Special Track on Cross-Platform Aspects of the Social Web (CPASW '08) http://www.triple-i.tugraz.at/i_media/special_tracks/cpasw
3 September 2008 Graz, Austria
---------------------------------------
DEADLINE EXTENSION
Since many authors have asked for an extension of the submission deadline, we will keep our submission system open for further two weeks. The extended submission deadline is now April 28, 2008.
---------------------------------------
This one-day special track takes place during TRIPLE-I '08 in Graz, Austria (3 - 5 September 2008) as one program item of I-MEDIA '08. The special track provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various cross-platform aspects of the Social Web (CPASW).
I-MEDIA is part of a joint venture of the conferences united under the brand TRIPLE-I (http://triple-i.tugraz.at/): I-KNOW - International Conference on Knowledge Management, I-MEDIA - International Conference on New Media Technology, and I-SEMANTICS - International Conference on Semantic Systems. TRIPLE-I reflects the increasing importance and convergence of Knowledge Management, New Media Technology and Semantic Systems. This unique concept aims at bridging the gaps between the various communities and their technology fields. Background
The ongoing socialization of the Web has led to the emergence of social platforms covering a wide range of applications. All of these platforms collect vast amounts of information from their users. However, users struggle when they want to retrieve their submitted information for reuse on other platforms. Users are typically active on a multitude of Web platforms and are currently annoyed by having to repeat many steps, including sign-up, login, user profile creation, and connecting with friends - defining their social graph - over and over again. Sharing information between Web platforms is still very limited.
With lacking interoperability, users become increasingly frustrated while trying to overcome the technical and legal hurdles. One popular example would be the well-known blogger Robert Scoble who, trying to retrieve his social graph from Facebook, was left with his account disabled. Several initiatives have been started recently, including OpenSocial (http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/), DataPortability (http://www.dataportability.org/) and the Open Social Web (http://opensocialweb.org/). They all cover aspects emerging in a cross-platform environment, e.g. counteracting the 'social network fatigue'. However, scientific publications on the mentioned topics are still scarce.
Besides the rather pragmatic approaches from the industry, a multitude of scientific projects are conducted by the Semantic Web community, e.g. the influential LinkingOpenData project of the W3C (http://esw.w3.org/topic/SweoIG/TaskForces/CommunityProjects/LinkingOpenData). These Semantic Web projects also deal with cross-platform aspects, however due to the explicit focus on semantic technologies, they are mainly discussed within the I-SEMANTICS (http://www.i-semantics.at/). Objectives
CPASW '08 tries to find answers to the following guiding research questions:
* What are the fundamental interoperability challenges arising in the Social Web? * What models, frameworks and technical solutions can help to overcome these challenges? * How can cross-platform synergies be facilitated? * What are the (side-)effects for existing platforms?
The special track will bring together international researchers as well as practitioners from different organizations who will have plenty of time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing. Topics
CPASW '08 is concerned with the emerging cross-platform aspects related to the recent socialization of the Web and the development of models, frameworks and standards in this regard. Currently, this field is mainly driven by dedicated individuals, supported by parts of the industry. CPASW intends to bring together scientific endeavours dealing with cross-platform aspects. Social, technical as well as business research questions are of interest.
We invite submissions that deal with aspects including (but not limited to):
* User-related aspects o Implications of the Open Social Web o Identity management o Privacy and security aspects o Cross-platform trust * Provider-related aspects o Application portability across Social Web platforms o Web Services, APIs and Mashups o Interoperability aspects o Standardization efforts o Impact on existing business models * Data-related aspects o Data Portability o Synchronisation across platforms o Aspects of Social Network portability o Knowledge Diffusion across Social Web platforms
