Globalization is the most significant development in the world economy over the last decade. Dramatic advances in communications and transportation, has speeded the flow and production of goods and/or services, created increasing demand for these products, and eased the task of managing globally dispersed assets. These factors have all combined to create highly competitive global markets in which change is rapid and companies need to be quick and flexible, but able to retain benefits of both economies of scale and scope. It is in this environment that the concept of knowledge management (KM) has arisen. How global organizations become aware of their intellectual resources (knowledge) and what programs they implement in order to apply and/or distribute this knowledge, to increase competitiveness, have become a key component in understanding how global companies can leverage their knowledge generating capabilities in creating new opportunities in global markets. KM is a discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying, managing, and sharing all of an enterprise's information assets. KM issues include developing, implementing, and maintaining the appropriate organizational, cultural and technical infrastructures to enable knowledge creation, sharing, and dissemination.
This special issue of JGITM will feature scholarly manuscripts that explore a wide range of issues addressing the global aspects of KM. Papers ranging from conceptual frameworks to case studies and empirical research are encouraged. Topics may include but are not limited to:
Research frameworks, methods, methodologies, architectures, and infrastructure issues in design, implementation and maintenance of global knowledge management systems and initiatives; issues in identifying and recording knowledge in a global setting; design of processes to share, use and protect knowledge globally; issues surrounding the articulation and communication of the purpose and the nature of KM and connecting it to other strategic and operational initiative and activities of the organization in a global context; role and impact of KM on process improvement in organizations in a global setting; the use of specific technologies, tools and techniques in managing (including identifying, capturing, structuring, storing, refining, personalizing, distributing, or applying) information and knowledge in a global setting; cultural and organizational issues in adoption and acceptance of KM systems and initiatives; the role of E-commerce in GKM
