Improvement proposal for instfilters and guards

Hi all, instfilters and -guards are great features in XOTcl. Nevertheless there is room for improvement... In 99% of the cases one (I at least) creates a filter that needs to be triggered only at a certain method. Even if one has several methods to intercept, it is often easier to create separate methods and use guards to trigger them. Guards are great, but the overall picture of the code gets overly complicated in such cases. Therefore I'd like to propose an argument "-methods" to the filter command, that tells the filter to only be triggered on execution of the methods in the corresponding list: Class A ... A instproc do1 {} ... A instproc do2 {} ... A instproc do3 {} ... A instproc do1Filter {} ... # trigger only at do1 A instfilter do1Filter -methods do1 ;# or -methods {do1 do3} # rather than A instfilter do1Filter A instfilterguard do1 {[string eq [self calledproc] do1]} Is such a feature already planned? please help me understand some code

I response to a forum post, someone wrote the code below, which creates an xowiki object. I am trying to work with the code but am not sure what some of it means. Hi! There is new release of XOTclIDE 0.83 http://www.xdobry.de/xotclIDE Changes: 1) Small fix for compatibility with XOTcl 1.6. This fixes problems this syntax highlighting and code checker. 2) Debugger will be not blocked by others window grab 3) Some small usability improvements and bug fixes. 4) Code refactoring (Pre Tcl8.4 code parts ware removed) 5) Components of binary Tclkit distributions were updated (Tcl 8.5.2, XOTcl 1.6, actual sqlite) Bug reports and comments are welcome. xotcl::upvar-compat isn't compatible

Someone asked on chat why the unknown stuff (e.g., typing an unknown command name into the console) in tkcon "broke" after doing: package require xotcl::upvar-compat I looked at the code there, and the uplevel redef isn't actually compatible because it ignores error codes. Instead of: ::xotcl::tcl_uplevel 1 \ [list eval ::xotcl::tcl_uplevel $lvl $args] you need something like: set code [catch {::xotcl::tcl_uplevel 1 \ [list eval ::xotcl::tcl_uplevel $lvl $args]} msg] return -code $code $msg Just an FYI for anyone using it. I'm not sure what effect this would have, if any, on the xotcl use case. Regards, Jeff

proper way to access xotcl classes

I am trying to learn xotcl classes and their use from the xotcl- core.pdf examples. Most of the code examples look like they are being entered into a console while I am trying to write tcl files and then run them. Here's the class definition: ------------------------------------------------------------ package require XOTcl ::xotcl::Class Stack Stack instproc init {} { # Constructor my instvar things set things "" } Stack instproc push {thing} { my instvar things set things [concat [list $thing] $things] return $thing } Stack instproc pop {} { my instvar things set top [lindex $things 0] set things [lrange $things 1 end] return $top } --------------------------------------------------------- How do I access the class methods(i guess they are called) from within the tcl file? -type of Attributes

Hi, two questions on the -type field of the Attribute class: 1) There is obviously no documentation on the available types? I needed to force an error on a wrong -type that told me all the available types 2) Is there a -type that denotes a string? There is alnum and alpha, but I mean ordinary strings that can contain arbitrary (utf-8, ISO-8859-1 etc.) characters? Or alternatively, are the types extensible? Background of this question: The -type of an attribute seems to be a useful invention for an automated persistency framework for databases. The problem with that automation is currently that you can not really generate SQL automatically for XOTcl attributes, because you don't know their exact storage types from looking at the classes. If it was possible to assign the proper -type to attributes (e.g. "text", "date", "bytea" ...), then I could see two cool possibilities for a persistency framework: a) create XOTcl classes automatically using meta information of the database, and -type as validator b) create CRUD and select statements automatically from XOTcl classes, using -type for the proper quoting/format that the database expects At least for the basic types this could be helpful. Any thoughts? -- Eckhard
