CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue SUBMISSION DUE DATE: March 1, 2011
SPECIAL ISSUE ON: Human-Technology Interaction in Civil Aviation
Guest Editors: Paola Amaldi, Middlesex University, UK José Abdelnour Nocera, Thames Valley University, UK Simone Rozzi, Middlesex University, UK
INTRODUCTION:
The impact of the Information Technology (IT) innovation process on human performance in Civil Aviation has attracted over the years an amazing wealth of research addressing issues relevant to several areas of research like Human Factors, Cognitive engineering, Cognitive ergonomics, Computer Supported Cooperative Work. This wealth of research has addressed not only issues of "cognition in the wild" but also issues of interaction design and human-system interaction, strengthening, for example the view that "users" must be in the design loop since its early phases.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
This call intends to be an opportunity to explore not only the role of "front end users" in shaping the design and ultimately the interaction with technology but also the role of those who are not immediately involved in the "human computer interaction" loop. Technological upgrade in Civil Aviation does not coincide with the design process only but it is rather shaped, for example, by values and priorities embedded in plans and decisions at various Institutional and Societal layers (like Air Traffic Control Centers, National Civil Aviation, Safety Agencies). How are these higher order elements shaping the artifact-design cycle and ultimately human technology interaction? Further Civil Aviation is not only a complex and highly distributed work system but also managed by different sorts of organizations, from private local companies to international organizations. In this context, human-technology interaction is never a concern of a few individuals, but it has far reaching consequences through organizational layers.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
We invite submission of papers that while taking into account human-technology interactions in the domain of Civil Aviation, seek to link them to higher order organizational/societal conditions and/or relate them to inter-communities interactions. By "human technology interactions" we include broad areas like but not limited to the following:
Adaptive use of the technology reflecting institutional decision making and biases Decision making heuristics and biases in human-technology interaction Impact of newly introduced IT on the work system including collaborative and coordinative requirements Making explicit views and (conflicting) expectations by different communities about use of the technology Organisational pressure hampering the design cycle of interactive systems Typical forms of "human error" in relation to human IT interaction
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for this special theme issue on Human Technology Interaction in Civil Aviation on or before February 1, 2011. All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. INTERESTED AUTHORS SHOULD CONSULT THE JOURNAL'S GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS at _http://www.igi-global.com/Files/AuthorEditor/guidelinessubmission.pdf https://webmail.wmin.ac.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.igi-global.com/Files/AuthorEditor/guidelinessubmission.pdf_ . All submitted papers will be reviewed on a double-blind, peer review basis. Papers must follow APA style for reference citations.
