Announcing Storm v0.1 — A transparent queryable object storage for Tcl/XOTcl

Continuing on where Spindle leaves off, I created a system which again reflects how I believe storage should work. After endless problems with RDBMS and the object-relational mismatch, I decided to hell with that, and built a transparent persistence layer which can use a file or Sqlite backend (no reason why others could not be used too). The idea is that any class created from the basic PersistenceClass metaclass can be attached to storage. Changes are automatically written out. Even more interestingly objects which are referred to, but which do not exist in memory, are automatically loaded as well. You can even destroy them at will and, when required, they'll happily be loaded back in. There is also a simple query language for getting objects from their class. It's not perfect, and a lot could be done with it still, but I like the idea. For many things full blown direct RDBMS access is just not necessary, and can cause major headaches. I also think that a lot could be done to optimise the Storm system so that performance differences wouldn't be huge, for many cases. Spindle (the web framework) does not require Storm in any way, and you can use any storage backend you want with it. Bug in XOTcl documentation

For the [ob info class] it specifies: objName info class: Returns the name of the class of the current object. Undoubtedly that should say "Return the name of the class of the object". info subclass

In my 1.2 version of XOTcl (OSX) [info subclass] works in the following way: Class Foo Class Bar -superclass Foo Foo info class Bar => 1 However the current documentation says the parameter given is a pattern and the fully qualified name is returned, or empty if no match was found. Has this changed at some point? This would be quite an incompatible change. I actually prefer how it works on my installation. I want to explicitly check if one class is a subclass of another, as objects, not as patterns (patterns can be risky). And it's not actually clear what is meant by 'pattern'. Foo is a class, Bar is a class, but Foo's actual fully qualified name is ::Foo, so if I wanted an exact search it should be against ::Foo, but will it also match 'Foo' (as desired)? -- Kristoffer Lawson, Co-Founder, Scred // http://www.scred.com/

XOTcl and Tcl 8.6

Dear XOTcl developers, I'm trying to use XOTcl (1.6.5) with Tcl8.6. Apparently XOTcl does not compile with Tcl8.6, but on Linux, I can get it to work by using a version compiled for Tcl8.5.4. However, this is not the case on Windows: loading XOTcl will make Tcl8.6 crash there. I also tried to use the xotcl165.dll provided by Activestate in the Tcl8.6b1 distribution. This seems to work with Tcl8.6b1 indeed, but not with newer versions of Tcl fetched from CVS (which I need). Is it possible today to use XOTcl in a recent Tcl8.6 ? Or are there any plans to update XOTcl ? Best regards, Koen Danckaert

why Attribute is not imported?

Hello, Why in the following code launched from tclsh I get the error: invalid command name "Attribute" during '::test1::Test slots' ###### package provide test1 0.1 package require XOTcl namespace eval ::test1 { namespace import ::xotcl::* Class Test -slots { Attribute name } namespace export Test } namespace import ::test1::* ###### XOTcl 1.6.4, works ok from xotclsh and when 'namespace import ::xotcl::*' comes right after 'package require XOTcl' and not within test1 namespace. memory leak problem

Hello, I am using XOTcl 1.6.3, on 64bit Linux platform, with ActiveState 8.6.b2 distribution. The distribution itself is 32bit. I also tried and have the same problem with 32bit ActiveState 8.5.7 version. The simplest way to reproduce the problem is to do the following: Class X; set parameter_list {parameter1 parameter2 .... parameter100}; ### 100 or so values X instproc init args { my requireNamespace; ### I need that foreach p [set ::parameter_list] { my parametercmd $p; my $p {}; }; next; }; #then run the following time {X x; x destroy} 1000000 ### the above line eats up a lot of memory and it is not being released during destruction of an instance.
