This month's paper addresses an important practical question - how to reduce errors in spreadsheets. Such errors are known to be rampant. The solution suggested here is collaborative rather than individual work. This proposition was tested by means of an experiment.
The paper is entitled "An Experiment In Collaborative Spreadsheet Development" and the authors are Raymond R. Panko, University Of Hawaii and Richard P. Halverson, Jr. of Guide.Net, Inc.
Their findings suggest that group construction of spreadsheets leads to significant reductions in error rates. Acceptance of group work was also strong as participants indicated a belief that group work leads to better results.
Rather surprising is the finding that group work does not lead to greater satisfaction with the results than working alone. Food for thought is provided especially by the indication that satisfaction with the process is associated with poorer performance. This contradicts the conventional use of satisfaction as one of the indicators of system success. Perhaps it is time to reexamine the relationship between success and satisfaction, or at least to tease out the contingencies affecting the relationship.
