XOTcl 1.1.0 available

Dear XOTcl community, i am pleased to announce the general availability of xotcl 1.1.1. Changes relative to 1.1.0 are: - Improved portability * for Mac OS X (many thanks to Daniel Steffen) * freebsd 4.9 (many thanks to Marc Spitzer) - configure can run outside of xotcl-tree and can install to a different directory. Example: % mkdir -p /tmp/xotcl/unix % cd /tmp/xotcl/unix % ~/xotcl-1.1.1/unix/configure --with-all % make % make test % make install DESTDIR=/tmp - several fixes and improvements such as * added option --with-tkinclude for configure (only needed, when built with optional --with-xowish) * made gdbm work when compiled with threads enabled * fix for initialization of stubtables in gdbm * fixes for HTTP support (return format of values in HTTP OPTION command made windows explorer hang) * easy provision for redirects in HTTP server best regards -gustaf neumann -- Univ.Prof. Dr.Gustaf Neumann Abteilung für Wirtschaftsinformatik WU-Wien, Augasse 2-6, 1090 Wien

Maybe I am missing something... But anyway, I can speak for tclkit and starkits, maybe you could grab the XotclIde starkit/pack and "unwrap it" and see whats is going on.. For sure, as a minimum, you would need to include the the xotcl dll, ~ 120Kbytes. If you are using some of the xotcl library procs, eg comm, then you would add those as well... I deleted the xotcl directories off my system to test it. I have one directory set up called c:/elevatorApp that contains 3 files... pkgIndex.tcl libxotcl1.1.dll and elevator6.tcl .... and of course the elevator6.exe file. seems to be all the files I need. now after I error trap I can distribute my first small gui xotcl/tcl app on my website. thanks, marvin

i still wonder if there is a way to wrap some xotcl files into the exe so i dont have to rely on having the whole xotcl install on the users machine . since i am using just the very basic features of xotcl right now it seems that i wouldnt need all of those files. i have some documentation now with freewrap that explains this process i'm wondering about and i might be able to get it to work but dont know what xotcl files need to get wrapped. if you might know which files i'm after to wrap into the exe, please let me know. i can live with having the freewrap on the users machine so if it is lots of explaining and you dont think others would benefit from an explanation that is ok too. i'm lucky i got as far as i did. thanks, marvin

hi- i fixed it so i can run my exe file from the desktop for my tcl script created in visual tcl that uses xotcl code. here are the steps to do this: after the tcl project file is saved in tcl open it in notepad. you will see this line of code that starts... at the top of the project tcl file if {![info exists vTcl(sourcing)]} { #add this code below this comment lappend auto_path "C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/xotcl1.1/xotcl" if you are using notepad choose file save as and put quotes around the project tcl file. choose file type all files from the drop down in the save as window. # as always before overwriting make sure you have a backup file. save and overwrite. now you have to manually freewrap the file. copy your project file to c:\program files\vTcl\freewrap\windows\bin directory. this way the project file is now in the same directory as the freewrap.exe file. choose start run and type this... "C:\Program Files\vTcl\freewrap\windows\bin\freewrap.exe" elevator5.tcl substitute the name of your project tcl file instead of elevator5.tcl click ok an exe file should now be created called something like elevator5.exe. now you can create a shortcut to the desktop if you like. hope this helps. thanks, marvin

Hi- I went into a console and typed puts $auto_path; when i load and run my project tcl file from inside the visual tcl environment it works fine. it bombs out when i try to use the binary. i'm including the auto_path printout for you to view for completeness. C:/program files/Tcl/lib/xotcl1.1/xotcl {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/tcl8.4} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/tcllib1.5} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/tk8.4} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/itk3.2} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/iwidgets4.0.2} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/iwidgets4.0.2/generic} {C:/Program Files/Tcl/lib/iwidgets4.0.2/scripts} thanks, marvin

hi- in my script at the beginning i added a line like this global widget lappend auto_path /Program Files/Tcl/lib/xotcl1.1/xotcl/ ; package require XOTcl; namespace import -force xotcl::* etc. etc. etc. <rest of script(s)> i thought this was the way to do it but i guess not. is putting lappend auto_path ... going to fill up the auto_path contents with a redundant path values making it huge? the widgets in visualTcl i use i believe are in libraries. how come they are wrapped in the binary exe file and xotcl is not? if it is required that i have xotcl installed on the computer i am distributing to i guess that is ok. is there a way to make it so with the programs i mentioned all i have to do is distribute the exe file? i finished my program i was working on that simulates a fake elevator. i used some xotcl code the mailing list helped me with and integrated it into a visualTcl GUI program with events. I wanted to put a download link on my website to show people. I was hoping they could just download the exe from the link but if not it is not that important. thanks, marvin

constructor initialization problem

Hi- In the simple code below I'm working on to simulate an elevator I am having a little trouble with the constructor initializing. I get an error that says "cant read currentFloor...no such variable." I thought I had set up the constructor right. I tried following this format from the manual --- Room instproc setCeilingColor color { my set ceilingColor $color } Room instproc init args { my setCeilingColor white next } Here is the code. It bombs out in the body of the method named request when it tries to read the first $currentFloor variable. I hope I am getting the idea and it is something kind of simple I am missing. Hi Uwe- I finally figured out what i was doing wrong that was causing my mail to get held up by a moderator. I use multiple accounts for email. I signed up to the mail list and was using one of my other mail accounts to try and post to the list so it didnt recognize me as a list member. I solved the install problems actually a few hours ago. sorry everyone for the multiple posts. i will try to watch what account i am using so it wont happen again. thanks, marvin
