problem compiling xotcl-0.9.4 on Linux

xotcl and tclkit on win32

Does anyone have an xotcl.dll built against Tcl 8.4 they are willing to share? I would like to use XOTcl with tclkit on windows. The latest tclkit is based on Tcl8.4b1 but the xotcl.dll available on the xotcl web page is built agains Tcl 8.3. There was a thread about xotcl and tclkit back in October (http://alice.wu-wien.ac.at/pipermail/xotcl/2001-October/thread.html). It seems that the stubs enabled shared library works only when used with the same version of Tcl that it was built against. That still seems to be the case. I tried building myself and was successful in Linux. I get compile errors using mingw on windows (The error is something like "initializer element is not constant" in many places in xotclStubInit.c. They look like constants to me as they are just references to function names). I also tried cross-compiling from Linux with the same compile errors. Thanks, Brian Theado

Xoctl lite tcl only version

Bonjour à tous, I'd like to try a tcl object system, but I'm looking for a system that support a lite version in tcl only, so that I can keep an interpeted version of an application. I know there is stooop which has the big advantage of beeing part of the tcllib. But I dont like C++ very much (:-), and I'm not sure there is a compiled version of stooop There is itcl for which there is a tcl only lite version. The advantage of itcl is that it is very wide range ported, and it seems easier to install that xotcl. Also I is to be much like a standard tcl extension. But I like the concept of xoctl, which seems more dynamic and powerfull than itcl, and keep the tcl phylosophy So my question is : Does a tcl only version of xotcl exists (or about to exists) which would be a subset of xotcl. The main fonctionnality I like is a simple inheritage feature and some introspection (which methods is supported by this class?, ...) If such a xotcl-lite version could be put is the tcllib, then I think it would be the best mean to make xoctl widly use (and the the standard tcl object system)

Functional programming?

Hello. My friends are trying to convince me of the value of functional programming. Writing safer and clearer programs sounds good, but I am not inclined to learn Haskell. Xotcl is a pretty flexible beast. Can I do functional programming in it? It seems as though classes are a variety of object in Xotcl, so that will be an advantage for passing classes around, but what else am I missing? I suspect that Gustaf and Uwe thought about functional programming when they designed their beast. Can I find out what their thoughts were? Regards, Rick

results of the poll

Dear XOTcl community, the results of the poll can be summarized as follows: - most people favored "names" instead of "symbols" for "selfDispatch" - the hottest favorite is "my". One can write now ... my instvar a b c my log ... instead of ... [self] instvar a b c [self] log ... the variant with [self] will continue to work forever.. If someone is not happy with "my", please react soon. From the "volatile" front: we have now more-or-less Zoran suggestion implemented in C. Actually there is no need in general for using tcl-variables to implement volatile objects (we could handle this on a pop of stack frames), but at least for pure tcl-procs, var traces are the simplest implementation. The current implementation (purely in C) works as part of the "new" method: a) Object new ... b) Object new -childof ... c) Object new -volatile ... d) Object new -volatile -childof ... (a) creates "global" objects, not in the global namespace anymore, but in xotcl. (b) can be used to create objects as child of other objects (e.g. [self], the objects are deleted, when the specified object is deleted), (c) are "global" objects as in (a), but they are deleted, when the current tcl-proc/object-proc/instproc is left, and (d) is a combination of b and c. Needless to say, a-d works for classes as well as e.g. Class new -volatile in order to create "anonymoes" classes. The implementation of new is slightly faster than before, since i changed the nameing schema to be the same for all kind new ("__#122", ...), such that e.g. [Class new -volatile] new -volatile works as well. the disadvantage is that the neat classname derived names as in earlier versions have to be done by hand now... that was it for now best regrads -gustaf
