Subscribers,
:
: Below is the call for papers for the International Conference on CULTURAL
: ATTITUDES TOWARDS TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION (CATaC'00). I'm sending this

: CALL FOR PAPERS
: International Conference on
: CULTURAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS TECHNOLOGY
: AND COMMUNICATION (CATaC'00)
:
: Conference Theme:
: Cultural Collisions and Creative Interferences in the Global Village
:
: 12-15 July 2000, Perth, Australia
: http://www.it.murdoch.edu.au/~sudweeks/catac00/
: http://www.drury.edu/faculty/ess/catac00
:
: Computer-mediated communication networks, such as the Internet and the
: World Wide Web, promise to realise the utopian vision of an electronic
: global village. But efforts to diffuse CMC technologies globally, especially
: in Asia and among indigenous peoples in Africa, Australia and the United
: States, have demonstrated that CMC technologies are neither culturally
: neutral nor communicatively transparent. Rather, diverse cultural attitudes
: towards technology and communication - those embedded in current CMC
: technologies, and those shaping the beliefs and behaviours of potential
: users - often collide.
:
: This biennial conference series aims to provide an international forum for
: the presentation and discussion of cutting-edge research on how diverse
: cultural attitudes shape the implementation and use of information and
: communication technologies. The first conference in the series was held in
: London in 1998. For an overview of the themes and presentations of
: CATaC'98 and links to the papers, see
: http://www.it.murdoch.edu.au/~sudweeks/catac98/01_ess.html.
:
: Original full papers (especially those which connect theoretical frameworks
: with specific examples of cultural values, practices, etc.) and short papers
: (e.g. describing current research projects and preliminary results) are
: invited. Papers should articulate the connections between specific cultural
: values as well as current and/or possible future communicative practices
: involving information and communication technologies. We seek papers which,
: taken together, will help readers, researchers, and practitioners of
: computer-mediated communication - especially in the service of "electronic
: democracy" - better understand the role of diverse cultural attitudes as
: hindering and/or furthering the implementation of global computer
: communications systems.
:
: Topics of particular interested include but are not limited to:
:
: - Communicative attitudes and practices in diverse industrialised countries.
: - Communicative attitudes and practices in industrialising countries and
: marginalised communities.
: - Impact of new communication technologies on local and indigenous languages
: and cultures.
: - Politics of the electronic global village in democratising or preserving
: hierarchy.
: - East/West cultural attitudes and communicative practices.
: - Role of gender in cultural expectations regarding appropriate
: communicative behaviours.
: - Ethical issues related to new technologies, and their impact on culture
: and communication behaviours.
: - Legal implications of communication and technology.
:
: SUBMISSION
:
: All submissions will be peer reviewed by an international panel of scholars
: and researchers. There will be the opportunity for selected papers to appear
: in special issues of journals and a book. CATaC'98 papers, for example,
: appeared in the Electronic Journal of Communication/La Revue Electronique de
: Communication (Vol.8, Nos.3-4, 1998) and will appear in the AI and Society
: Journal and Javnost (Journal of the European Institute for Communication and
: Culture.
:
: Initial submissions are to be emailed to catac(a)it.murdoch.edu.au as an
: attachment (Word, HTML, PDF). Submission of a paper implies that it has not
: been submitted or published elsewhere. At least one author of each accepted
: paper is expected to present the paper at the conference.
:
: Important Dates:
: * Full papers 14 February 2000
: * Short papers 28 February 2000
: * Notification of acceptance 27 March 2000
: * Final formatted papers 17 April 2000
:
: PROGRAM
:
: Highlights of the conference program include:
: - discussion forums following technical sessions to focus on research
: objectives
: and progress
: - public lecture
: - public panels with panelists drawn from conference participants
: - reception in an art gallery featuring a didgeridoo player
: - conference dinner at a winery
: - pre-conference tour and post-conference safari
: For more information, see the conference web site.
:
: SUBSIDIES
:
: Funding is being sought by the Committee to partially subsidise travel
: expenses for students and scholars from developing countries. Please contact
: the Co-Chairs if you wish to apply for a subsidy in the event that funds are
: available.
:
: VENUE
:
: The venue is the Tradewinds Hotel, Fremantle, Western
: Australia, located on the Swan River. Fremantle, an atmospheric port of
: convict-constructed buildings and great pubs, is approximately 20km
: west of Perth. Perth was founded in 1829 and is the sunniest capital in
: Australia, and is the most isolated capital in the world. It has a
: Mediterranean
: climate, with warm to hot summers and cool winters. The average winter
: maximum temperature (June-August) is 20C (~70F).

: Important Dates:
: ===============
: Submission of position papers: Monday 14th February
: Notification of acceptances: Monday 6th March
:
: Technical Scope:
: ===============
: Middleware technologies such as CORBA and DCOM are now established
: as central elements in modern computer systems. Middleware like
: JINI and CORBA can offer portability and interoperability through
: their platform independent programming models. However, the rapid
: deployment of applications of this technology has created a demand
: for dynamically configurable middleware to accommodate rapidly
: changing execution requirements. The reflective middleware platforms
: that are emerging offer a general solution to agile reconfiguration
: through the concepts of open implementation and reflection.
:
: The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working
: on reflective middleware platforms (and related technologies),
: to identify key developments in such areas, and to discuss the
: future of this potentially important technology. The workshop will
: be limited in size to a maximum of 50 participants to enhance
: discussion, with participants invited on the basis of position
: papers. Such position papers should be no longer than two pages
: in length and should address topics such as:
:
: * The design and implementation of reflective middleware platforms;
: * Experiences with such reflective technologies in suitable
: application domains, e.g. mobile computing;
: * Fundamental developments in the theory and practice of reflection,
: related to this area;
: * Experience with existing mechanisms such as CORBA interceptors or
: the Meta-Object Facility;
: * Consideration of alternative techniques for dynamic configuration
: and/or re-configuration;
: * Examination of potentially complementary techniques such as
: aspect-oriented programming;
: * Techniques to improve performance and/ or scalability of reflective
: techniques;
: * Approaches to maintain the integrity of reflective technologies;
