Special Edition of the Journal of Organizational and End User Computing

Security, Privacy, and Risks Issues in Health Care: An Information Assurance Perspective

The Journal of Organizational and End User Computing is seeking original research focused on organizational and end user security, privacy, and risk issues. Researchers are encouraged to use the Information Assurance (IA) framework as presented by McCumber (1991) and extended by Machonachy, Schou, Ragsdale, and Welch (2001). IA representations using these frameworks provide researchers with numerous perspectives in which to evaluate security, privacy, and risk.

Focusing on three broad concepts, Information Goal, States, and Safeguards, the IA representations illustrate the intersection of the three concepts within the following broader dimensions. Goals of the Information System: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Authentication, and Non-Repudiation; Information States, Data storage, Data transmission, and Data processing; and Safeguards: Technology, Policy and Procedures, and Human Factors. In addition to the concepts and corresponding dimensions, IA also considers the System Life Cycle dimensions of Initiation, Operations, and Termination of the system.

We welcome theoretical and empirical research that incorporate security, privacy, and risk in health care environments. Topics ranging from human computer interfaces, personal health records, confidentiality, and health maintenance are a few examples of end user oriented health care inquiries. In addition to end user oriented issues, organizational issues include risk mitigation, particularly in HIPAA or other regulatory environments. IA also provides a framework to minimize risk via Governance, including research related to compliance, disaster recovery, and organizational continuity.

Please note that the manuscripts accepted into the 43rd Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences Minitrack on Information Assurance and Interoperability in Health Care within the Health Care in the Information Technology in Health Care Track (http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_43/minitracks/hc-iai.htm) will be fast tracked for acceptance into this special edition.
