Call for papers - special issue of "Information Systems Frontiers" www.som.buffalo.edu/isinterface/Isfrontiers (published by Kluwer)
Special issue: Co-Design of Business and IT Systems
Guest Editors: Prof. Kecheng Liu, Staffordshire University, UK, k.liu@staffs.ac.uk Prof. Keith Bennett, Durham University, UK, keith.bennett@durham.ac.uk Dr. Lily Sun, Staffordshire University, UK, l.sun@staffs.ac.uk
FOCUS: Organisations are information systems within which information is created, stored, and processed for communication and coordination and for achieving the organisational objectives. Such systems may often involve deployment of information technology. This view of information systems and business organisations relates to much research work in organisational semiotics, language as action, human-computer communication, business process modelling, organisational studies and information systems analysis and design. Researchers, educators and practitioners recognise that IT systems must meet the business requirements, support the business processes, and adapt to changes of business practices. There are many factors that determine the success or failure of an information system. An important issue of research is how to co-design business and IT systems to fit one another, and to enable the information systems evolving with the changes of business requirements.
Work on the themes proposed for the special issue has been carried out by several research communities, for example, organisational semiotics, language as action and organisational modelling, and systems engineering for business change (SEBPC). The last one, SEBPC, is a research programme funded by the UK government, with identified aims to investigate IT systems and their (re-) engineering to support business objectives and processes.
TYPES OF PAPERS SOUGHT: The papers for this special issue should have not been published elsewhere; and all submissions will be reviewed by referees anonymously. The publication will be mainly research papers, with experience and case studies in industry. Therefore there will be interest from both academia (including research and education) and industry.
SUGGESTED TOPICS: -- Organisations as information and communication systems -- Roles and functions of sign, information and communication in business organisations -- Information systems - functions, components and architecture in changing organisations -- Relationship between technical and business systems -- Human aspects of IT and technical aspects of organisations -- Information, communications, meaning and norms in systems design -- Modelling business processes and information systems -- Co-design of business and IT systems -- Information systems evolution towards e-business -- Features, criteria and requirements for evolving information systems -- Legacy systems in changing business environment -- Requirements for information systems (re-)engineering -- Systems design strategies -- Methods and techniques for co-design of information systems
PAPER SUBMISSION: We intend to have the special issue published in mid 2002. The potential authors are welcome to consult editors for advice at any stage before their formal submission.
To enable the anonymous review, papers submitted should have a separate title page to include only the article title, author name(s), institute, and post and email addresses. The rest will contain an abstract, 4-10 keywords, and the paper itself. Authors of accepted papers will be sent authoring guidelines at a later stage.
All paper submissions should reach the guest editor by 1 August 2001. Paper submissions should be sent (as attachments of Word or postscript files) by email to the editor at this email address: l.sun@staffs.ac.uk.
