Greetings,
I've tried searching previous AISWorld posts but I haven't found a recent discussion of this topic.
I've been teaching undergraduate database design in the Computer Information Systems department in the College of Business at my university. I've been using entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) with crow's foot notation for conceptual and logical data modeling. However, I want to be sure that I'm teaching my students the techniques that are going to be most useful to them. It has been my belief that: Computer Science-oriented IS programs typically use UML Business-oriented IS programs in Europe use UML Business-oriented IS programs in the US use ERDs (with crow's foot being the most popular notation).
It has also been my belief that most US businesses most commonly use ERDs with crow's foot notation in practice.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone else about what modeling techniques are being used in other universities for teaching conceptual and logical data modeling, and especially any insights concerning the modeling techniques actually being used by businesses in practice.
Regards,
Steve
