Conference: AMCIS 2018 - Digital Disruption, New Orleans, LA, August 16-18. Minitrack: The Dark Side of Social Media

Track: Social Computing

Description of the Minitrack:

The widespread adoption of social media is accompanied with arising challenges and problems. The positive effects of social media have received much attention, while the negative impacts and outcomes of social media use remain an under-explored area of research. Emerging IS research has begun to examine the dark side of social media that negatively impacts people’s personal lives or disrupts the operation of organizations and societies. In recent years, with the development in social media mobile applications, the problems and scope of risks in social media use have intensified. This mini-track invites papers that identify and address the dark side of social media. The objective is to raise awareness of the emerging negative aspects in social media use, and to address the challenges of maintaining a safe and productive environment for social media use.

Empirical, theoretical, or position papers are welcome in this track. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to the following:

- Privacy and security concerns with social media - Cyber bullying - Social media addiction and isolation - Social media and safety - Social media on health (physical and/or mental) - Social media and productivity/job performance - Social media and education- Social media on business communication - Social media and democracy - Social media on law enforcement - Social media and personal relationship - Social media and politics - Social media, face to face interaction, and personal fulfillment - Social media and society - Online identity, scam, hoax, and phishing - Ethical, legal issues and freedom of speech in social media

Submission types:

Full paper submissions (<5000 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) and ERF papers (<3500 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) must be made electronically through Manuscript Central.

Important dates:

- January 2018: Manuscript submissions begin - February 28, 2018: Completed Research, ERFs submissions due - April 17, 2018: Decisions made for Completed Research, ERFs submissions
