Special Issue on: Addressing Societal Challenges through Analytics

We are living in a world in which technology and data are rapidly transforming organizations, industries and societies. Information systems and data analytics are providing unprecedented opportunities to not only transform business processes and increase productivity but also tackle various social and economic problems. In this special issue we particularly encourage submissions that address challenging social and economic problems through analytics and other IT-based solutions. A few examples include:

1. Technology-driven solutions to design smart markets in energy 2. Using big data to design better urban transportation systems 3. Social media analytics for health and nonprofits 4. Technology driven agility and responsiveness for organizations 5. Technology platforms for smart cities and collaborative consumption 6. Open-data initiatives as mechanisms to address important problems in policy 7. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for social and civic engagement 8. Mobile apps for disaster management and logistics

The above examples are only a small subset of research problems that are related to the theme of the special issue. We seek submissions of the highest quality whose focus is on analytics and technology and the problem considered relates directly to a societal challenge. This was the theme of WITS 2016 and we invite authors of papers accepted at WITS 2016 to submit to this special issue. However, submission to the special issue is open to all, not just WITS 2016 authors.
