Dear Soheil, Harsh and Cristiana,
Direct response as I don’t know how to interact with the consortium, if emails is the privileged way or if you want to set up some slack/mattermost/... forum. I’d personally be in favor of reducing email traffic as much as possible.
Think about the potential use-cases that we can work on At the moment, we are considering: Smart cars / transportation Smart cities Health data What else? (Signatu as a use-case provider?)
WP8 currently distinguishes only « »consenting via web browsers » and « consenting in iot » which is quite different from above suggestions. A few comments:
#1 I think the « via web browser » is key to the consent topic and should be retained as a use-case. And it applies both to traditional laptop browsers and also smartphone browsers, the case of smartphones bringing additional questions.
#2 The involvement of Signatu is nice, since they provide the CMP view of the web browser consent and its evolution for the coming years where many key changes will undoubtedly happen. That’s very complementary to our view as researchers on the topic. I’d like to see as use-case the new trends of the IAB/CMP/Google/etc. for collecting and managing user consent. From what I understood, I have the feeling there’s a general move to connected environments as replacement of cookies, and I fear users may have less control of what will happen.
#3 In the smartphone environment, there are clear incentives to have users switch to dedicated apps instead of accessing web services through traditional web browsers. It’s beneficial for the companies from a user engagement viewpoint but also because it enables them to collect additional data not accessible through the browser controlled environment. Hence smartphone apps also raise questions in terms of user information and consent, and I think it should be an additional separate use-case.
#4 Regarding iot, it’s unavoidable to split into sub-domains, as suggested above in your email, because the situation is pretty different. In a smart home, a user has some control over what is installed, but is left totally powerless in terms of information and consentl, especially as a single smart device can usually be controlled in many different ways… The situation is pretty different with smart cars where you basically indirectly use what has been included by private companies, and the same is true for smart cities with a mixture of private and public equipments. To summarize, I suggest adding a « smart homes » use-case, and keeping iot use-cases separate as much as possible.
#5 Each of these use-cases will cast some light on how consent is currently managed and issues they raise, in a « state-of-the-art » manner. As I understand the project proposal from the EU Consenting_WP_Tasks_Partners_V4 document, I have the feeling the current WP/Task description puts more importance on the development/deployment of a new consent scheme, than on what we can learn from existing practices. I’m not sure this clean slate approach is the goal and would be well appreciated by reviewers.
Cheers,
Vincent

Dear all,
Hope all is well.
To be well prepared for our meeting tomorrow, we’d appreciate it if you kindly: Read the call text carefully: https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opport... https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opportunities/topic-details/horizon-cl3-2021-cs-01-04 Compare it with our existing WPs/Tasks (you can find it on our shared folder) Reflect on the points that need to be updated/added/removed/... Think about your contribution to the project once again Think about the potential use-cases that we can work on At the moment, we are considering: Smart cars / transportation Smart cities Health data What else? (Signatu as a use-case provider?) Think about concrete industrial partners that can support the use-cases and can be invited to the consortium
Thanks a lot,
Looking forward to it, Soheil
