Call for Papers HICSS-52 (2019): Novel uses, opportunities and challenges of blockchain for digital services Track Decision Analytics, Mobile Technologies and Service Science track

Selected paper of the minitrack will be fast-tracked to a special issue of Electronic Markets - The International Journal on Networked Business (http://www.electronicmarkets.org/ ).

New platforms and platform technologies, such as blockchain, offer new opportunities, especially for developing radically new transactional digital services. According to HBR, “blockchain could dramatically reduce the cost of transactions” by replacing private trust services with an open mode. Bitnation has the somewhat ambitious goal of creating a virtual “country” as a future legislative entity. There are examples of blockchain use for identity management, maintenance of shipping records in cross-border shipping, and even digital art. In addition to transparency, blockchain also offers near-instant settlement and finalization, which is important in, for example, stock trading, title transfers, and so on.

Until recently, blockchain service implementations and platforms have been the domain of computer science, and the main focus of research has been on technical aspects. Now, however, we are moving into an era of utilizing blockchain platforms that create novel opportunities as well as challenges for the creation of new services and whole service ecosystems, such as Ethereum. This calls for research from various disciplines, including at least information systems science, service science, marketing, and computer science, to better understand these opportunities and challenges.

As HICSS continues to address leading-edge developments, we especially encourage the submission of papers describing innovative services and approaches to utilizing blockchain. The minitrack provides a venue with which to present findings and debate the future of these digital open services and platforms.

The submissions can be research papers, case studies, or practitioner reports related to open service development and their implications.

Relevant topics for this minitrack include, but are not limited to:

* Blockchain and other open platform technologies, such as Ethereum * Non-public or semi-public blockchain variants (private and consortium chains) * Emerging blockchain ecosystem analyses * Novel approaches to developing blockchain applications and services * New application areas for blockchain * DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) * Other emergent payment and transaction platforms * “Outside the box” blockchain implementations (for example, in corporate governance or scientific publishing) * Challenges to the viability of blockchain in the real world * The good, bad and ugly of the current use cases and industry experiences
