___________________________________________________________________ CALL FOR PAPERS
21st International Conference on Conceptual Modeling - ER 2002
October 7-11, 2002, Tampere, Finland Host: University of Tampere
http://er2002.cs.uta.fi/ ___________________________________________________________________
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
Conceptual modeling is fundamental to the information systems discipline, including new e-world activities. It has become a major mechanism for understanding and representing organizations and the information systems that support them. ER 2002 encompasses the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling. It addresses research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective information system implementations including advanced applications such as e-commerce, knowledge management, learning environments, telecommunications, and enterprise management systems.
Conceptual models instantiate various levels of abstraction. They must facilitate understanding and foster communication between technology experts and those who would benefit from the application of those technologies. They must enable users of these technologies to understand their current applications and visualize new applications. To do so our understanding and knowledge about information and how to describe, represent, and intelligently utilize it must be further developed. We invite researchers and practitioners from both computer sciences and management information systems. Reports of new ideas and approaches, useful experiences and informative experiments are all welcome. Regular and industrial papers are solicited along with proposals for workshops, tutorials, panel sessions and posters. In particular, ER 2002 will emphasize conceptual modeling issues related to enterprise-wide information systems and information systems to support virtual organizations. The relevant topics include the following:
MAIN TOPICS OF INTEREST
Theoretical Foundations of Conceptual Modeling - description, conceptualisation, and formal methods for conceptual modeling - information modeling concepts, ontologies, and concept systems - conceptual change and schema evolution - views, integration of modeling paradigms - design methodologies and their evaluation (ER, OO, ORM, and others) - spatial, temporal, and multimedia aspects in conceptual models - metadata, its interpretation and usage - ontological and conceptual correctness in modeling,

Call for Papers (and submission guidelines)
Authors of regular papers are invited to submit original contributions not exceeding 5,000 words (approximately 20 double-spaced pages) electronically. These full papers may be research papers or industry oriented papers. They will be reviewed by the Program Committee and accepted papers will be included in the proceedings. The papers must not be submitted to or accepted by any other conference or journal. The authors must submit the abstract of the paper by 20 February, 2002, and the full paper by 8 March, 2002. The ER2002 home page (http://er2002.cs.uta.fi/) will contain further details on electronic submissions.
The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series in time for distribution at the conference. It will contain full papers and invited papers. In parallel to the printed volumes, the content will be made available as full-text electronic versions of LNCS books. Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions for possible publication in the Data & Knowledge Engineering journal.
Call for Workshop Proposals
A series of workshops will be held in conjunction with the Conceptual Modeling ER2002 conference to encourage interaction between research groups and also between researchers and practitioners. We solicit proposals for workshops related to the conference topics. Workshop topics should be inline with the conference topics. Proposals for workshops should stress how they intend to provide more insight into the proposed topics with respect to the main conference. The scope definition of the proposal should encompass only some of the topics of the main conference. Preliminary workshop proposals should be submitted to the workshop co-chairs, Antoni Olivé (olive@lsi.upc.es), Eric Yu (eric@cs.toronto.edu), and Masatoshi Yoshikawa (yosikawa@is.aist-nara.ac.jp) by December 20, 2001. Prior contact with the workshop co-chairs is encouraged. Final workshop proposals must be submitted by 30 January, 2002, to the workshop co-chairs. Preprint of the workshop materials will be distributed at the workshops. Proceedings of all workshops will be published as a single volume in Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science, separate from the conference proceedings, after the workshops.
Call for Tutorial Proposals
We solicit tutorial proposals of interest to ER2002 attendees. Proposals should clearly identify the intended audience and the requested level of expertise for attending the tutorial, as well as provide the scope of what will be covered. The proposal should also indicate whether it is planned to be presented as a 90 min tutorial (inside the conference), or a half day (3 hours) or a full day (6 hours) pre-conference tutorial. Proposals should be submitted to the tutorial chair, Veda C. Storey (vstorey@gsu.edu) by March 8, 2002.
Call for Panel Proposals
We solicit proposals for panel sessions related to the conference topics about which there is controversy and thus a need for public discussion. Panel proposals should be at most two pages long, specify the questions the panel will discuss, and should include at least a tentative list of panelists. We strongly encourage panels that have a mixture of 2 academic and 2 industry panelists (plus the chair). We expect that a range of viewpoints will be represented in the panel session. The role of the panel chair is to state the initial relevant questions and moderate the panel session. The other panelists are requested to give a short talk and to discuss/debate among the panelists and to interact with the audience. Proposals should be submitted to the panel chair, Heinrich C. Mayr by March 8, 2002 (mayr@ifit.uni-klu.ac.at).
Call for Industrial Presentation Proposals
We solicit submissions for industrial presentation contributions. Reports on significant measurements of results and problems encountered, or new innovative methods or systems are especially valuable for the research community. The presentation can be a demonstration and an extended abstract (at most 2,000 words), or only an extended abstract, whose content describes an industry-oriented topic (e.g. some advanced application, or experiences of application of new software). The presentation proposal will be evaluated by the industry chair and accepted papers will be published in the workshop volume. Demonstration proposals should describe the software to be demonstrated and specify the kind of hardware required. In the case of a demostration, prior contact with the webmaster is recommended. Special equipments are not provided. Proposals should be submitted to the industrial chair, Olavi Maanavilja (olavi.maanavilja@m-real.com), by 17 June, 2002.
Call for Demonstrations and Posters
During the Conceptual Modeling ER2002 conference, a special room will be reserved for posters and demostrations. Industrial or academic research projects of any scale are invited to illustrate innovative concepts, theories or prototype systems on a poster and as a demontration. Proposals should include the title, names of presenters, and one-or-two-page outline describing the project, and what would be presented. The outline will be reviewed and included into the workshops proceedings. Posters and demostrations will be presented informally to visitors. It is not a talk in regular sessions. Proposals should be submitted to the demonstration and poster chair Jyrki Nummenmaa, (jyrki@cs.uta.fi), by 17 June, 2002.

CONFERENCE PLACE
Finland is situated in northern Europe between the 60th and 70th parallels of latitude. It is one of the Nordic Countries. It is the seventh largest country in Europe, with 5.2 million inhabitants. Most of the population is living in the southern part of the country. Finland has a national strategy to make the country into an information society. Some recent advances show that this effort has developed well. You will find more information from the pages of Virtual Finland:
Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland (about 192 000 inhabitants) and the most important centre outside the capital area. It is located in Southern Finland on a beautiful place between two big lakes, about 180 km north from Helsinki.
