WBPD 2005
1st International Workshop on Business Process Design: Past, Present, Future
In conjunction with the 3rd International Conference on Business Process Management (http://bpm2005.loria.fr/ )
Nancy, September 5, 2005
Important dates:
Submission of Papers: March 18, 2005 Notification: May 11, 2005 Final Version Due: May 27, 2005 Workshop: September 5, 2005
Workshop Background and Goals:
The conscious (re)design of business processes as a powerful means to improve performance and raise customer satisfaction is nearing its 15th birthday. Since the breakthrough publications on succesful, systematic corporate design initiatives in 1990, streamlining business processes using advanced IT has been on the agenda of almost every organization.
Despite its respectable age and its obvious pay-offs, process design is still more art than science. Many handbooks on the subject remain vague about how to actually derive superior process designs. Consultancies put much emphasis on stimulating the creativity of business professionals to come up with new process lay-outs, but the outcomes of such efforts are hard to predict. Scientific approaches so far have focused on small, well-understood business domains. Overall, much more attention is devoted to process modelling techniques and standards. In a way, this is similar to agreeing on the language, without knowing what to say.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners who have an interest in advancing the state of the art in process design (as in contrast to mere process modeling). We seek for contributions by authors who wish to share their innovative ideas and remarkable observations on the subject. Three main categories of submissions/presentations will be considered: a) regular papers, b) abstracts of work in progress and position papers (e.g. for Ph.D. students wishing to obtain feedback on early stages of their research), and c) industry papers. All submissions falling in any of these categories have to follow the procedure explained below under the heading "Paper Submission".
Topics:
Topics of the workshop include but are not limited to: - process design methodologies - process design tools - state of the art in process design - human aspects in process design - use and development of industry prints/reference models - issues related to process design in large projects - linking process design to the design of strategies - maintenance of process designs - success factors in process design - case studies
Format of the Workshop:
The workshop will consist of presentations of papers submitted in advance, which will be peer-reviewed. The form of the proceedings of the workshop will be decided in cooperation with the BPM'05 chairs. Contacts will be made with an International Journal to publish a selection of best papers.
Paper Submission:
Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for presentation in any of the areas listed above. Only papers in English will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 8 pages. Papers should be formatted in LNCS format (see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for details). The title page must contain a short abstract, a classification of the topics covered, preferably using the list of topics above, and an indication of the submission category (regular paper/abstract/industry paper). Papers should be submitted electronically via the BPM 2005 web site; details will follow. Please upload a self-contained PostScript file or PDF file.
