Background **********
This special track is the third one of a series started at I-Know'03 where we examined the role of (virtual) Communities of Practice within Modern Organizations (http://www.i-know.at/cop). At I-Know'04 we focused on the Integration of Knowledge Management and (e)Learning (http://www.i-know.at/kmel).
In the knowledge-based economy, work environments become increasingly more dynamic and complex. Workplaces are being transformed into "e-workplaces" where personal computers and their interconnection with organisational IT infrastructures play a vital role. This opens up opportunities for new types of work arrangements, but also poses challenges for those who have to cope with the dynamic nature of the new requirements.
At the same time, traditional forms of corporate training and development have been criticised for different reasons. Traditional training usually integrates poorly with the new work environments: it does not reflect work requirements well enough, there is a poor transfer from what has been learned to the workplace setting, and dynamic changes in workplace requirements are mostly reflected at most with a time lag. As a consequence, concepts and technologies for workplace learning have recently been proposed to improve learning practices in organisations. For example, various forms of computer-supported workplace learning have been suggested to bridge the gap between working and learning activities and the environments in which learning and working take place. However, there still remain various issues that demand further consideration among researchers and practitioners who are dealing with learning at the workplace.
Goal ****
With this workshop, we seek to bring together a wide variety of views on the issues of workplace learning. We therefore invite submissions to the topics listed below for presentation at the workshop. Moreover, we have established a community platform with which we would like to enter into a discussion before and after the workshop with anyone interested in the topic. Our aim is to produce a compendium that reflects state of the art research and practice in the field, and we would like to invite workshop participants to contribute to this endeavour after the event.

For this special track we invite submission that deal with issues including, but not limited to:
- Informal learning, e.g. - how can ad hoc learning in the workplace be supported effectively - in which situations is unconscious, informal learning more advantageous than formal training - how to determine if informal learning goals are met - Collaborative Learning, e.g. - Communities of Practice and their role in workplace learning - CSCL and CSCW tools and practices - The role of competencies in workplace learning, e.g. - competency development in informal learning - competency identification and measurement in dynamic domains - The integration of learning and work environments - how to utilize individuals' work context information for learning purposes? - context information on an individual level as well as an organizational level? - how to improve productivity by providing accessible, customized and accountable information? - how to integrate work and learning seamlessly and what are the benefits? - The integration of learning and knowledge management, e.g. - how to converge Personal Information Management with an Organisation's Knowledge Management? - Leveraging expertise in the workplace, e.g. - how to develop expertise (competencies) at the work place - how to enable colleagues to benefit from existing expertise - Learning issues within process management - Learning and collaboration issues within knowledge work

The topics mentioned above address researchers, developers and practitioners in the fields of Knowledge Management, Computer Supported Collaborative Work and Learning, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Organizational Development, Human Resources, etc. We aim for a fruitful multidisciplinary exchange of ideas and experiences between research and practice. The special track will be held in English.
Submission Instructions and Procedure *************************************
Submissions should be handed in as full papers and should not exceed 8 pages. Authors are encouraged to refer to the identified challenges and questions of this special track in their contributions. Whatever the exact topic is, the abstract has to show how the paper contributes to the integration of work and learning.
Please prepare your submission according to the author guidelines available at http://www.i-know.at/style_guide.html. All submissions, regardless of category, should include title, author(s), keywords, abstract, and references. Submissions are to be made electronically in PostScript or MS Word. Submissions are treated as confidential communications during the review process, so submission does not constitute public disclosure of any ideas therein. Submissions should contain no information or materials that will be proprietary or confidential at the time of publication, and should not cite publications that are proprietary or confidential at the time of publication.

Accepted papers will be published within the I-Know'05 conference proceedings in cooperation with J.UCS and Springer Co. Pub. At least one author of an accepted paper must register for the I-Know conference before the deadline for camera-ready-copies of the papers (18 April 2005). Otherwise the paper will not be published.
In addition to the conference proceedings, we plan to publish a review of state of the art research and practice as a more comprehensive compendium. Participants of the workshop will be invited to contribute. Details will be communicated at the workshop.
