Dear colleagues,
ECSCW 2020 will be held virtually from 13. to 16. June 2020: https://ecscw.eusset.eu/2020/index.php/conference-program/
I would like to invite you to join the Panel on "*Surveillance Capitalism: **Data Driven Business Models, their Societal Impact, and the Role of Academic Communities": *
Abstract: A large portion of the software side of the IT infrastructure, including web search, email, and social media, is in many cases provided free to the end users. The business model that enables this involves customized advertising and sometimes behavior manipulation, powered by intensive gathering and cross-correlation of detailed personal information. The companies built on this model have global reach, but are primarily headquartered in the US and China. They provide some great products and services at no upfront cost to the end users. But the model has a dark side as well, with negative impacts for privacy, autonomy, human dignity, and democracy. The purpose of this panel is to provide a forum for CSCW researchers to discuss this business model, and especially how alternatives to it could emerge through a combination of regulation, law, and technological innovation, with a focus on Europe, USA and China.
